3 Reasons the Xbox One May Struggle to Catch The PS4

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Slippery slope.

The Xbox One is lagging behind the PlayStation 4. This has been true since the two consoles launched last November, and the distance has been widening with every month that passes. Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison already spoke at length about the Xbox One's unenviable position, brushing aside many concerns as he brought up the old "marathon, not a sprint" analogy. Although I do agree that it's too early for Microsoft to throw in the towel, there are serious detriments to getting off to such a slow start. And if the Xbox One doesn't gain ground soon, the problems could snowball so quickly that there's no hope of catching up.

Dwindling third-party exclusives

Microsoft doesn't rely on its first-party studios nearly as much as Sony and Nintendo do. That disparity hasn't been a concern in the last decade, since Microsoft has secured exclusive deals with external teams to bolster its lineup. Look no further than Gears of War to see how smart strategic partnerships can boost the popularity of a system. Did it matter that Microsoft didn't develop Gears? Of course not. Most people were focused more on fending off the nasty locusts than worrying about who put a chainsaw on a gun. Epic agreed to keep Gears off Sony's and Nintendo's systems, and even sold the franchise rights to Microsoft earlier this year.

Who knows how many games other than Sunset Overdrive will be exclusive.
Who knows how many games other than Sunset Overdrive will be exclusive.

You can see why Microsoft has been so keen to establish these types of relationships. Microsoft Studio boss Phil Spencer spoke about their tactics last year, saying, "I think to some out there there's a fixation with which studios you own, which studios you work with, and for better or worse I'm not fixated on that." Microsoft has to either pay a first-party studio to make a game or contract an outside team, so either way it's shelling out money, right?

Unfortunately, this mindset that could spell trouble for Microsoft. If a game is being kept away from other platforms, that developer has to be compensated for lost potential sales. When the Xbox 360 shot out ahead of the PlayStation 3, it established itself as the leader in the high-definition race, so it was easy for Microsoft to convince publishers to partner up with them. And the same was true early this generation, when no one was sure how the chips would fall. But now that the PlayStation 4 is much more popular, Microsoft will have to pay more and more money to keep games away from Sony. And that price will only rise as the gap widens. It's not easy to negotiate when you're no longer in a position of power. That means we'll see more games land on multiple platforms, and there will be added pressure on 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, and Lionhead Studios to carry the load.

Titanfall is already being kept away from the PlayStation 4, as are Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break, but who knows how willing those teams will be to do the same with their next games knowing that they're ignoring a huge part of their potential audience.

Follow your friends to the end

Remember when you could play games in your basement for hours without ever encountering another person? Well, the days of video games being an escape from social commitments have evaporated, and it's not as bad as my teenage self would have thought. Games are now digital hangouts where friends, strangers, and enemies square off, so even when there's no one else inside your house, there are still people playing with you somewhere in the world. It's kind of scary, kind of magic, and has dramatically changed how I play games.

Leaderboard racers are the best part of Trials Fusion.
Leaderboard racers are the best part of Trials Fusion.

As more people purchase a PlayStation 4 in favor of an Xbox One, the communities of multiplayer gamers will subsequently gravitate toward Sony's console. So when you're figuring out which version of Evolve to get later this year, part of that decision process will involve which system has a larger player base. It makes sense, right? If you buy a multiplayer-centric game, you're going to want as many people as possible to play with. That idea extends further when your friends play games as well. Once one friend decides to buy Destiny on the PlayStation 4, the others will invariably follow suit. It takes only one domino being pushed to start a chain.

Maybe you're like me and prefer playing alone. Well, if you have friends who also play games, you'll still have to make the same choices as those people who crave multiplayer. Last week Trials Fusion came out, and my colleagues and I have been vying for leaderboard supremacy. High-score chases are my favorite part of the game, so having as many times to chase as possible exponentially improves my fun. That's just science. Well, just about every person in the office is chasing my ghost on the PlayStation 4. And as more people jump on the PlayStation 4 train, that will soon become the default choice for any game with a with a connected environment. If Microsoft doesn't turn things around, Call of Duty, Madden, and every other competitive game is going to sell better on the PlayStation 4, making it even harder for the Xbox One to come back.

Words speak louder than actions

All of the Xbox buildings in the world can't change how people feel.
All of the Xbox buildings in the world can't change how people feel.

