2K building new Civilization(s)

To the surprise of no one, Take-Two reveals that a new entry in Firaxis' legendary strategy series is planned.

by

In late 2006, Take-Two Interactive spent tens of millions to acquire Firaxis, developer of the Civilization series of strategy games. Given the publisher's investment and the franchise's massive popularity, it was only a matter of time before a new installment was announced.

As it turns out, the time in question was this week. Buried in yesterday's Take-Two earnings report was news that yes, a new Civilization game is planned. The report did not specify whether or not said game would be the inevitable Civilization V or a spin-off like CivCity: Rome. The prospects of a console or portable Civilization title have also been rumored.

The timing of the new product--or products--is also slightly unclear. "Starting in 2008, 2K will have new content based on its Civilization franchise and other products, including both original intellectual property and third-party titles," the company's report read. As of press time, Take-Two reps had not specified whether or not the report meant the company's 2008 fiscal year (November 1, 2007-October 31, 2008) or the 2008 calendar year. The former scenario would leave open the possibility of a new Civilization game coming as soon as this holiday season.

Is PS3 Civilization game a good effort for a console version?

Civilization is definitely a series best played on a computer. Also, the best formula they have had, by far, is where you explore the planet. Civ City... just doesn't have the mystery or discovery of exploring and discovering new nations. Colonization is just too focused. The spin offs seriously tarnish the Civilization name, in my opinion.

I hope they seriously make Civ 5 better than Civ Revolution and and better than Colinization i thought those were pants.. It seems as the francise continues they do more of the same thing but slightly better graphics, we need better content also. could be a link to the Total war series for battles, civ's amazing gaming structure, with the advisors playing an active role in politics instead of just text, could also have an personal history about your charcater how you rose to prominence within your civilization, obtaining resourse by combining like (metals to make steel) instead of just finding the steel.

If the announcement was regarding new content in 2008, that was Civilizations Revolution. Though there will be a Civ 5 eventually. There's no reason not to do it.

Could well be about Colonization, but Civ V would be cool. Hope a new one does come out soon!

Yeah, looking back, they were likely refering to Colonization or Revolution. We'll likely see a Civ V eventually anyway...

This is not a new game. This was posted in 2007. Likely this was Colonization they were talking about.

When is the official Civilization V game coming out? With that, I mean the direct successor for Civilization IV, not a non-PC iteration (Civ Rev doesn't has the stuff I like of Civ IV!). And I hope it doesn't has a great RAM memory demand increase...

This must be either Civ Revolution or Civ Colonization. Civ 4 is probably still selling well and if they're willing to attach it's license to Colonization, you gotta think the Civ 4 "brand" is still strong. Too strong to be in any hurry to replace. :p

I think it meant both Civ 4 Colonization and Civ Revolution. I bet they are making Civ 5 right now though, what's the point of buying a developer and not using them for what they are best known for.

This is Revolutions. I went to the site and it said "VIST THE OFFICIAL CIVILIZATION REVOLUTION NINTENDO DS™ SITE Check out the Official DS site for all the latest info on the portable version of Civilization Revolution. "

So it might come out this year? Doesn't look like it will. I haven't played any of these games before but they look awesome and I want to get #4, or maybe just #5 if it comes out soon.

I can agree with the comments that a new Civilization game is a bit premature, but my hope is that we will be given a product that has a different experience than our average Civ game.

The fiscal year of 2008 - oct. '08 - nov. '09 would be great - if they use the possibilities of a multicore pc double or quad core so it will not be too expensive to follow up for us mortals - imagine the enhanced graphics, animation , gameplay and multi player it will enable. Spore will come out in april 2008 - so we might expect from a brand new civilisation game to go to the moon and mars, conquer new worlds and not necessarily just alpha centaury. Maybe some natural disasters can slow things down and what about making wharp speed the ultimate goal of technological advancement. End of game...

I still play CIV 1 from 1991. I've also played Civ3, Alpha Centauri, Colonizaion, Civ2, Civ4 demo. Sequels tend to bury the original insights under addons and graphics. Yet the originals have the most intellectual take of them all, although they often are realized with modest tech. Not many programmers understand to consentrate exactly on the original consept. It is not understood nor studied carefully. The old consepts are based on a sensation of reality, illusion, that the player gets from the game. Settlers 1 aka Serf City is another example of this. The consept is brilliant if you can imagine it, yet sequels are completely ignorent of this consept, just remaking the interface with new stuff. Civ series has lost the whole picture which is to easily manage true history. It is buried under big structures and even forfeits the depth of differences of cultures. The original consept should be drawn from the original game, and do what the game tries to make players see. Everyone can see the same objective consepts in a game, and programmes should be able to work based on that, even if the original game doesn't interpret it perfectly due to techical limitasions. Drawing from Serf City of Civ1 I could make an amazing sequel, just because the consept is like that. I think "what could be done with new tech". Even one starting picture of Serf City interprets a perfect image of what Settlers should have been. I think the only way to make a sequel is to understand fully the original consept from the very perspective of that time. Do think that it is possible after all these years since 1991, especially when the makers and the company have changed?

You'd have to dumb it down a tad, but I think the DS could handle most of Civ III....

Well, the Civ IV is almost a year old, if they started working on it now, with a 2+ year development cycle, that puts a theoretical Civ V at a 2009/10 release. That's quite awhile :)

Just make another AC game. Civ 4 is as good as it could be at the moment. What is needed a sci-fi based game, IMO.

Too early for Civ V. I'm still getting the hang of Civ IV.

to me releasing a Civ 5 is still kinda early. Cvi 4 still makes money.

I got Civ 4 a year ago and never really got into it. But a few months ago I booted up the game again and took the time to get over the learning curve and... sure enough, the game is awesome. But I don't want a Civ 5 yet because I've just barely scratched the surface of 4.
