ACIV: Black Flag to be 'more open and free than ever before'

Ubisoft lead scriptwriter teases that gamers will have numerous options in upcoming pirate-themed action game.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will set new series standards for player freedom, according to Ubisoft lead scriptwriter Darby McDevitt. Speaking with Polygon, the writer teased that gameplay in the pirate-themed title has been designed to be "more open and free than ever before."

This tallies with Ubisoft's previously expressed ambition to make Black Flag a bigger, wider world that has learned lessons from past installments in the series.

McDevitt also revealed new details about Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway. He explained that Kenway is a married man (who also spends times with "not-so-special women") with a goal of proving himself to be a "man of quality."

"Edward Kenway is a raucous and bawdy chap," McDevitt said. "But he's also a married man, and one of his primary motivation in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is to get rich and prove himself a ‘man of quality' to his family and betters. So there is a special woman in Edward's life, but there are also other not-so-special women as well."

Black Flag launches October 29 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. The game is also in development for next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 4. A release for Microsoft's next Xbox has not been confirmed yet.

This franchise is so tired and milked to death. I quit at Revelations. I'd rather they have a female lead as well.

Hey,

Ok let's see. i'll be as brief as I can. Just share some ideas, and let me know what u think . Regarding characters, I did find much more interesting Haytham as a character than Connor, didn't you? The father had that ironic english humour that made him different, cooler guy than his cold son, always aspiring to be that kind of good boy, hero character we all know... so much we get finally bored, cause he doesn't surprise us at all, we know from the beginning how are gonna be his movements, I think you get me right?

We talk about reinventing AC world. Ok let's start with the basics. Ubisoft, why not creating a character a bit different? With humour, sometimes making us don't know what crazy idea has he thought of, even if we are controlling him, generating twists in the story we are not expecting at all, someone who prefers to break the law sometimes just to bother someone he doesn't like, instead of choosing the nice heroic way, just like a rogue pirate man should be. Someone with charisma that make us love him, an intelligent script that make us say "hey how cool is this guy, I'm always laughing with what he says and the way he acts, in fact I don't even know what he's going to do nxt chapter, he's just a crazy funny guy"But hey don't miss seriousness whenever it is required. We don't want a jester all the time, remember he's a captain, must maintain his authority and fear. It's easier than you think, I write scripts. That would make a game no repetitive at all.

AC3 added a few things which were cool (don't forget the weather, some new places, trees, new ways of killing, bow,...nice stuff. let's just hope they improve ships atacks, it would be very boring the same things to do along the whole game) but lacked of... you know all these things you are talking about, I won't repeat.

And come one, those are the next gen graphics? Really? Have u seen Blackbeard face at the gameplay trailer? That's a next gen face? Hey, you got to improve the engine, just to add something more that attracts from the game, like spectacular visual stuff (Think of Battlefield, that's one of the good points it has against CoD)

And finally, it would be great if they add originality to missions. We all know this guy is going to send us to this other guy to kill someone to get a thing to meet other guy... surprise us. Is the best thing you can do. Twists, story changes depending on decisions, why not unexpectedly bring us to the past, another age during the game, suddenly, ...We've got surprised by farcry3, watch dogs,... why not in your best-selling, best funded franchise...?

There are many points we could discuss and things to disregard. Maybe sometimes you'd have to ask fans for bringing ideas, we are the ones that are going to buy your game. I've been thinking of great trailers, scenes, places, ages, many, many times, just haven't find the way to tell you, you should let people share ideas. And I think this post is the longest u've read so i'll just stop here and leave ideas for another day. Thanks for wasting time you could've used in practical things haha, discuss!

I'm just going to wait and see. This whole pirate thing sounds like "Yeah, nobody liked AC3 but everyone praised our minigame (naval combat) so how about we make an entire game out of it?". I honestly didn't care much for the sea parts of the game, but still enjoyed them more than most of the core game, so this doesn't smell good to me...

