80s Action meets Far Cry 3 in Blood Dragon - Gameplay Gallery

Far Cry 3 goes on an 80s nostalgia trip courtesy of Ubisoft's forthcoming Blood Dragon stand-alone. Get your fill of cyber-soldiers and giant reptiles in our gameplay gallery.

Many may have thought that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was Ubisoft's idea of an April Fool's Day prank, but the 80s-inspired spin-off is real, giant reptiles and all. Ditching any vestige of gravitas from the original, this stand-alone sends up sci-fi action films of old, where cliches abound.

Take a look at our collection of gameplay footage below and witness Sergeant Rex Power Colt take on the hilarious tutorial before embarking on some intense combat amidst terrifying dinosaurs and cyber-soldiers.

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon will be available via XBLA, PSN and PC on May 1, with PSN in North America getting it on April 30. Will you be downloading it? Let us know in the comments below.

Ubisoft probably set a new record in actually trolling gamers through this game...

On paper it sounds good but seeing the ugly post apocalyptic jungles and bright rave colored dinosaurs and bright neon guns all over, this game looks like crap. Dinosaurs eat cyborgs? C'mon guys this is lame. This has everyone thirsting for what could of been...a Farcry with real non RAVE colored dinosaurs and real human enemies that bleed RED blood, and maybe throw in a few cyborgs and aliens in the mix....Hopefully Farcry 4 gets it right.

I adore it.  Hope it's a standalone (no disc needed) and us PS+ members get a discount!

Doesn't this hurt the eyes of anyone else?!  Man I find this game so hard to look at, the insane red hue almost makes me nauseated.  Seems like a cool expansion but I can tell just from the look I wouldn't be able to enjoy it :(

kinda disappointed that Ubisoft won't release this game on physical disc. This game looks fantastic, the humor is great, and the music is phenomenal!

How is this game related to Far Cry 3? The neon colors in this game remains me of Tron

Really. First Ubi comes up with FC3 which is a medium game with some shitty arcade sequences. Then comes this mediocre side-game. I just wonder what the f*** UbiSoft is up to?

Kindest regards,

Lionheart

The game is amazing fun and hilarious.... but the main story is only about 3 hours long and side missions probably only take about another 3 hours. I'm just hoping that add some new stuff to the game before it's released.

 I love seeing gameplay before a game is released, and based off that gameplay I am able to see clear as day  that the game is going to be FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No question about it.

@Dredcrumb9 Over the top crazy stuff is the best, video games don't need to make sense. Actually, some of the best games are far out there.

You people complain about the colors. Is it better to have steady grey-only then?
Gears of War, COD, SO:The Line (Spec Ops only in the last levels) all those games have very colorless grey world, that is just boring and im suprised it does not turn one in to acutal stone. Those games are very dead-looking because of no bright colors in use.
This actually something totally different and that is why i give props to it.

@pal_080 My personal guess is that it will be really confusing once you're in the middle of intense firefight. The sandbox style of the combat mixed with all the flashing neons, low brightness and high contrast of the environments will make any kind of "strategic" approach to combat difficult (even with enemy tagging). Add to that a narrow fov (hope they keep the option to change it in the pc version) and I think we'll be running around like madmen all the time shooting at everything...

@youngzen69 The only similarity is the engine, nothing else. They used the name so it will sell.

@ailecks Whaaaaat? FC3 was awesome, best game of 2012 in my book! Maybe the game is really good & you're just a horrible person?

Dredcrumb9

@quakke I'm pretty sure nobody is comparing this to gears or cod, but you are wrong. it's better to have lush green jungles of Farcry 3 or dry Sahara of Farcry 2 with dinosaurs and human enemies, than these dead jungles with annoying rave colors everywhere. And dinosaurs that eat cyborgs? This is so lame, we'd rather see real non rave colored dinos eating poeple.

@renatogsms @lionheart66  No, you are right, I might have overrated it. It's more like crap. Once played you wont play it again. So what kind of game does it make?

I do agree on one thing, the graphs are very good but a game is more than graphics.

Are you High? far cry 2 was a bad game , it has good fire and a massive map but other than that it was terrible, no customization,  terrible story, painfully bad online, boring guns, awful vehicles....need i go on? FC3 beat FC2 in every single way as far as im concerned. and dont say i dont know cos i have played over 40 hours on both far cry 2 and 3!

