A Huge Proportion of PS4 Owners Never Played The Last of Us, Sony Says

“It would be almost unfair for all our new fans to never play a game like this.”

by

If you've already played The Last of Us on the PlayStation 3, you might be less inclined to buy The Last of Us Remastered on the PlayStation 4 for $50, but according to Sony there are many PlayStation 4 owners who haven’t played Naughty Dog’s award winning game before.

“The Last of Us is considered one of the most significant titles of the last console generation, winning countless awards,” Sony Computer Entertainment Europe product manager Josh Walker told MCV in an interview. “It would be almost unfair for all our new fans to never play a game like this.”

Walker didn't share exact numbers, but said that Sony can see how many PS4 owners have played The Last of Us by looking at its PlayStation Network data.

“This is quite indicative of the shift in the market and the many players who have migrated from competitive platforms that we’re glad to welcome to PlayStation,” he said.

The Last of Us Remastered runs at 1080p and Naughty Dog has suggested it will run at 60fps. It features higher resolution character models, as well as improved shadows and lighting. The bundle includes DLC, director's commentary, and special interviews with voice actors Troy Baker (Joel) and Ashley Johnson (Ellie).

The Last of Us Remastered releases on July 29 for $50.

This is funny. Since when do people love cash grabs?  If money is there I don't see a problem.  From consumer perspective lulz

tbh the problem isn't the cost $50 is nothing.  The issue is that instead of encouraging developers to idk make games, we get crap like this.  Innovation is at an all time low when the best games on a next gen console are either ports or sequel titles.

This game is very deserving of a HD remake.  I'd LOVE to see Journey get the same treatment :3

I had 360 last gen and switched to PS4. Preordering/buying this in full tomorrow, super stoked! It's great it comes with all of the dlc and to me it feels like a brand new game just with massive accolades, all dlc and at $49.99. Bring it on, Naughty Dog! Woot!

I didn't have a ps3. Just switched over for the next gen and I am so excited to play this game. I almost bought a ps3 just to play it but herd it would be on ps4 so ive been waiting. A friend told me it was the best game ever.

This one is in my top 5 best games ever. I'll gladly sponsor it another time buying it again on PS4.

...imagined a villain shaking clenched fist and shouting: "You haven't played the last of us!" at triumphant hero (who happens to own a ps4)

I have… but you know what? It's worth another play through on PS4. Just not at $60. I'll wait for the price to drop.

I played it and loved it, but my girlfriend never played it. I am going to purchase the game anyway so I can replay it, and so she can play (even if I force her to do it).

I borrowed a friend's copy and beat it over a few hours. Do I count as one of the people that supposedly never played the game? And for the record, it was nothing to write home about, and I wouldn't consider purchassing it since it has ZERO replayability.

That still doesn't mean they are interested in the game though... These people didn't buy a PS4 to play TLOU, just like they didn't buy a PS3 to do the same. It's simple logic.

not that big of a difference. alittle on the details. but not big.

Can't wait for this one... Thanks for giving us old 360 gamers a chance to play this on PS4!  Also, someone tell Sony to make a new Wip3Out... a PS4-quality Wip3Out, too... I gotta get my hover on.

It's number one on U.K Amazon so either that many people have not played it or that many people have and want to re buy it. Perhaps a mixture of both. Either way i expect it will do well enough.

"Walker didn't share exact numbers, but said that Sony can see how many PS4 owners have played The Last of Us by looking at its PlayStation Network data."

Makes you wonder how many people are on that list because they didn't have a PSN account before the PS4.

I'm sure lots of people didn't play it on PS3 because they knew you'd bring it out to the PS4 a year later. I'm one of them.

“It would be almost unfair for all our new fans to never play a game like this.”

So cater to the lazy f**** who didn't bother to play it on the PS3 and completely screw the gamers who took the time and money to pick it up day one and paid for all the DLC. Not even a coupon, code or voucher to carry over any DLC or give any discount.

Thanks Naughty Dog.

Dont'cha just love it when a company tells you whats going on... I just trust them so much.... both Microsoft, and Sony need to stop telling me anything... everyone I know has played that game.

The people posting neg comments about this game obviously never played this game to its entirety and are just microsoft fanboys..  The game is very good.  Once you play it you will know.  The multiplayer brought me back to days where I was hooked on games and wanted to play it everyday.  That happens rarely these days.

They make it sound like the original TLOU was released ages ago, give people a break, they'll buy it when/if they feel like it, on PS3 or PS4.

This is why Last of Us actually wasn't good and people are stupid for buying a remaster:

I actually did not enjoy this game. I like Uncharted but not this.

Many of us actually did try the game and many of us stop playing it. Despite what the fans want you to believe It wasn't for everybody.

So would I be able to continue on my PS4 where I stopped playing on my PS3? Can I even go back and forth between the two? That would make me purchase the game (I have one of each but on separate floors in our house, and it's pretty random which one is available and which one is occupied by the kids).

How many Out of 80 millions + PS3 owners did play this game? Of course there're many.

