3DS surpasses PS3 lifetime sales in Japan

Media Create report states Nintendo has sold 8 million units of the portable device so far.

The 3DS has now sold more units in Japan than the PS3.

"It's a-me, outselling more than Sony!"

According to a recent Media Create report (via Nintendo Life and Eurogamer), Nintendo has sold a total of 8,799,378 3DS units in its native country. By comparison, Sony has sold 8,716,260 units of the PS3. The 3DS debuted in March 2011, while the PS3 made its start in November 2006.

On a related note, Sony has sold 1,074,621 units of the PS Vita within a year of its release in Japan back in December 2011. The lifetime sales numbers of its cousin, the PSP, were at 19,488,236 units. Why not compare the Dualshock 3 controller with the 3DS then? Lol, PS3 isn't even a handheld console.

I knew this long for a year that Sony it's not so strong in Japan, all your beloved Western kind of games, you know in Japan they don't almost care for them.

And it outsold the 360 in half the time, but that didn't seem to warrant its own article. Yes, we know that Japan prefers its handhelds to its home consoles.  Why the fuck is this news?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Wow, this article is ridiculous. Reminds me why i rarely come to this site. Jonathan Toyad next time you write something try comparing two things that are "similar".  For example, one handheld to another handheld. Quit hating. Like you said PS3 came out in 2006  so why are you STILL trying to make it look bad. Just let it go already.

It doesn't surprise me that a densely populated and mobile country like Japan would go for handheld gaming as much as it does for home gaming.  And I know that the Monster Hunter series drove lots of PSP sales there.  The thing I don't understand is what's driving sales of the 3DS...do they have some games for that system that we don't, or do they just really love them some Mario?

Zeran_kariashi

And this is relevant how? Households with multiple children will usually have handhelds for each child, where as consoles are usually shared by the whole family. If a handheld DOESN'T outsell a console, it's a POS handheld.

I had no idea so many people didn't play PS3 in Japan that is kind of surprising. They must prefer handhelds if they sell so well over there.

Well its Sony's own fault , They should focus on More first party exclusives like uncharted , kill zone , God of War  and the Upcoming The last of us, i think Sony is trying to Compete with Nintendo and Microsoft at the same time, The ps Vita had a great lineup at lunch with games like Uncharted the golden abis , MVC3 Wipeout 2048 then later on with Mortal Kombat, Metal Gear Solid hd collection, but they took a lot of time until these past few months with street fighter X tekken, Assassins Creed 3 and the Awful Black Ops Declassified , when Nintendo almost every week releases a Good title either handheld or console , its like Cmon Pick up the paste.

First, obligatory handhelds are way more popular in Japan due to its commuting lifestyles. Second, the PS3 is the least Japanese of the three PlayStation consoles. Sony has had this huge disconnect with the Japanese audience and that is shameful. Importers of Japanese games love the PS3's region free capabilities, but at the same time, find nothing worth importing as opposed to the PS1&2's plethora of Japan only games. This is where the Wii U steps in. I hope and pray that it will succeed in Japan to stir up Japanese game development. Make it the first truly successful HD console on the Japanese market. Win Wii U, for the love of God please win.

No surprise here. The 3DS is a phenomenal handheld system, and lets face it. Sony has had a disconnect with the gaming community in the Handheld market and even the console market as of late. I own a Vita and a PS3 and they are both by far the least used of my gaming platforms (in fact I still don't own a single Vita game, because there has yet to be a worthwhile title released). I know people will continue to criticize Nintendo, which is nothing new. However, if you can't admit that Nintendo understands gaming then you may be in complete denial.

Gamers love to shoot themselves in the foot. You complain about a lack of innovation in the industry, stagnation, and endless sequels that do little to mix the gameplay up, but then when there actually is a competitor that tries to do new things, you just hand-wave, write them off as gimmicks, and encourage more stagnation. Everyone should be supporting Nintendo because I got news for you. There's never going to be this magic stepping stone where suddenly gaming is taken to a completely new level and we were all playing with standard button controllers a moment ago but now we're playing with full virtual reality holodecks. Change is often gradual and you've got to be willing to show that you want a taste of something new. Nintendo may not always deliver with their innovations but that's part of the gamble when you take risks. If gamers aren't willing to try something different and just want to stick to the same thing then you have no right to complain when the next Call of Duty 28: Black Ops 7 comes out. I for one, am happy for Nintendo's strong sales in the 3DS.

They have Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate right now for the 3DS and Monster Hunter 4 is coming out soon over there. There's also games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy that helped drive sales. Paper Mario Sticker Star seems to be doing well over there too. I do remember Super Mario 3D Land and MarioKart 7 spiked 3DS sales when those came out.

 @bochog3 What are you talking about? Look at the PSP numbers. Handhelds own the market there. The real reason besides games like Monster Hunter is that when everyone around you is likely to have a PSP or DS then having online play is unnecessary. Street pass was a hit in japan because it's such a closer society where lots more people are in the same area. I heard street pass was kinda fun in bigger city's here like NYC but definitely not where I live. It's a cultural difference. Handhelds always should out sell consoles imo. Growing up me and my bro had one console to share and play with. Up to PS3. The only handheld we shared was the first GameBoy and it wasn't even mine. They just made him share with me. Every handheld after that we both got and so did almost every kid at school.Please readjust your line of thinking.

 @Smithers2286 There already is a worthwhile title released, bro. It's Persona 4 Golden. It's really worth playing, and worth the money. Just my opinion though, since I'm a huge JRPG fan and a Persona Series fan.

 @Smithers2286  I must add Nintendo understands gaming because the company started of making card games in the late 1800's so the company definantally knows gaming period.