@Infinite_713 @ailecks Name calling isn't nice, it's just his opinion whether we agree or not. We already know the majority of people think it's awesome.

@Infinite_713 @ailecks And this Blood Dragon looks like the over-the-top 80's action- and it has DRAGONS. Seems awsome. I'm just not sure of the constant red-like sky

quakke

@Dredcrumb9 @quakke

Sure. But you also keep missing the point, that this game breaks almost all of the "todays industry standards".A game that is result of wild imagination (like alot of 90's games), by not being "modern" shooter, not same crushed buildingblocks/isreal fight surroundings, not featuring traditional weapons, not featuring colorless world, not featuring bad COD-like humor. Basically not delivering what we have already seen more than enough, and not taking it's self so darn seriously.

More of free approach. Back in the day you thought, "hey, that might be a good idea.." and start building it from there. Now Activision/Infinity Ward made COD and everybody wants to stay in the same boat. "We can't be different, we cant have any cyborgs shooting lazer and player jumping his way over the lava puzzle. We can make boring COD-like present time modern terrorist situations.". Well, they can't even do that well. CS is multiplayer, and does it 100 times better, then what COD can even ever imagine.

@CivilizedPsycho @quakke

Ok. Well i have been playing Hard Reset for few months and im not dead yet :D Hard Reset is also set in Cyberpunk, so it features heavy neonlighting. But i understand your concern.

@renatogsms@lionheart66

Thx for you reply! I agree with some of what you say. The things I didn't like about it were the arcade sequences. Those ruined the game for me cause they were the same thing every time you played them and you have to go through those to get further in the game and  to get better weapons and stuff. As they were necessary to get further I don't like to call it a sandbox-game Those arcace sequences were scripted into the game. I think that sucks. I have played all of the Far Cry- and Crysis games and even if FC2 had a bad AI that was the best game of them in my opinion. You could choose what way or path you wanted even if you have to visit the two fractions now and then to get new missions.. But nothing was scripted in the same way as FC3. I was utmost disappointed even if I got the game for halfprice when ordering it in advance.

Another thing that is annoying with the game is the poor comments of the enemy and the inhabitants. So stupid I am getting embarrassed on behalr of UbiSoft which must have acknowledge it.

In FC2 you just could laugh at what they said. Maybe I have a different kind of humour.

And all the looting just because Skyrim was a success. Give me a break!

 I have played it through three times just to see if I was wrong the first time and now I won't play it again. It's so boring when you cant change your gameplay-style. Waisted time and waisted money.

I demand more of a game than this.

@lionheart66I know this is long, but I felt I should write my point of view. The  graphics were great, no doubt, but I definitely agree with you that there's a need for a lot more than good graphs to make a good game (I actually love lots of indie games over crysis and alike). I also agree that this is a 'single-playthrough' kind of game. I've tried to give it a second go, but (pretty quickly, I must admit), got the feeling that I had done it all and that there was no reason keeping me going on one more time.

However, the first time I've played it, I really enjoyed 'every' single moment of the campaign (which is unusual), the sandbox gameplay and rpg elements, the aliveness of the islands, most of the characters (specially the villains - there's been a while since I've seen game villains that really were memorable), and the fact that our character actually changed from the fearful annoying little kid to the self-reliant character which I actually cared about, as the story developed.

But I think you were annoyed by the fact that there was no way you could change how the story ended right? The first time I read about it I was like "What the f***?" However, if you think about it (even though games are supposed to be an escape from reality in which one hopes to be able to do what he/she usually cannot do in the real world), the motto of the game got around the idea that its events could occur in real life, and that you could actually be the guy you play with (in a rather far-fetched situation, but, hey it's a game!). If you agree with me on that, you may also agree that in your life there were moments, experiences and situations you got the feeling that no matter what you did, the outcome of it would be the same every single time. I won't discuss philosophy or religion here, but I think everyone (I know, at least) got the feeling sometime(s).

That's why I actually grew to love the fact that there was no real alternative ending in this game. In real life tortoises are slower than hares and theres a really small chance (if theres a chance at all) one would win a race against a hare, no matter how hard it tried. It's not fair, but nobody ever said life was fair.

I don't know if this was what made you think/ feel the game was crappy, and, if it was, I don't expect you to agree with me or to change your opinion about the game but I thought I'd share my point of view with you.