I don't mind assassins creed 3, only thing i found tedius to the point of giving up is the snow parts, a baby can crawl faster then 'connor' running in the snow, heck i can get from 1 island to the next in 'just cause 2' faster then connor/his dad running through the snow parts, i couldn't stomache it and gave up, i mean if theres going to be thaaat much snow at least give us some trees so we can run on or rooftops, don't make us crawl like a snail in the snow

but on the plus side, what i really love is the thunderstorm at the start of the game made my jaws dropped, it was a cloudy day when i was playing, and had to keep looking out my balcony to see if it was actually raining or not..... yes its thaaat good !!

Assassins creed 1 seemed ok to me, i know alotta people didn't like it coz they said it was repetitive i never finished it coz i lost my copy so i don't know what everyone is talking about (i do have another copy that came with revelations but haven't started on it yet)

Assassins creed 2 seems to be the be everyone's favorite including mine, the puzzles were interesting, makes you feel like your on a treasure hunt with all the puzzles, clues, directions, it was EPIC !!

brotherhood/revelations seems to be a rushed job, instead of having puzzles like part 2, they made all the puzzles a sidequest, heck i fnished both games without running into a single puzzle, and the lame excuse for a tower defense game, my god i love tower defense, my phone and tablet and pc emulator tablet is LOADED with tower defense games and i love them all, but this is an abomination of a tower defense game

And as for Assassins 3, can't comment on much other then the tedius snow and AWESOME thunderstorm effects and the waves during the thunderstorm, whoevers in charge of that EPIC thunderstorm and the waves in the sea, needs and their salary doubled !! and also hired again to do the next game especially if its in a PIRATE ship

Liked AC, really liked AC2. Enjoyed AC Brotherhood, was totally let down by AC Revelations and might get around to AC3 at some point. That leaves AC4 pretty far down the list.

AC1 was okay. It was new, interesting but lacked a great execution and game-play elements.

I tried to get into ACII but I did not like Ezio as a character.. or the game itself very much.

I tried ACIII and I gave it a fair shot. I was very impressed initially but the gameplay just couldn't keep me coming back..

Black Flag? Idk man.. Maybe?

After the buggy mess of Assassin's Creed III, I will not be picking up another AC again, that and the fact ACIII was meant to be the END of these? Not the beginning of the end?

I will pass, bring on something new? Watch Dogs will do for now! lol

If it steps things up from AC3 then I'll definitely get this one, while I did enjoy AC3, it was very disappointing compared to the Ezio saga so hopefully they take this game in the right direction, the naval battles of AC3 were AMAZING.

AC1 was the best ...  i want a middle eastern or an Asian assassin creed :(

Ezio series was the best..ACIII was boring, buggy, Connor's missions were LAME..AND..I'm "guessing" that AC4 is going to be related to Connor..they're taking the series backwards, instead of forward...I feel that they should have ventured off in a civil war themed Assassins, or a WWI or WWII themed one? (even though, yes, we've been saturated with world war theme games galore)..the whole pirate theme..kinda lame..

A lot of us may not see it and it's not mentioned in this article, but Skyrim has changed the way a lot of games are developed. We see developers coming out all the time saying "so and so is going to be bigger and more free than ever", open world is becoming the new trend, which is good.

Annonith
Annonith

I don't know what to think about this. Yes, having a huge, open world is usually fun, but I can't help but feel like it doesn't really fit into AC. For me AC was always about 2 things:
- assassinations
- climbing on top of historical buildings and jumping off them.
I'm just afraid that "open" and "free" will translate to "nothing to do in it".

Besides, it's a frikking pirate-themed game. How are they gonna fit assassinations (pirates weren't really a kind that you would call "subtle"), or historical cities into the mix?

