6.5 Million Games Were Played During Destiny Alpha

Bungie released a bunch of stats about the PS4-exclusive Destiny alpha that ended last week.

Almost 6.5 million games were played during the PS4-exclusive Destiny alpha test that ended last week, developer Bungie revealed.

In a post on its website, Bungie published several stats about the amount that people played the alpha. Between amount of Dregs destroyed, to the number of public events joined, these stats all indicate that a lot of players took the chance to check out Destiny before its release.

Here's what Bungie measured during the test:

  • 149,522,313 Primary Weapon Kills
  • 21,782,610 Secondary Weapon Kills
  • 4,002,737 Heavy Weapon Kills
  • 21,687,298 Super Ability Kills
  • 2,819,211 Orbs of Light Gathered
  • 6,850,773 Control Points Captured in the Crucible
  • 1,195 Deathless Medals awarded in the Crucible
  • 4,356 Splatters with the Sparrow
  • 667,966 Public Events Joined
  • 60,491,944 Fallen Dregs Dispatched with Extreme Prejudice
  • Too many to count: Guardians served in Dance Parties
  • 6,461,871 Player Games Played

In February, publisher Activision stated that Destiny will be the "best-selling new video game IP in history." GameSpot editors also played the alpha, and you can check out our impressions of Destiny here. The game launches on September 9 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3, but you can play it earlier during the beta test which begins for PS3 and PS4 on July 17.

isnt this alot for a beta that lasted week?

I would have invested more time in the Alpha if my character settings and upgrades would have stayed for the final release. I hope the Beta is a different territory than the one offered up in the Alpha too.

wasn't offered alpha access for this but still have the beta to look forward to next month (already got my code). can't wait.

It looks a lot like Halo, but that's hardly a bad thing. I'm definitely looking forward to September.

I don't own a PS4 so I missed the Alpha. How was it?

So they expect this thing to sell more than 40 million units?

Good luck with that. Not even GTA sells those kinds of numbers. I don't think it's even possible for a AAA $60 title to sell as many units as the original Tetris or Super Mario Bros.

I didn't enjoy it. Felt way to much like Halo

Does anyone know if this game will have single players match making? I find it really difficult to get a group together and so I need to be able to play solo even if I am playing co-op with randoms most of the time.

So when we going to see a FPS in the past 15 years that actually uses real reload ammunition count.

Magazine holds 30, shoot 5 bullets, reload....your out 30 bullets regardless.

MMOs need to be harder to promote teamwork. More yawn fest it seems

@fgjnfgh It wasn't even a beta but a Alpha and it didn't last as long as a week but a long weekend. That's a lot of games.

@wookiegr its extremely rare for your progress in an alpha or beta to transfer to the final release of a game.

@themc_7  It was  good. Limited but good. If you like loot and open world and shooting enemies you will like it.  the world(old Russia) was amazingly detailed.

@liquidbutter they have to sell 8.4 million copies at $60 each just to break even. so selling 10 million games will be a success. After playing the alpha, im sure they could sell 10 million copies across 4 platforms. And Activision is seriously talking about putting this on PC also. the 2 types of games that thrive on PC are MMO's and FPS games, and Destiny is both. which is why its very puzzling they didnt include the PC for launch. I think this game will do very well in the long run regardless.

@liquidbutter I think they're expecting about 10-15 milion in sales. 40 is too high. No that Activision wouldn't wnat it, of course.

Minecraft has sold 50 million units across all its various platforms, does Destiny expect to do better than even that?

Very high expectations for a game that's not really generating very much buzz. I haven't seen any gamers or game journalists that are excited enough for Destiny to suggest it will break those kinds of records. At best they might beat Watch Dogs for best-selling new IP at launch. Which just means selling something like 4 million copies in the first week.

@robbiejones  So I'm betting you played it for 20 min max and just gave up on it.  That is, if you even played it at all lol.

cherublvl99
cherublvl99

@robbiejones Is this a problem? Halo has 97 out 100 in critics, what you want? A COD or BF kind a game? Destiny is a Halo less complex, with vehicles and with a huge size map, stop whinning.

@Dannystaples14 i think you can but connection bungie servers is always required, so anyone can join you if mission supports coop

ricku1967
ricku1967

@Dannystaples14 you can play the standard missions and the story campaign solo if you wanted to..only the strike missions, raids and PVP is mandatory grouping

nickpeck36

@grove12345  Because, for the 10 people that want that there will be millions of people complaining that they want it like every other FPS.

@deadline-zero0 @liquidbutter As of February GTAV has sold 32.5 million copies. GTA is a world renowned and loved franchise. Destiny is a brand new IP. I really can't see it selling more than 15-20 million copies.

@liquidbutter Minecraft is entirely a different animal as it is indie it is toooo much iconic making world records. I really havent heard of any indie title that did nearly half of MC.

nickpeck36

@liquidbutter  Still early for the hype to get built up a ton.  You will see the marketing and stories picking up once the beta hits and it's  closer to launch.

The game will do well no doubt.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@marlobc Yeah. Perhaps there is a way of turning it off if you want. Like in Dead Island.

ricku1967
ricku1967

@3dmatrixgamer @ricku1967 its a hybrid MMO, not your traditional MMO..most of the game you can play solo. it only feels like an MMO when you are at the tower..its more like a co-op game than an MMO
..so in that sense, its nothing like wow

The-Neon-Seal
The-Neon-Seal

@themc_7 @deadline-zero0 @liquidbutter It maybe a new IP, but that dosn't mean it hasn't got pedigree.

danielgibbs7902
danielgibbs7902

@nickpeck36 @liquidbutter It would do better if you released the Alpha/beta on both systems...then a BUZZ can be generated to maybe get close to that number.

Now I could understand if it were JUST coming out on the PS4; but its not.

themc_7
themc_7

@The-Neon-Seal I agree. But I'll eat my own gym sock if this out sells GTAV.  I've got about 40 ppl on my XBL friends list. All of which play various games, RPGs, Shooters, Fantasy, Arcade, etc. The week GTAV came out, every friend was playing it. GTA is just a series that everyone buys. Destiny tho, most of my friends say, "meh, another Halo shooter"

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@marlobc Oh yeah co-op is great but sometimes you just can't be bothered with the hassle, or you want to do your own thing for a while.

Like in Borderlands I kind of felt like I was changing the person's game I went into. Probably just me being OCD but you know.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@ricku1967 Excellent. I will definitely be picking this up then. That was my only issue with it. Trying to get a group of friends together these days is impossible.

nickpeck36
nickpeck36

@Dannystaples14 @marlobc  I agree.  I like to wander around and explore.  While playing the alpha I did just that and found a lot of little hidden ghosts / loot stashes, though I'm sure there will be more in the final version.

I like being able to coop and solo at any given moment, can't wait.

spartanx169x
spartanx169x

@Dannystaples14 @marlobc  the game will not be able to run unless you are connected. The players were pretty cool about running into each other. Nobody seemed annoying. But that could change when it completely opens to the public.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@ricku1967 Oh really? That bodes well that people have such a positive response even before it is finished.

nickpeck36
nickpeck36

@Dannystaples14 @ricku1967  I was already going to get it but after playing the alpha I pre ordered it right away.  The game plays so well in it's current state which bodes very well for the final version.

I have so many games on pre order but I won't touch them until I need a break from playing this game constantly lol.  I absolutely cannot wait for the beta and the final version.

ricku1967
ricku1967

@Dannystaples14 @ricku1967 I have played a ton of alphas and this didnt play like an alpha at all. it played very well, tight controls, graphically stunning, great gun mechanics..it was very solid and polished ...looking forward to the beta
