Source: A report citing a source close to the movie-based game's development from British trade paper MCV.

The official story: An Activision rep told us the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

What we heard: Every semi-cherished, vaguely nostalgic property of the '80s short of the The Bionic Six has received its own cinematic revamp recently, so it wasn't incredibly surprising when Dreamworks, Paramount, and Hasbro jointly announced this year that the Transformers would be returning to the silver screen in 2007. What was surprising is that the project would be live-action, directed by Michael Bay (Pearl Harbor, Armageddon) and executive-produced by Steven Spielberg (who has shown a soft spot for robots with past productions like *batteries not included and Artificial Intelligence).

While there's little doubt that Activision would want the rights to a Spielberg-produced summer blockbuster chock sure to be chock-full of explosions and giant battling robots, there is some question about whether another publisher might be better positioned to secure the rights. After all, Spielberg has an established business history with Electronic Arts, having sold Dreamworks Interactive to the company in 2000, and having recently signed a deal with EA "to create three new original games."

Then again, Dreamworks has had a partnership with Activision for several years that has yielded a number of games based on its animated features like Shark Tale, Shrek 2, and Madagascar. But Paramount has already established ties with Midway to make movies based on its Fear & Respect and Area 51 games, and put out a pair of films based on Eidos' Tomb Raider franchise. Eidos would be a serious dark horse to make the Transformers game, as Paramount publicly blamed the poor reception of Eidos' Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness game for the second film's lethargic box office showing. Finally, Atari might be in the running as well, considering it developed the successful Transformers PS2 title based on Hasbro's Armada toy line and cartoon. Then again, Hasbro probably bought the robo-rights back from the publisher last year for a reason.

That's a whole lot of people with a possible shot at grabbing the Transformers movie license. However, Activision has an ace up its sleeve. One of the publishers' in-house studios, Treyarch, is responsible for some of the highest-grossing movie-tie-in games of all time. Treyarch developed the multiconsole adaptations of the films Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, which sold a combined 8 million units on all platforms--netting more than $290 million--according to NPD. If that kind of money isn't a major draw, we're not sure what is.

Bogus or not bogus?: Dare we say there's more to this rumor than meets the eye? Nah. Not bogus.

I just love Transformers, and I can't wait untill I get to see this movie. If they make a game, I hope it's really good.

Old-school baby! It might be a nice trip down Nostalga Lane. The only problem is trying to find an excuse to go see it. Hmmm..."yeah, my kids are dying to see it even if they have never seen a G1 Transformers episode before. So obviously I had to tag along *cough*cough. You know...to um make sure the movie was um...appropriate???"

So long as its not some nonsensical storyline like in the current generations. a good simple story with plenty of big robots blasting and bashing each other into dust uninterrupted and I'll be happy. Theres nothing I hate more than two characters having a huge battle and stopping half way for a long drawn out conversation about the meaning of life or some bull like that.

I am a G1 fan first and foremost because that's where it started and it's what I grew up with. It had memorable characters/toys and story elements that were reused in some form or another for the shows that followed. Beast Wars comes second with its good stories, good characters and its connection to G1 history. Although I have mixed feelings about Beast Machines regarding some character designs and story developments, I liked it mainly because it dealt with mental and spiritual transformation---what it means to change---for the better or for the worst. With that said I hope the live-action movie "lives" up to its potential and doesn't suck wind. As for the game, whoever develops it, it should take full advantage of the next-gen hardware with the modelling and transformations, some level of freeform gameplay/exploration/branching storyline with multiple characters to choose from/unlock. And lastly, you should be able to play as Autobot or Decepticon.

...just gonna add that beast wars was pretty sick. But, of course, leave it to Fox to take all their good material off the air. Spiderman, Beast Wars...thank god Fox doesn't exist anymore on saturday mornings.

..... okay.... you gotta be kidding me. What would posess you to make a giant robot movie? I mean, I'm sorry, despite the original being sweet, there is NO way they will make money off of a movie. First of all, people who have seen all the spinoffs will stay far away from this movie, Also, there isnt exactly a great following of giant robot movie goers. Finally... well, that's enough. I guess theyre going for the King Kong audience...well, maybe if Peter Jackson was directing it. then I would totally go. He's the CGI master. Stephen is a close second. Hollywood.

I have been a G1 Transformer fan since as long as I can remember. In fact, I collected all the box set DVDs and still have a few of my old G1 Transformer action figures around. Anyone remember the G1 Galvatron? I look forward to seeing this movie. I hope this will be a good flick. I heard that Takara in Japan had trouble with their video game based off of the G1 Transformers Movie (the original movie). Anyway, to all those fans of the G1 Transformers..."Till Are One!!".

I love G1 transformers and would def see a movie based on RID. But it would have to be good and not a steaming pile of garbage made to cash in on a known francise.

A Beast Wars movie? Hmm, it's gonna be another 10 or 20 years before they do that. BW only came out 10 years ago, the kids that are going to grow up & remember how cool it was, aren't grown up enough yet. G1 came out over 20 years ago, with me being 29, I'm old enough to appreciate the past. BTW, the main guys that are working on this movie, are Don Murphy & Tom Desanto. You can check Don Murphy's site, he has a forum dedicated to this, & the movie, is being made mostly for fans, but they still have to make it accessible for everybody. Arcee, is no longer a part of the 5 Autobots thankfully, I wouldn't mind her in the background when they leave Cybertron, but, she doesn't belong in the first couple of movies. BTW, there will be other TF's in the movie, they will just concentrate on 5 on each side though. It sounds like Soundwave, along with his casseticons(even though he's now a helicoptor :( will be counted as one Decepticon, so that they'll all get exposure. Oh, & Tom Desanto is really rooting for Frank(Megs & Soundwave) & Peter(Prime & Ironhide), at the very least, to reprise their roles. It'd be nice if Dan could reprise his role as Bumblebee, but I'm not counting on it!

I hope the game (and especially the movie) will be more than meets the eye. The original Transformers movie was most excellent! But I don't think Orson Welles will be doing any of the voice work

There was nothing wrong with the last Transformers movie. They've totally ruined that universe compared to how great it was.

See all the comments above for a refresher on the kind of people the industry rightfully ignores. Their opinions are immature, ill-stated, and mostly insecure deflections of small genitalia and an attempt to sound "cool". Nothing meaningful by any means. Most people grow out of this by 14.

Actually I'm not holdinh opes for this movie. Speilberg will screw around with everything TF fans loved about the series. Look at his previous robot movies, Batteries Not Included and AI, good movies but typical gooey nonsense Speilberg thrives on. And do we forget the horrofic piece of trash he made of War of the Worlds. I'll see it because its Transformers but I'm not expecting much.

G1 Transformers was kick ass. I have all 7 Seasons (Note: US only saw 3 Seasons with a 3 episode ending dubbed Season 4. Japan went on for awhile longer.)

Sorry, that's fake footage, Don Murphy already explained that. And as for the Dinobots, they'll be in the next movie, along with Devastator.......& why would the movie suck, if the Dinobots were in it, they rule! Uh, & PS3 blows away the Xbox 360, before it's even been released, that much we do know, just like it was with the PS2 & Xbox, no contest, but who cares, this isn't about systems, this is about TF's.