Mawy_Golomb
Mawy_Golomb

Hopefully, Mount & Blade 2 will take whatever combat and open world experience that AC has and does an even better job with it (set in the Medieval times, of course). AC1, as others have pointed out, was originally meant to take on a stealth approach, but that has been virtually scrapped in every other title (or made secondary to even the combat itself), which is really sad.

I'd much rather have a more linear version of a stealth game like AC1, minus the tedious side missions that it had to offer. Oh, and certainly a greater emphasis on light and shadow gameplay, which seems rare these days (except in Splinter Cell, of course).

I think I'll just play Watch Dogs instead, pretty burnt out on this series. Well, it was fun while it lasted. Thanks Ubi.

since its big huge world then the other ac ubi should make it easy to travel in it be cause we dont want to spend have of the time traveling .

I'm one of the few that enjoyed ACIII but oh god Ubi please ditch the Snow weather from ACIII....snow textures were terrible to look at and it was an absolute pain in the arse to traverse in the environment.

Navardo95

Big,huge free roaming world =/= A quality game

I can tell you this much that a quality of a game doesn't depend on whether its linear or open world.

@Korvus85 Seeing as how it was in development long before AC3 was even out id be surprised if thats the case.

erMonezza
erMonezza

@Korvus85 I agree.

And from what they described about the hero's personality ans way of life he might not be so likeable.
A family man (that makes me think her's married) loving one woman, but screwing around with others.

I'm not a purist, but this might be a deterrent for many gamers.

I enjoyed the whole AC2 games because Ezio was a likeable character, a ladies man, but when he met the right woman, he stopped.

Oh, well. At the end it's just a game. We'll see.

cheers

@sneakthief81 Let's be honest. I couldn't picture AC going in a WWI or WWII direction.  I picture in my head the new Assassin getting raped by Machine guns and all of the more modern weapon technology and whatnot. If the game ever were to go in this direction(and I highly doubt it would) I would not buy it.

Aletunda

@alpha_unit97 open world was always a trend, I don't think skyrim was the one that opened the door for more developers to create open world games, they have been around for a while

aaron25m

@HipHopBeats Couldnt agree more it not only gave the feeling of being an assassin it had more to do spend money on and generally more excuses to not finish the story, the series feels like its gone backwards since then

darkanimne

I think the best assassin was altair, the feel of  being an assassin still being in AC I. I would like that feeling again in the series :(

korvus
korvus

@stev69 @Korvus85 Didn't know that. In that case they were probably testing the waters (haha...>-<) with AC3 and the inclusion of the minigame, which makes the situation a little less bad...

korvus

@erMonezza @Korvus85 I think it'll be very hard for them to come up with a hero on Ezio's level but at this point I'll be happy if they at least come up with one better than Connor...

@Bumblebee1138 think i'm still abit early in the game for a horse, but since you mention it, i'll try try get the horsy asap then, would be ashame to ruin a game by making you crawl in the snow all the time, thanx for the heads up, i think you rekindaled my love for assassins creed hahaha

Itmeow

@Bumblebee1138 Along those same lines, they only really make you run through the snow when chasing Conor's mother as his dad. You can totally just climb trees when you're Conor to avoid that.

iZeromus

@mxerdude @sneakthief81 I have to agree, WWI and WWII is not a time for assassins, they would indeed have to go back, I really wanted one to be in the Victorian times or maybe one in the medieval feudal time in Japan with ninjas and samurais, it would have fitted quite nicely.

Bumblebee1138
Bumblebee1138

@darkanimne Altair is the TRUE assassin. Ezio has a great personality and an adventurer. Connor is A warrior fighting for his land and freedome.

And new guy is a pirate having sex with other women when he is married........

TohouAsura
TohouAsura

@ahmad996 @darkanimne No he wasn't. Not at all. He was an extravagant killer.

An assassin is all about the art of deception, stealth, and manuevring. Altair was how an assassin should be - get in, do the job, get out.

Ezio just made a show out of everything and tended to not stay true to the creed.