There are many reasons why someone would purchase a video game console. Price is a large part of the equation, and everything else related to that system either makes the cost seem reasonable or much too high. What's the current library of games look like? And what are you interested in buying in the near future? Are there enough streaming apps for when you'd rather watch a movie? Do you have friends who favor one system over another? We take a look at all of this stuff. But there's one other element that could be the biggest factor of all.

Word of mouth matters. Any discerning person out there probably rolls their eyes at marketing. Sure, we may like some commercials, but we're never felt compelled to buy an energy drink or specific toilet paper brand just because we've been inundated with billboards, right? No one would admit that ads sway their buying habits (even though they totally do), but word of mouth isn't so easy to disassociate yourself with. It's been proven to be far more effective than traditional marketing, and once popular opinion slides in one direction, it can be difficult to change that momentum.

This is a dangerous situation for Microsoft. As the PlayStation 4 becomes more and more popular, it will become the default console. Remember last generation? The Wii exploded in large part because every mainstream publication was talking about it. It graced the covers of magazines and found its way into popular sitcoms, and eventually, it became the thing that everyone wanted. Even Microsoft admits they've been struggling with messaging since the Xbox One reveal last year, and even though they've backtracked on many of their restrictions, it's much harder to change people's minds.

Microsoft is right in that the race is still in the early going. But they have to realize that once you fall too far behind, it gets incredibly difficult to come back. There are just too many elements the second and third place platforms have to fight against to remain relevant. We'll see how things play out, but Microsoft has to start making a move sooner rather than later.

The huge problem with this article is that, well, it's based on misinterpretations and fallacies.

The Wii sold as well as it did because it was sold en masse to the non gaming crowd. It's evident by the lack of third party sales on the console. No COD, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, etc sold well on the Wii (if they were even available). Moreover, the *lack* of sales of the Wii U shows you what happens when the fickle "flavor of the month" consumer leaves because your month is up.

As for the other points, the XB 360 crushed... CRUSHED the PS3 until the PS3 Slim came out. Even after that, the 360 still dominated the US. However, Western developers made multiplats available for the PS3 from release date until present. If you can make money of a 5-10& code rewrite, why not?

Speaking of, if what the author wrote is something he believes, then how did the PS3 catch the 360?

This whole article reads like something that should have come out of system wars...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Conjecture here: could it have caught the 360 due to blu-ray player capabilities (hey, if I have to look at buying a video game console, a blu-ray player, or both, why not get the hardware that does both already) and generally better hardware performance? PS3 came with a bigger hard drive for a while until the 360 had it's 4th or 5th generation out there. Also, the 360 started experiencing significant RROD issues until the 3rd gen, I believe. Additionally, 360 didn't have wireless until 3rd or 4th gen unless you wanted to purchase the $75 adapter.

Not saying those *are* the reasons, or potentially the only reasons. I just think those could have something to do with it - it's why I switched over to solely the PS3 for a while. Just a thought, may not answer your question though.

<< LINK REMOVED >> RRoD was a launch issue. IMO, the PS3 caught the 360 because it dropped to the same price as the 360, had compelling exclusives, and features like Blu Ray.

If the XB1 drops to the same price as the PS4, and all these "exclusives" that Patcher keeps talking about come to the light of day, there is no reason that the XB1 can't start to out sell the PS4. It's already happened with the PS3 and 360.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Sony had a massiave fanbase from the 6th gen. whom were annoyed by sony's arrogance when creating the PS3 ( no games and a 600 price point). Once sony got it together and started to churn out good solid first party games then the tide turned. Microsoft doesn't have that name recogination yet and haven't really proved to be able to sustain a steady launch of console exclusives throughout a console gen.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah, I feel like the RROD thing kept going on for longer than launch. :\ But oh well.

I agree - this race is far from over. I think Patcher's intent was to say that too much longer of this pace and the snowball effect will take place, but there is a lot that can happen between now and the end of the year. Fair game for any console. Especially when Halo rolls out and steamrolls the competition, per the norm. lol

Microosoft painted themselves into a corner here. People say they can remove the kinect problem is the Kinect is the main factor which makes the X1 different than the PS4. Microsoft drops the price to 400 then alll of a sudden they cost the same amount as a rival who has a more powerful console with a pretty sizable sales lead and more variety in their first party lineups. Microsoft knows this which is why they have not created a kinectless system yet; in spite of the need to do so.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe something has changed that I'm not aware of, but all the articles I read leading up to the release of these systems said it was six to one, half dozen to another. Am I wrong? I really don't think anyone will choose one system over the other purely because of the actual hardware components (again, ignoring peripherals such as the Kinect for now).

