A First-Person GTA 5 Looks Like This

See the world of Los Santos from a new perspective.

Rockstar Games' acclaimed open-world game Grand Theft Auto V is a third-person game, but what would it look like if you controlled Michael, Trevor, and Franklin from a first-person perspective? Now we know, thanks to YouTube user XBLToothPik (via Eurogamer), who has published a pair of videos (above and below) showing the familiar world of Los Santos from an entirely new perspective.

Using a modded Xbox 360, XBLToothPik made use of a script to change the perspective. It's a bit rough. But if you've ever wondered what walking the streets of Los Santos or piloting a plane above the mountains of Blaine County looks like from a first-person perspective, here's your chance. You can also imagine the possibility for virtual reality.

With GTA V coming to PC later this year, you can expect the modding community to have a field day with unique and imaginative mods--just like it did for Grand Theft Auto IV. There's no word yet on when specifically this fall the PC version--or Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions for that matter--will be released.

I personally prefer the best controllers for each genre, for car games, I like steering wheels, for fps I prefer the mouse. For games like Dead Rising 3 and AC, Gamepad works great.

I find it weird how people seem to separate PC's w/ controllers. I have a controller and a PC. If a game plays better with a controller then a keyboard/mouse, I use the controller.

1st person GTA don't think so. Just glad ps4 is getting it, mouse and keyboard would take a lot to get used to

I dunno... I play both 1st person (doom&wolfenstein) and 3rd person (GTA 3) on PC and over the years I come to respect both equally.  as long as I can still play the 3rds with my mouse and keyboard. (in Sleeping dogs I could not :(  )

I also see lots of folks teaming 1st person with "immersion" in the comments and I can't agree.  games like Batman, GTA or Watch dogs wouldn't be half as good in 1st.  Part of the immersion in 3rds is "seeing" how slick your character is in-action.  adds more cinematic-quality to the experience (IMO of course).  Try MaxPayne3 on PC if you haven't yet.

and I think GTA would suck as a 1st person game.  wouldn't be as entertaining when you got hit by a random car or blown into the air by a mistimed grenade!

I also think lots of 1st person-only fans have trouble focusing away from their character in 3rds.  I did... just takes time to get used to :)

sadly the FOV is horrible, which makes the feature worthless.

When he took out the grenade launcher it immediately reminded me of Golden Eye lol.

its simple, 3rd person for casual console players and first person for PC players playing games for immersion.

If they made GTA in only first person then I would never play another GTA game.

In the car, the camera is too low. Or the character is very short and can barely see over the steering wheel.

they should always have 3rd person and 1st person, in every game. Seriously, i would so rather play GTA or most 3rd person games in 1st person, its so much more immersive for me including mass effect. The option should always be there.

Reminds me of when 1st Person Racers and 3rd Person Racers were separate genres before they made the VIEW CHANGE button...

UGH, just "no." Last year signaled the death of the FPS, and games like Hardline and Farcry are only postponing the inevitable. Sure there will always be 12 year olds lining up for Call of Duty, and there will always be game publishers that refuse to make their good games great (Ahem, Bethesda) by going all 3rd person... but anyone that wants more than a pew-pew shooter has already sold their copies of Black Ops II and has only had GTA spinning since October. The FPS is SO last-gen... Give me something with depth baby! How you gonna keep us down on the farm after we've played The Last of Us or GTA V? You can't, game makers will just simply have to step it up or face financial ruin!! lol. rant over.

Big slap in face of PC gamers who claims arrogantly that they are the only one who can mode the game. Console gamers are more innovative than PC mustard race.

I first person/third person option like with TES/falllout series would be fun. I tend to gravitate towards first person as it helps immerse me in the gaming world.

namitokiwa

I am still glad that GTA series still the same third persion. I really don't like FPS, I always feel sick when I play FPS around 10 minutes. My mind isnt strong enough.

I finished this game like 5 times and did the "make 2. 2 billion dollars thing and buy every property". It doesn't make sense for the story mode, which is, ah, a story. But it might be a cool change up for the online mode.

