3DS eShop delayed worldwide
System update with online storefront and Web browser not launching until June 6 in North America and Europe, June 7 in Japan.
In late January, prior to the 3DS's worldwide debut, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said the eShop for the new glasses-free 3D portable would open for business in May. Now, however, the company has backtracked on that statement.
According to a brief statement on Nintendo.com today, the 3DS will receive a system update on the evening of June 6 Pacific time in North America that will bring the eShop, Web browser, and "new features and enhancements" to the portable. The same update will be applied to Japanese and European systems on June 7.
The Nintendo eShop for the 3DS will house an array of downloadable content, including a new 3D Classics software line. Unfortunately, Nintendo has not said what content will be available to purchase in the shop when the update arrives. Capcom has said it intends to have Mega Man Legends 3: Prototype Version ready for the storefront's launch.
The House of Mario seems to have delayed the update for a strategic reason. The system update will arrive the evening prior to Nintendo's 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing, which is slated for 9 a.m. PDT on June 7.