PS3 does have a sales lead, but is it really that insurmountable? Right now, I think a large part of that lead has to do with the console sales lead, which is what Xbox needs to fix first (after all, Titanfall sold a lot of copies this past month, but they need more market saturation).

Not saying that a drop in price (related to separate selling of Kinect) would fix everything, but I think it'd be a big step.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>from what I read the PS4 is around 30% more powerful than the X1 whether that changes with DX 12; secret sauce, or whatever other nonsense microsoft comes out with is up for debate. With that said I would be inclined to agree that alot of console gamers look for games first then hardware components when choosing a console; however, the games have to be above and beyond what the comp. is selling. The PS2 was the weakest of the big 3 in the 6th gen but is the best selling console of all time. However, look at the games it had exclusive to the system though. Nowadays that dynamic no longer exist so gamers are going to go with the console that runs games the best all things being equal; at this point its the ps4.

To your second point titanfall sold copies but it didn't really change the xbones place in the console race. Ps4 was still outselling it and this is without a great number of triple A titles for the PS4. If sony is leading like this right now without games what happens when the games start rolling off the line for sony? What does microsoft have to stem the tide outside of Halo? Removing the kinect may result in a sales spike but in the grand scheme of things it wont really matter. This console race was decided the second Microsoft tried to pass those DRM policies.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Agreed; the OG xbox and the 360 rode the halo franchise as well as gears into relevance. This brings up the first point in the article which I agree with. For what we know microsoft only really has three first party studio's. one of those dedicated to forza, the second to halo, and the third to kinect games revolving around fable. there really isn't a whole lot there when you look past the juggernaut that is Halo. Microsoft isn't going to just have to make more IP's they will actually have to sustain those IP's throughout a console gen while introducing new ones to market. I think microsoft has that everything must move mass numbers mentality and it is causing them to double down on a few IP's rather than expanding their portfolio; this is different from what sony is doing with their first party studios which is actually a much more sustainable practice in the long haul.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah, Playstation has actually done a really good job of mixing things up and having some variety - consistent with investment portfolio good practices, basically. 360 crushed it for a while because they had Halo killing everything, Gears 1 was a total novelty, and they were doing pretty well with their online gaming. Unfortunately (for Microsoft), I think it's fair to say that Gears has been in decline since #2 - expectations were set really high after #1, and the fans were kind of let down. They still sold plenty of copies of 3 and that prequel one, but not near as many as #1 and #2.

At this point, I think Microsoft is hoping that Titanfall is the next Gears (again, something fresh into the world of all the classic warfare games).

Also, for most people getting one console: You can spend $400 and then get maybe 3 used games for that console for the same price as an X1. :\ Good points.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>No prob; also I am enjoying the conversation that I am having with you as well. I think sony's advantage in the games department comes from the wide variety of first party exclusive's that they have. FPS ( killzone, etc.); Sports ( MLB the show); JRPGS ( ni no kuni); third person ( last of us, etc.). Microsofts exclusive may sell alot but they are highly segmented at this point just Halo and gears with gears arguably on the decline. This dynamic is pretty big specially if you are a single console gamer ( like I am ) for your investment you want to make sure that you are going to get a variety of exclusive AAA titles up to the last second ( like last of us). Microsoft hasn't really shown that they are capable of doing that yet. They killed off the OG xbox; and left the 360 to the mercy of third party developers for the last 2 years of that consoles lifecycle. Maybe they have somethng at E3 cooked up but I wouldn't bet on it lls

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I'm not entirely sure I'm familiar with Sony's exclusives that are supposed to be that good...did they announce another God of War game? haha Kidding aside, you are right that games are the really important part to any console. And yes, the DRM policies REALLY hurt Microsoft in the public's sight. I just don't think this war is over.

And actually, I really do believe that dropping their price to match Sony's would go a long way in salving over old wounds and keeping a lot of people who were originally planning to jump over to Sony. Not saying it would cure everything, but it'd be a big step in the right direction to encourage gamers to stay with them. Only time will tell though. Thanks for the info about the hardware - I wasn't aware of it.