Gankstar_VX84
Gankstar_VX84

if i could of played it like that i might have finished it. Rockstar should take note of this and give us what Kojima did with MGS 4,give us both...

I almost always prefer third person shooting mechanics (and gameplay) over first person. It just feels better for me to see things from behind the shoulder. That said, I don't care much for any of the GTA games anyway, regardless of angle.

fillup0
fillup0

This is really cool and all but I don't know how people can say the game would be better this way. First person implies that you have absolute control like you're making a decision. Third person makes more sense for the constricted story telling Rockstar does (apart from that awful forced choice at the end) because you're more of an observer who gets to control the interesting bits.

I would have preferred it like this would have been a better game, as far as gunplay is concerned. Would have been a titan in the FPS genre.

That looked great! When a mod like it is out for the PC version I'll give GTA V another run, nice with some change.

yavix

Yep that sucked just as bad as I thought it would. First person perspective is way over used. I don't want every game to look like a FPS, I like variety.

cynicritic

This is how it should be. First Person is the SUPERIOR perspective. Better immersion, better control. Simply better.

@dlaney34 I'm with you. I look for games that have full controller support on Steam. However, if it is a first person shooter, I will default to mouse and keyboard.

@nyran125tk Not every I guess: first person combat for Witcher 2 would be not too playable :)

@nyran125tk yeah i agree, especially when they have such good interiors of vehicles and even steering wheel/instrument animations...

Warlord_Irochi
Warlord_Irochi

@mtoomb Sorry man, but that is just wrong. Wolfenstein, Bioshock Infinite, Destiny, Far Cry 4 and Homefront show EXACTLY the opposite; that for the first time in some years there is room in the market for FPS other than CoD.
Your argumentation here is purely based in you personal suppositions and they are not reflecting reality as it is right now. Sorry.

WolfgarTheQuiet
WolfgarTheQuiet

@mtoomb Dude you are so wrong. There is massive difference between FPS and playing Sandbox or RPG in First Person. I mean if they have first person driving in game why not have first person foot action.

Some people love driving in GTA in first person view, the once on foot their immersion is ruined by 3rd person view.

First person view should be an option included with other camera angles. In the end no one is forcing you to use it and those who like it will use it, simple as that.

Any how, GTA old news, finished it in one week and shelved it, back to re playing GTA III to San Andreas. Maybe see what mods are there after PC release but still not worth paying for it again.

jeremyc99999
jeremyc99999

@3dmatrixgamer Yeah, because 1% of Xbox 360 owners who have a modded Xbox will be able to play this. Really devastating.

SingletreeAve

@fillup0 Good point.  One thing you don't have during any GTA mission is absolute control.  God forbid you should stray 10 ten feet from the intended path.

GTAV and games like Uncharted are not FPS games like COD and Wolfenstein. You're confusing genres.

aa29648612
aa29648612

Totally agree most games seem to only do first person. but for me I like third such as GTA, mass effect and any other rpg and also any survival horror game. I just never been into games where you see your hands and a weapon and to top it off first person games where you create a character but what's the point its not like you can even see your character.

aa29648612

Except it looks stupid just seeing a gun and the characters arms.

Poodger

@cynicritic Ehh, I have grown jaded to the FPS perspective. In the last 2 or 3 years, I have come to deeply admire Third Person Shoulder, where the camera is locked behind the character. It just feel right to me.

Xan26

@tr4newreck @nyran125tk If the game had been designed with two perspectives in mind, the interiors and animations would not have been so rough, clearly.

Although I agree with jeremyc99999, the comment was no more immature than PC gamers slating console gamers for their choice of platform. I myself game on both but mostly on console as that's what most of my friends game on. It's good to know that people are expanding their modding skills to more than PC.

@Forcecaster @aa29648612 Well i enjoy movies and i like playing the games i buy like i was watching a movie. but when you can create your character or change your clothes why even bother when you can't even see it.
