$500 gamepad-equipped tablet launching at GameStop this Halloween

Tegra 3-powered Wikipad coming to specialty retailer October 31; preorder program promising free "full-length titles" begins tomorrow.

by

The first tablet with an attachable gamepad controller, the Wikipad, will launch on October 31 at GameStop stores and through the retailer's website, the company announced today. The tablet will sell for $500, with a preorder program beginning tomorrow, September 7.

How spooky, the Wikipad launches on Halloween.

Those who preorder a Wikipad will receive extras, including one issue of the GameStop-owned Game Informer digital magazine, and "full-length titles." These games were not announced, but GameStop said it will reveal them in the near future.

The Wikipad will support games downloadable through PlayStation Mobile, Nvidia's Tegra Zone, Google Play, and other forthcoming platforms. The device features a 10.1-inch IPS screen and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

The Wikipad will also feature support from cloud gaming company Gaikai, which was recently purchased by Sony for $380 million. Gamers will be able to stream Gaikai's library of titles to their Wikipad, which includes big-name games like Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, and Saints Row: The Third.

I must say it looks very similar to WiiU controller, if this is "the way of the future" then WiiU might just rule next gen like they did with Wii.

I think I'll just get a Vita instead for half the price.

Why this if you can pay $300 for an xbox and get way more flexibility in the way you play games.

This thing is trash. Anyone that spends $500 on this is a complete fool. Accepting preorders before announcing any games?!?!Seriously how could anyone with the slightest bit of gaming knowledge pay $500 for this gimmicky junk? Even buying an iPad would be better than this!

a great idea, but whhhhhaaaaaattttttt !!! look at the price tag. Playing bf3 on the beach in rio against my blighty pals back home appeals but not that much.

I would love a handheld 'full' gaming system, that played full console games, unlike touch pad, ds, or mini vita games...too bad they are taking preorders without mention of a single game.....

I was going to make a comment about how much better it would have been to have a dockable version, but then the price tag is QUITE sufficient an explanation on why they decided on what they did. For the record and as a random note, just think of how much better it would have been to have a pad you could just attach to your own beloved tablet! Also, I must say that this innovation, minus the fact that I would have to get this exclusive version, would almost instantly make me a tablet gamer!--Not now, though, not at that price, not dedicated such as it is...

No thanks rather buy a PS vita than this or wait for more games to come out on the 3ds like Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney 5

Yeah Gamespot, how spooky is it the Wikipad costs $499.99? In my opinion, really spooky, because its cost is not worth buying and their are other electronic devices that cost less than this Wikipad that are worthwhile. It even makes the Playstation Vita with its $249.99 worthwhile even though there afre not a lot of video games for it which people had been criticizing and the Wikipad only play video games that do not give you any gaming experience.

If this add-on controller is made available for other android tablets (like the Galaxy Tab) I would consider buying it, or at least consider this to be a decent idea. But to buy the specific tablet with it, just doesn't seem worth it.

You know, this sounds like an over-sized Vita; not unlike those TV remote with HUGE numbers for old people...

If I was a millionaire and had more time to kill than I already have, then yes, I'd buy one.

Buying gaming consoles might be a smarter choice.

Looks like Razers Project Fiona but without Windows, I'd still rather wait for that right now, even at double the price.

With that money you can spend it on a much cheaper handheld with a bunch of games for it.

So why buy this when there is the PS Vita? Anyone please enlight me cuz I cannot come up with a reason why one would prefer this to a Vita...

Most people who like tablets are idiots.  They don't care that they pay twice as much for an inferior underpowered product, because TABLET IS COOL!

So a tablet glued onto a handheld is worth $500 bucks?

Oh wait, streaming?? Gaming sucks, only 16 gb means its not going to play full games... Failure!

@pqwoei ...I agree in general, but I don't know that that would ever keep me from getting another system if it was a good one. But, yeah, 3DS and Vita both, love em.

@interrasteral7 Oooooooh, your words sound like a kind of common sense that shakes the foundations of gimmicks and malignant political devilry that has plagued the US since the Presidential election of 2008! Not to worry, they are banking on ignorance...

@buccomatic how can it be more powerful than a console that has not been annouced and does not exsist yet and probably won't be called that? or at least i hope ms is not that lame.

franzito
franzito

@DiamondDM13 Boy, this is tablet gaming, if ya want to taste from the big ones, wait for Wii U. VITA is a handheld, like lots we've already seen but more powerful. Now, pick your poison

punkdsk8erdude
punkdsk8erdude

@DiamondDM13 Well the big one is a broader range of gameplay i suppose? Access to Gaikai cloud gaming with console/PC titles, old PS1 games, and google play (what kind of games are on there? probably just casual).

But then it's also a tablet...so it can do all the things a normal tablet can do.

I suppose if I was going to buy an android tablet but also wanted the option of playing good games with physical buttons i might consider this tablet.

But for a gamer to buy this tablet with games as the primary reason, you're right, i would never buy this over the Vita.

Hell, I'd buy both a Vita and 3DS and it would cost less than this tablet lol.

DiamondDM13
DiamondDM13

@punkdsk8erdude There is no reason why one person would really need a tablet. I don't see a single reason to own a tablet... I have a PS3, a Alienware M14x and a Nokia N8 (also the N96, N95, and a couple others), and I will probably get the Vita. Is there any reason to actually get a tablet? I can do everything on a tablet in my cellphone, and on top of that, it actually fits in my pocket...

And I wonder what kind of games you will get in that tablet. If you were to get, say, a God Of War Ascension, or something of that level, it would be nice. But if it's only PS1 games... I mean...No thanks...

@DiamondDM13 @Sk8rlink Hardware talking isn't my cup of tea, sorry if I made you laugh, it wasn't my intention starting a joke also but, if you feel like laughing...

DiamondDM13
DiamondDM13

@Sk8rlink  @franzito Exactly my thought. Big one and the first example that pops to your head is Wii U? I mean really? I wonder what you will say when Xbox 720 and PS4 get announced... Wii U is just Nintendo's console to compete with the PS3 and Xbox 360...

punkdsk8erdude
punkdsk8erdude

@DiamondDM13 I agree. I too have no use for a tablet. My laptop, cell phone, and home consoles are plenty for me. Haven't played handheld games in many years anyway. Part of my considered getting a 3DS & a Vita when they both first were announced, but I really wouldn't  play them very often.

And for someone who has a smart phone and a laptop...a tablet is just useless.

Now for someone who had neither a smart phone or laptop, I would say a Tablet makes a lot of sense.

But this gaming tablet i have a feeling isn't going to do very well.