I see that the most commented/hated thing is Kinect, I really DON'T understand why. There's no REAL argument against it, just blind hatred because it't pöpular to hate. You should see your own comments, if you weren't so blind you would see how much BS you spout.

<< LINK REMOVED >> hellgast, I hold no ill-will towards the Kinect. It has done some really good things for the 360, and has proved to be interesting. The real problem? I don't want to HAVE to buy it. I think it's a great PERIPHERAL item that people should have the option of buying. I know I would not use it, therefore I am adamantly against having to pay an extra $100 for it (after all, this is the only real hardware-based difference between the PS4 and X1 prices).

I really do think it's a great little toy and could be a key selling point down the road as more popular games implement its technology and functionality.

Until that moment comes, I think it should be sold as it currently is....a peripheral.

@hellgast0 I'm not going to lie, in it's current state the Kinect is pretty bad. I would estimate it works about 20% of the time in a quiet room with me speaking loud enough and enunciating properly. Three of my other friends have about the same results with one saying his works about half the time...That's just unacceptable on a console based around this peripheral. I shouldn't have to repeat myself twelve times to get something to work, if it even decides to. Also, with a nice piece of the processing power going towards the Kinect, it takes away from what could have been used making games that do not use the Kinect better. I don't "hate" it but I think it definitely needs a ton of work and I can see why people talk crap about it.

Just to chime in...I don't think Sony could afford to drop their prices too severely as a counter-move, but if X1 could sell a Kinect-less package at $400, I think they would open up their sales. What's more, I've spoken with several friends who have mentioned that they would be interested in purchasing an X1 without the Kinect at some point in the near future. Not as many people want to spent $100 for an item that has not been fully developed / utilized by the most popular games.

I've seen a lot of "demons" as it relates to consoles over the years. One thing I've always found about Microsoft is that they oftentimes tend to nickel and dime you to death. Their 360 was cheaper than the PS3, sure, but that was only if you wanted to play with the basic shell - hard drive was crap compared to the PS3, didn't have wireless, had to purchase a charging kit or batteries for your controllers, didn't play blu-rays, etc (this doesn't even touch on the multiple red ring issues and related $ repairs which I personally have dealt with before).

That said, they became popular because they came out with the most fantastic games (especially online). That's no sleight to the PS3's library, but Microsoft brought you the best online experiences, and ultimately, the largest gaming base in the world is the one wanting to play multiplayer games online (IMO). Sure, you had to pay for that too, but that allowed Microsoft the flexibility to develop it and bring you features you couldn't get on the PS3 (Xbox Live Parties, cheap headsets that didn't have batteries, etc).

At this juncture, I think it's hard for people to fully trust Microsoft. They are still doing well and said some of the right things after their utterly disastrous comments last year (regarding used games and connectivity), but some of my friends who are current 360 users have said they plan to switch over to Sony when they buy the next-gen. There are still holdouts awaiting Halo 5 and Wolfenstein, but they are fewer, and farther in-between.

For me personally, I get tired of Microsoft's antics. They revised their 360 about 3 times before finally fixing the red ring issue, which cost a lot of people time and money. As noted before, they charged lots of money for peripherals for last-gen, and this was on top of paying to play online (which they also increased the price of within the past year or so). Given their adamant statements about getting rid of the used game market and requiring constant connectivity (along with their current refusal to sell the X1 without the Kinect), I'm not sure I fully trust them. What's to keep them from coming back to the Used Game issue in another year or two when everyone is firmly entrenched? Nothing, really. And frankly, I probably will purchase an Xbox One at some point because I admit I've had some good times on it. This isn't meant to just be an Xbox hate-fest, even though it may sound that way. They've finally come up with a great Xbox 360, have had some wildly popular online games and features, and have done some great things with their current hardware.

I think the difference in hardware performance is neglible. It basically comes down to A) I don't want to pay $100 for a Kinect that I will *never* use (I'm just not that kind of gamer), B) as noted by the author, many of my friends are migrating to the PS4, and C) Halo 5 isn't here yet. When that (and other comparable exclusives) arrives, I think they will do quite well. Until they fix A or hurry up C, I'm not sure they'll keep up with the PS4.

Reason 4: It offers practically the same amount of actual gaming content (or lack thereof) as the Ps4, but asks for $100 more.

Sony was pretty much in this position when the PS3 launched. The 360 was so far ahead of them that it almost didn't seem worth entering the race.