Alotta the people dissing the 3DS cry about a need for innovation. Yet, they'll dis the 3DS and have the last 3 iterations of Call of Deuchebag on their shelves. Pathetic little creatures.

 @Derpalon Pretty much the same thing I think.

Look at the 360 or the PS3... name one game hard to find that worth something in a collection on ebay... there is nothing, everything is pure commercial games...The Wii have Metroid Prime Collection, Xenoblade Chronicles, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn and I am suspecting The Last Story will be the same case.This is how you know a console is healthy.

 @Shadowmax889  @Zeran_kariashi Who said Japan? Yeah, that is the subject but he didn't say Japan. I don't live in Japan but growing up me a my bro had our own handhelds and one home console. Same goes for my friends.

 @FusionRain What if i don't want to? are u gonna make me? LOL  Show me where The Psp owned the Handheld , Nintendo has always been on top of the Handheld marked Now tablets and Phones own the Marked, all im saying is that Sony has to change their strategy they could have a lot of exclusive games on the Ps Vita, the system has a lot of potential to make great games of and some how Its not happening maybe its to expensive to make vita games idk

 @nutaku If you mean that something rules (is the dominant authority) or rules (as in thinking that it's the best, i.e. "Sony FTW!") is determined by the context (FACT). I would think that it's easy to decide which one white_wind is referring to.

 @eva02langley  @Derpalon

Highly agreed, I read one comment where someone had the nerve to say that innovation should be left up to the 3rd parties and that all the developers should do is provide powerful enough hardware (obviously an attack towards Nintendo) yet Sony/Microsoft did just that and look what did the 3rd parties do? Dumb down games in order to "broaden appeal", glitchy unfinished games started becoming normal, DLC was abused, so obviously simply providing more powerful hardware is not going to encourage innovation among developers.

Plus if Nintendo wasn't about change and doing things differently, gaming would not be where it is today, that standard controller that most people love would probably be much worse since pretty much everything about it originated from Nintendo. Yes Atari, SEGA, Sony, and Microsoft have all played their important roles but Nintendo clearly has had the most significant role in making gaming the way it is today. Those who say that Nintendo's "hurting gaming" is simply stupid when none of their ideas have really directly affected the games we play today.

Motion controls? That's still an option and it's not like your favorite franchise has suffered because of it. Know what has affected your favorite franchise? DLC, online multiplayer, things that the others introduced. I used to LOVE Capcom fighters but ever since unlockable characters became paid DLC downloads, I've avoided them since.

FusionRain

 @Zeran_kariashi  Are you talking to me because I completely agree with what your saying. I feel the exact same way. Read my comments you'll find the same way of thinking.

Zeran_kariashi
Zeran_kariashi

 @FusionRain  @Shadowmax889 It's the same regardless. Handhelds are generally for personal use, while a console would be shared by the family. There's still a much greater number of people who will purchase a handheld vs the number of families who would have multiple copies of a console, so the comparison isn't really accurate. Not to mention handheld games generally trend toward game play that can be done on the go, while consoles usually have games where you really want to sit down and play in one place for awhile. The two really aren't comparable at all.

FusionRain
FusionRain

 @bochog3 What? I never said the PSP owned the market. I said Handhelds sell well. Also the problem with the Vita is that instead of making portable games they are worried about porting games from home consoles. It's their PS3 "like" experiences on the go. They need to focus on exclusives like you've said. PS: the Vita is one of the easiest consoles to develop for I doubt it's expensive either. Sony likes to help funding for exclusives.

 @BloodyxNights  @eva02langley  @Derpalon

Sega was the first to create a console capable of online but is was through the XBox that the first online community manifested itself, then Microsoft later created a legitimate community that we all know as XBox Live.

Also the universal achievement system is what Microsoft first implemented. Of course these ideas were present before but Microsoft was the first to fully realize them. While I still don't think achievements are all that important, the online community has very much become a integral part of gaming.

I'm not against any 1st party developer despite growing up with SEGA and Sony and being a huge fan of Nintendo nowadays, I still appreciate what Microsoft has offered to the gaming world, plus I have a 360 and love it.

BloodyxNights
BloodyxNights

 @abHS4L88  @eva02langley  @Derpalon

I guess they were the first to have an online store to release older titles. However they were not the first to create an online community/gaming. That first started with Sega Dreamcast. Achievements are also subjective imo games had achievements or trophies in them before Xbox, they just were in X game only.

Maybe I am just being a Sony/Sega/Nintendo fanboy, but I think that it is because of Xbox that this generation of gaming is one of the worst to be living in. But that is just me, I've said my part. .-.

abHS4L88

 @BloodyxNights  @eva02langley  @Derpalon

It is based on our preferences, I didn't care for Twilight Princess but I had a blast with Skyward Sword, didn't play the DS Zeldas so I can't say much about those.

Microsoft did contribute to bringing the online community aspect to gaming, along with introducing an online store and using it to release classic titles. They also brought achievements (don't care about them personally but I know a lot of people do) so they have done their part also.

BloodyxNights
BloodyxNights

 @abHS4L88  @eva02langley  @Derpalon

Sorry it effected my experience with Skyward Sword, and Twilight Princess. I couldn't stand playing it on motion controls. I did buy the gamecube version of Twilight Princess and beat it that way but I had no options for Skyward Sword. Also the touch screen Zelda games were also a huge let down to me. So I'll disagree with you there. However I'm a huge Nintendo fan regardless, but I think that both Sony, and Nintendo played a huge part in gaming, Sega even did as well with trying to make it so gamers could go online when they played.

Only company that I know of that brought nothing to the table has been Microsoft.
