500GB Xbox 360 Hard Drive Revealed, Will Sell for $110

[UPDATE] Hard drive confirmed; launching this month.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a Microsoft representative confirmed that the Xbox 360 500GB hard drive will go on sale this month for $110 and that the 320GB unit should drop in price.

"A new Xbox 360 500GB media hard drive will be available starting this month," the representative said. "The Xbox 360 500GB media hard drive will be available for $109.99. We are working with retailers to revise pricing on the Xbox 360 320GB media hard drive to maintain market competitiveness, as we do on a regular basis."

The original story is below.

A product page on Xbox.com reveals that Microsoft is planning to introduce a 500GB hard drive for the Xbox 360, bringing official storage support on par with the Xbox One.

The hard drive will sell for $110, according to the product listing, which also says preorders will open "soon." Microsoft also sells a 320GB hard drive, though it goes for $130. It's likely that Microsoft will drop the price of the 320GB hard drive when the 500GB model goes on sale.

Currently, the Xbox 360 is available in 4GB and 250GB options. The Xbox One, of course, comes with a 500GB and also has support for external storage (as does the Xbox 360). In November, Microsoft will release a 1TB Xbox One console in a bundle with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

The 320GB Xbox 360 hard drive, and presumably the 500GB unit, will be compatible only with the newer Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E models. We have followed up with Microsoft, asking for more information about the 500GB Xbox 360 hard drive.

How do you swap the 320GB HDD on the Xbox 360 Slim. I thought you couldn't open it without special screwdrivers? My 360 slim is already running out of space now. I only have about 8GB left. I just got my 4TB external HDD for my XB1 in the mail. I'm all set on that platform for the rest of this generation.

PS3 & PS4 need to have at least 1 TB HDD, or many consumers will have hard time purchasing digital contents.

If anyone buys the Xbox 360 E console that only comes with 4GB flash memory then getting the 500GB HDD for $110.00 is worth it. or get the 320GB HDD on sale before stock is depleted.

The Xbox 360 4GB E console is just $159.99 on sale at future shop and best buy at the moment. But does not come with any games. This is better deal than buying the Standard Xbox 360 E for $250.00 because for only $10.00 more you get double the HDD space. The regular 250GB Xbox 360 console does come with a pack in game or 2. Costing $250.00

Since it is surprising how fast HDD space fills up. And I hate deleting stuff constantly to manage data. Just get the largest HDD and be done with it.

I am sure the market for an overpriced peripherial for storage of a last gen console is huge...

I have a 360 with a 105GB hard drive. I'm confused do you take the old drive out or do you just add the bigger one and have two drives?

My xbox had a hacked 500GB hard drive a year ago.

Microsoft never banned any console because of hacked hard drive.

Microsoft, a computer software GIANT, is still ripping off consumers by selling an overpriced console accessory. You can get a decent 1TB HHD for UNDER $100.

I'm not ready to bail completely on consoles, but I might be waiting until late in the console's life cycle before purchasing.

Wish we could get a 500gb 360 console with hd already in it...would be nice competition for the PS3 super slim...

gonna pick one up as soon as it hits South African retailers...

Over priced as usual. I'm waiting for a 1TB HDD for the Xbox One. I know you can use external hard drives, but I'd rather have a decent sized internal HDD right off the bat. And 500GB obviously isn't enough for this gen. Hell, 1TB may not be enough, with th. Free games and having to install all your games now. But at least it's more sensible than 500GB. And I don't really care for COD or the new COD Edition color scheme. I just want a regular, black, plain, 1TB Xbox One.

Well i'll be needing that pretty soon. With these Free Games and all these sales its all eating up room on my HD. Anyway, this is just another clue that current gen is here to stay.

Next Gen is just not going to replace years of investment in so people would upgrade to a system with at best minimal differences .