After a juddery start, the PS3 gained its momentum albeit slowly. This taught Sony a lesson in humility and how it couldn't just expect to keep riding the success of the PS2 into that generation.

While I will openly admit that I am a PS fanboy, I do hope that Microsoft can learn the same lessons and keep Sony true in competition. The only people who then win, are the gamers.

Microsoft could solve the disparity in sales in one fell swoop. They simply need to offer a kinect-less SKU for $400. I don't get why they are so reluctant to appease their customers. There are a lot of people out there who are ready to throw their money at Microsoft if they would just honor this one request.

If Microsoft sold a Kinect-less Xbox (I have not used my Kinect one single time, for anything, since I bought my console, so I would have loved this deal) they would see a surge, albeit a brief one, in sales.

I personally would be more inclined to tell my friends to buy an xbox if Microsoft would make the interface less wretched for gaming.

@bforrester420 @BillyColeman @Coldpain The X1 would still sell. People just need it to be affordable. Do you remember why the PS3 didn't sell when it first came out? It was too expensive. Lower initial investment = higher perceived value.

What's interesting, is many companies make mistakes... Including Sony... Although I have to point and vouch for Sony : Not one console Sony made has failed to deliver... PS1, PS2 (Still most sold console ever) PS3, and now the PS4... Every one has been greatly successful...

As far as consoles go, Sonys track record is highly praised...

That being said, the Xbox One is Awesome, I'm a Sony guy... but the whole performance BS fanboy wars are pointless... I've seen devs do amazing things with ancient hardware (A great example of this is The Last of Us) I didn't even know the PS3 could do what they did... but that proves with the new hardware of both consoles, games will keep getting better for both parties. It's all about the Devs and coding...

I think MS made some poor choices this gen. And they have a hell of a battle to compete with Sony, but that doesn't make me deny (As a Sony guy) I wish we had games like Fable, and Gears of War... and for those reasons, I will definitely get an Xone in the future. I think MS would be smart to make something similar to compete against the Vita... allowing remote and portable play... why they haven't ... idk...

It's all about the games in the end... no matter which console they are on...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Both gears and fable have lost their luster. fable is pretty much dead now; and if GOWJ is any indication the gears franchise is dying as well. Microsoft only has Halo to fall back on at this moment.

Other than Populous I've never like any of Peter Molyneux games. I've bought them all and found them to be more hype than substance. Molyneux should get an award for being salesman of the century.

It mainly boils down to MS pissed off too much of their consumer base. Even when they reversed the policies, it was too late the damage was already done.

And then a force fed Kinect......

I forget to add that.. "Microsoft need to give Xbox gamers another console that they REALLY want".. Most Xbox gamers are simply waiting for the release of a Xbox one console that DOESN'T include Kinect.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It always makes me laugh when individuals like yourself make bold predictions concerning the future of multi billion dollar coporations like Microsoft.. I hope you enjoy eating your words! Especially now that Microsoft have announced the releasing the Xone without Kinect.. 1) It just makes business sense for Microsoft.. And 2) As I stated before "Most Xbox gamers "like myself" have been awaiting this moment"

I don't think MS is in trouble. They've got the cash to do whatever they need to stay relevant. If the roles were reversed, and Sony was trailing in sales, I would definitely be concerned because they're in a real cash crunch right now. And everybody loses when only one console stands.

On a personal note, I played TitanFall on X1 for the first time over the weekend. I've always enjoyed COD multiplayer (even though I'm not terribly good at it), and I must say the phrase "CoD with mechs" is a more apt description of this game than "next gen game changer". Again, I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong. I especially like having some bots to shoot at so I can at least get a couple points :). But the mechs only added an element to the gameplay that CoD doesn't have. It certainly doesn't compel me to run out and buy an X1 (or get this on PC, which is what I was originally going to do).

Just my thoughts. Hate 'em if you want to.

I think ultimately you're right with MS and the deep pockets they have. But, I do wonder how long they can sustain those pockets as the XBOX Live memberships fall off to Sony. Only time will tell. And yeah, Titanfall is not a game changer as everybody seemed to be hyping it to be. I have it. Played it an hour. Now it sits as I'm grinding away on BF4 even though it's broken way beyond just Rubberbanding! Too often I feel like mailing BF4 to EA's/Dice's offices inside a bag of s***t so they get the message that maybe they need to do much better next time