As much as I loved TLOU on PS3 the only thing I want right now is for Naughty Dog to get the rights back for Crash Bandicoot.

That series is screaming for a reboot. If it's left to activision they will most certainly F sh1t up.

stangoodvibes

@jimmy_russell  just about to start playing it for the third or fourth time. I don't know if you noticed but the days where you 'beat' a game in the shortest time possible are over. Apart from Wolfenstein: the New Older which is actually Wolfenstein the same sh1t old order with really lame things like Boss fights. Like it's the early noughties.

Sometimes in a game, just like in life, you should stop and smell the roses a few times, or at least slow down and enjoy the fantastic atmosphere and story. So good in fact that they are going to make a movie of it. Something no-one will be doing with Wolfensuck: The New Totally Lame Order Complete With Sh1tty Boss Fights.

As much as I would love a discount, I'm trying to think of a case, in any medium, where a remaster / VHS-DVD-bluray / game / album / anything has ever been offered to prior owners at a discount. I'm sure enough googling would reveal that one time it did happen, but for the most part, unfortunately, this is how things work.

@nychd Funny, I really, really, really did not Uncharted but I loved this game. For me, this game is tied with Red Dead Redemption as my all time favorite.

Different strokes for different folks.

@IJONOI I read an article on this. Naughty Dog today is not the naughty dog from 20 years ago. I believe it stated there were literally no employees left from the original crash game at Naughty Dog (or at least no "relevant" employees).

That Naughty Dog is dead. Any attempt at a new crash bandicoot would be from all new employees and they would have no better chance making a good bandicoot game than any other quality company.

COD ghosts, your character and stats all carry over from system to system. Even from last gen to current gen. No need to start all over.

Most companies, like Verizon and Netflix give current members discounts, offers and extensions that new account holders don't get.

Games like Mass Effect 2 and 3 reward return payers with character carry over and story integration that new players do not.

Buying most games, especially under a preorder grants players extra DLC that late comers would otherwise not. They also give codes out to betas for other games...again, not for the players who didn't.

Many companies like Best Buy and Starbucks reward returning customers with discounts and rewards newcomers don't get.

This was all on the top of my head without a google search. How ever you want to spin it, giving us the "that's how it is" rhetoric, it's wrong that companies keep remastering their works and expect people to pay for it all again.

There should be a way to give those that spent all that time and money a break and let's face it...an incentive to pay again.

Bloodklot73
Bloodklot73

@Daelusca @Bloodklot73 Ok fair enough.  You didn't like it.  But numbers don't lie.  It was GOTY for a reason... People still play it, multiplayer servers are still filled.  People who had it on PS3 will buy it again for PS4.  Including myself. :)  Btw, just playing it on your friends PS3 is not the same thing because you never allowed yourself to fully explore the game.  If you're offended by me saying MS fanboy, then I was correct in the accusation.

NbAlIvEr10000

@Daelusca @Bloodklot73 You're totally right that people have their own opinions of games and their own personal preference, but if you didn't at least enjoy the game in some way then I question that persons logic and personality.  TLoU was a major piece of art in terms of graphics, acting, storytelling and strategic gameplay (playing on hardest diff).  Its one of those games we won't see in a long time.....Bioshock Infinite maybe being the closest after it.

Daelusca

@Sw33tEscape Wow, different strokes indeed. Likewise my fav game all time is RDR (tied with ME2), but TLoU doesn't crack my top 50.

It's just given Naughty Dogs recent success I'd trust them to do a better job than most other companies out there.

I think Activision released a mobile kart game in like 2010. what the h3ll is wrong with some of these people! Drives me mad.

But yea, i absolutely see where you're coming from.

Naquada

@Gravity_Slave I know stating this will be like pissing upwind, but everything you just stated doesn't apply to the situation you're moaning about. I could say I get a discount on a new Ford for owning a previous one (which I do), but that also isn't applicable. You're trying to shoehorn in different situations to fit this one... and they don't.

COD ghosts - Released with multi-platform in mind, as the same edition on each. Not applicable.

Verizon / Netflix - You're paying them a recurring fee. Not applicable.

ME2 / 3 - Save games in a same generation series applies how? Oh yeah, it doesn't.

Pre-order bonuses - There is so much wrong with this comparison it isn't even funny, not the least of which is that many pre-order bonuses are limited, so those that pre-order might not even get it, setting them apart from others that pre-order AND those that don't. Not applicable.

Best Buy / Starbucks - I can go into both chains and get the same rewards as a long time customer. Also, comparing the sales of one products to companies that sell hundreds (or hundreds of variations of a product) is equally silly. Also, not applicable.

Maybe a Google search is the way to go for the next round. You might even find apples to compare to apples, rather than a bunch of oranges.

@NbAlIvEr10000 @Daelusca @Bloodklot73  Umm, so in other words, you are doing what the person you replied to said people like you do. You either like it, or are just a fanboy, or apparently stupid.

BLUR! I loved BLUR! It was so damn fun. I seriously do not understand why people did not love that game.