I think an announcement will be made in about a yeat that Microsoft  and Sony will be supporting current gen indefinitely all throughout the next gen cycle. 360 and PS3 are too big to replace.

but why? This feels like putting a fresh set of tires on your car the week before you send it to the wreckers. Most people have moved on, or are saving up for the next gen. This would've been beneficial a year or two ago, but not now.

bought a 500gb one 3 years ago for my PS3 cost me £40, that bit of plastic they stick it in is pretty expensive

Seriously, $110 for 500 GB?  And its for the 360?  I look to the ridiculous comments of people justifying this.

This is one of the reasons Xbox One really annoyed me this gen. The DRM stuff and always online was big but I was more annoyed by this stuff overall. Proprietary hard drives and using plug and play kits is such BS. We had an entire console generation where this was the case with the 360, I don't want another. Just thinking about how many plug and play kits and hard drives I've spent money on with the 360 makes my skin crawl.

Right now on amazon you can get a 3tb for $106. That is 6 times the size for slightly less.

Lol milking at it's best ! better buy a 2tb external hdd for 85bucks -.-

Sure would have been nice of them to provide this upgrade for the older versions that actually need more space, and owners might actually be convinced to spend that kind of cash on a new HD.

Gamer_4_Fun
Gamer_4_Fun

:O with that cost get a SSD, once you go SSD you never wanna go back! It the most epic upgrade you can make which makes night and day difference. I used to boot windows in 1 minute to fully load it, now it takes me 8 sec!

parrot_of_adun
parrot_of_adun

I'm 99.9% sure this is an SSD, which not only justifies the price, but makes it a decent deal.

@ArchoNils2 It actually is because everyone is starting to run out of memory on their Xbox 360's. I want to transfer all my data from my 250GB HDD to the 500GB HDD. I had to do with with the 120GB from the original XBox several years ago.

@Stepn2myworld I just got a 4TB HDD for my XB1 for $155. lol!! I wish the XBox 360 supported external HDD.

@themc_7 There are still over 145 million gamers who haven't moved on to next gen yet. That's a whole lot more then 20 million who have.

jagdedge124
jagdedge124

@themc_7  Most people by FAR are still on 360 or PS3 and have not moved on, and most probably will not. Current Gen is here to stay.

@Dannystaples14 You do realize that on the Xbox One you can use ANY external HDD, right? I'm using a 1TB Toshiba external I bought for $50, and it integrates seamlessly. I hated that with the 360 as well, but with the One that is not the case anymore.

dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@Dannystaples14

And how exactly does this apply to the Xbox One? On the One you can use ANY brand or model 3.0 USB hard drive to store games on. Wish they would bring that to the 360, but still happy they upped the HD capacity as my current content would fill over 2 320GB hard drives.

dlCHIEF58

@sumoman23

Yet you fail to mention or account for the fact that is a 3.5" drive (desktop) while the 360 (and PS3, PS4, and One) all use 2.5" SATA dives (laptop) internally. If you are going to do a price comparison, at least compare similar products to give your rant merit.

sumoman23
sumoman23

@sakaixx That would only work if the 360 would let you use an external drive larger than 32gb.

Nice try dude. Just trying to convince yourself to pick one of these up? You wish it was an ssd.

mikeyvp87
mikeyvp87

@parrot_of_adun A 500GB SSD is usually north of $200. There is no way Microsoft is selling a 500SSD for $100.

--Thomas--
--Thomas--

@parrot_of_adun I'm 99.9% sure it's not. If it were, they would make a bigger deal out of it and c'mon... Did you see the pricing of the other 360 hard drives? They were exepensive as hell, so it's reasonable to expect that these ones are as well.

themc_7
themc_7

@jagdedge124 @themc_7 The new consoles are only 10 months into their life cycle and they've already sold 20+ million units. I give the current gen another 18 months, maybe less. It won't be long before developers stop making PS3/360 games. As of November 2015, the xbox 360 is 10 years old.  There's always overlap, but eventually it's out with the old, in with the new. It has happened with every other console generation, why do you believe this one is different?

ebauer1987
ebauer1987

@normanislost @steelmouth Yeah I agree some people are stupid. Why not just sell your 250GB or 320GB HDD for a little cheaper then pay the difference yourself? Oh shoot me in the leg and look at that thought process I did there. Now if people just thought that way life would be so much more easier.

sakaixx
sakaixx

@sumoman23 @sakaixx was only referencing on the prices. for less you could buy a 2tb external which means that thing is one overpriced piece of crap. but my bad, I didn't put the wordings correctly.

