50-game Atari classics compilation hitting DS this fall

Publisher packing in 50 Atari 2600 and arcade titles on Nintendo's portable with single-card multiplayer support; notable games include Pong, Centipede, Space Duel, others.

by

Atari released a collection of classics for the Nintendo DS five years ago to poor critical reception due in part to the game's "remixed graphics." However, the publisher is willing to try again.

Atari will be making the old new again this fall.

Atari today announced Atari's Greatest Hits: Volume 1, a new classics compilation for Nintendo's popular portable. The title packs in 50 Atari 2600 and arcade titles, including popular games Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, and Space Duel. The game is due out in North America this fall.

For those who don't want to play the dated games alone, Atari has updated 20 of the titles with single-card multiplayer. Unfortunately, Atari only confirmed that Pong and Space Duel would receive the special multiplayer treatment.

Additionally, the collection will include a digital copy of each game's manual, an Atari memorabilia showcase, and an Atari trivia minigame, where players race against the clock to answer history questions about the company.

I wonder how many people will buy this and suddenly realize that a lot of old Atari games were utter crap? Yeah, we all thought they were cool at the time, but few if any of them have aged well.

That's nice... Flash games on the Internet are free though... I thought we were passed the 78-in-1 games of old...

The most important reason why people would choose to play such games (me inclusive) is because they really bring back fond memories of childhood - memories which are distinct to every person and can never be fully understood by someone who doesn't have such memories. @Gooper_Blooper Maybe money is the reason for this decision. If this works, they'll come up with a Volume II.

I cant help but wonder if when the 3DS drops they are going to re release this in 3d. ........... can you imagine???? big blocky atari in 3d? My only hope is that on that collection they do include E.T.

Why don't they just release the "Entire Atari 2600 game library" once and for all on every platform and be done with it. All of the Atari 2600 licenced and unlicenced atari 2600 bootleg games.

If they included that new Halo 2600 game I would deff buy this. @noumanpoke: You need to brush up on your gaming history noob. Buy this game son.

For those that don't know you can find the list of games by searching online. Sadly No E.T.

These games are sooo out of date that they are virtually unplayable. Now if they could only put out a 50 classic NES games collection...THAT would be GOLD!

Imagine, only a few decades ago each of those games had to be bought individually on a large disc. Look where we are now.

This is good, since my Atari 2600 broke about a year ago. I hope they will include some of the great non-Atari developed games like Pitfall and Pitfall 2 in this collection.

Let's not forget other noteable classics like Haunted House, Spyhunter, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Riddle of the Sphynx. I spent the better part of my childhood attached to my Atari 2600 console, and distinctly remember playing games into the wee hours on the b/w 13" TV that my parents had given me. Yeah, I'm dating myself...

I still play my Atari 7800 from time to time. I really encourage people to buy a 2600/7800 to experience the old classics in a more authentic way. Compilations aren't bad, but you don't get that same feeling as you would playing the games on the actual system. You can get an Atari system with 20+ games, for the price of one PS3/360 game, so I say it's worth it. Atari was really the launching pad of gaming. Yars Revenge, Mario, Berzerk, Pole Position, Enduro, Yars Revenge, Pong, Pitfall, so many more I can't think of atm. Atari is more than enough proof that games don't need to have amazing graphics to be enjoyable.

If it's cheap $29.99 or less, that wouldn't be to bad. Still, there are only a few 2600 games that are even worth playing these days and most of them came from Activision. Games like RiverRaid, Pitfall, Decathalon, SeaQuest, Pressure Cooker & MegaMania. I don't know any gamer who was waste their time playing a game like Pong.

Any chance Adventure and Maze Craze are included? If so, I'm sold.

I doubt this would contain such classics as Custer's Revenge, Gigolo, or Beat 'em and Eat 'em.

I need to dust up my Atari 2600 when I go home for holidays this year. It was working 4 years ago when I last tried it, hope still does.

Ah, yes. Those were the days. When high resolution graphics meant sprites that were more than one color. Yet many of those games are still a blast to play today. I'm definitely looking forward to playing these classics on the go. I would also like to see the 2600 versions of other classics like Ms. Pac-Man and Space Invaders again, but I'm not going to hold my breath. This is because those games were licensed to the old Atari in the first place, and I doubt the current Atari (or even the current rights holders of the licensed games) would even try to re-license them. For those, I guess I'll just have to search around for an actual 2600.

I still have my atari 2600.....stil works and I break it out from time to time. Now a days I am not feeling these old games, especially when they are bundled in compilations...Loved the games when they were newer, but now, not so much.

I think the only way to play these classics is to play them on their original system. For example, I just bough a used but like new Atari 7800 last week over Amazon. I had 2 other Atari systems, but they didn't work worht a hoot. I have 78 games all 2600 and 7800, and let me tell you it brought back the most wonderful feelings of my childhood since I hadn't played any of these games in years. I have other Atari compilations for different systems and they don't feel authentic at all. You really gotta go back and experience them on the real thing. Needless to say, I plan on having some killer retro nights at my house! =)

@ vadicta - I see some sense in what you're saying, but it seems like it's working on the assumption that Atari are forcing people to buy it... when of course it's just a choice. If there are people out there (me included) who would like to buy and play this, and don't see it as Atari ripping us off, what's wrong with that? Atari are just doing something which makes good business sense... those that don't want to buy it can do just that - don't buy it - and it's no skin off their nose that the game compilation actually exists...

Ogelthorpe

I grew up playing these games in the early 80's. Although there is a high nostalgia factor trust me when I say that these games are awful compared to the awesome games we play today. Yea, I said it.

vadicta

I can't believe how many people are fighting for Atari in this release. They've released one of these anthologies of theirs on ever single platform to date. This isn't some new idea that they've suddenly had, or anything. They're just continuing to milk the nostalgia of gamers who played those games back in the day. It's the laziest move in the book re-releasing your back-catalog, and Atari does it all the time. Other companies might do this once or twice, when Atari's done it over ten times from the best I could find. They just continue to milk you for games you've already owned, and the worst thing is, you're defending them for it.

Gooper_Blooper
Gooper_Blooper

Hey, this has potential. Only thing I don't like is that the collection contains only 50 games - It would be entirely possible to put EVERY Atari 2600 game EVER CREATED onto one DS cart. I used to have the GBA Activision Anthology, that thing had over 70 games on it - every game Activision could release without incurring legal problems, including unreleased games!

it was great------back in the day. you start playing it again today and nostalgia can only go so far then you itch to play something better...

This is good since I think it would be pretty hard to find an Atari that doesn't cost a fortune these days?