@--Thomas-- Note to self: never comment in flamebait articles again...

Seriously, you can't fit a magnetic disk assembly in that form-factor. The lot of you who call bullshit know nothing.

jagdedge124
jagdedge124

@themc_7 @jagdedge124  There is no comparison between now and back then. Xbox and 360 were LIGHT YEARS away from eachother as far as technology upon launch (compare COD Big Red One to COD 2 as an example).. SD to HD etc.

That's just not the case at all here. The differences are too minimal to justify the price or the change over. So it just will not happen.

As far as "sales" that has more to do with new markets opening over the course of a decade that were not available then. I have a full friends list and none but 3 purchased Xbox One, and two of the three spend more time on 360.

I feel Next Genners were taken for a ride, and it may be the Next Genners who may be getting the shorter end of the stick in the long run. Come the Holidays im getting another 360 for the bedroom.

themc_7
themc_7

@jagdedge124 @themc_7 I'm not denying that the last gen was great, I still use my 360 from time to time. However, just look at the Q4 2014-Q1 2015 game line up. Gamers are forced to upgrade if they want to continue playing the franchises that they love. Example: Halo 5, Assassin's Creed Unity, Uncharted 4, The Witcher 3, Forza 5, etc. are all coming exclusively to next gen consoles(and/or PC). Many developers are focusing solely on next gen. Evolve and Sunset Overdrive just to name a couple, are new IPs that are only available on next gen. Eventually gamers are forced to make the upgrade.

jagdedge124
jagdedge124

@themc_7 @jagdedge124  Well not really. Assassins Creed Rogue is something i'm personally interested in and thats exclusively for current gen, not next gen. Halo, well, thats not my thing but like COD on a downtrend.

The Witcher 3 is not gonna be at 1080 anyhow, and sports, well, lets just say Next Gen didn't actually make things much better (in fact what im seeing now with NHL 15 and Madden...worse then current gen).

The rest of what you're mentioning (Evolve and Sunset)  i never heard of so i cant comment.

So as i said current gen is here to stay, and by far most game producers are staying current gen because thats where the majority of gamers are, and where the money is.

ebauer1987
ebauer1987

@jagdedge124 @themc_7 So I kinda stopped reading your post after say 1080p mark. I gotta ask you this. Are you one of those pathetic gamers that has to have everything in 1080p or your going to die? I remember back in the day playing The Legend of Zelda games on both Nintendo, Super Nintendo and N64. Graphics aren't everything.

themc_7
themc_7

@jagdedge124 "The Witcher 3 is not gonna be at 1080 anyhow" That's not really relevant. Doesn't matter if it's 240p, it's not coming to current gen. There will definitely be gamers that stay in the current gen, I agree with you. However as the new consoles get cheaper and the next gen exclusive list grows, people will make the switch. You might not be one of them, but it'll happen.

@jagdedge124 @themc_7

I'm with jagdedge on this one. The ps4 and xbox one seem intruiging, sure, with some games coming out or already out that I'd like to play someday. But my backlog is so big that I'll be spending another year (at least!) playing all the games I want from the 360-ps3 era.
I'm also someone who plays an even older game now and again, I'm talking ps2 and even ps1. Even though 10 years is a long time for a console, especially when comparing it to consoles before, the library of games and depth of those games is so much improved that the comparison stops pretty much right there. Hell I haven't even mentioned all the indie/arcade games that are available; even though they're smaller in size, they're bigger in numbers.

I played out black flag on 360 too, huge AC fan. Looking forward to Rogue as well. One of the few things that would get me to buy a ps4 earlier than a price-drop is if I feel the need to play my yearly AC game so that I'm obliged to buy a new console to play Unity. But as things stand, Rogue's got that covered for me.
