What we heard: Last month, a flurry of retailer listings out of Europe spoiled the surprise of the PlayStation 3 Slim unveiling at GamesCom. Now, new reports from the EU are bolstering speculation that Sony may be readying a 250GB version of the currently 120GB console. A May filing with the Federal Communications Commission showed that Sony tested both a 120GB (model #CECH-2001A) and a 250GB (model #CECH-2001B) version of the console under the cover of a dummy corporation, Sand Dollar Enterprise.

Today, UK-based Eurogamer and its Spanish sister site cited unnamed sources as saying the 250GB PS3 could launch as early as next month across the Atlantic. Both reports say the console will be offered as part of limited edition bundles, much like the still-available (and now just $349) 160GB Uncharted: Among Thieves bundle. In the UK, the super-sized console is pegged as coming with either Assassin's Creed II, Gran Turismo 5, or Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for £299.99 ($495, €340). In Spain, Eurogamer's sources claim the console will be bundled with FIFA 10 for €350 ($509, £307). Currently, the 120GB PS3 sells for £249.99 and €299.99 in Europe, and $299.99 in the US. There are no bundle deals in either territory.

The official story: Sony Computer Entertainment America reps deferred to their European colleagues, who had not responded as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Cautiously not bogus. Last month's Euro retailer reports proved reliable, and the FCC document all but proves that Sony intends to put a 250GB PS3 into production. However, the introduction of another model one month after the PS3 Slim went on sale seems a bit soon. Further suspicion is raised by the inclusion of Gran Turismo 5, which still does not have a firm launch date.

looking in to getting a PS3 soon, is it worth waiting a bit for the 250GB bundles or just get a normal slim. I understand you can use third party harddrives on the PS3, how does that all work and would it be cheaper just to do that instead?

@YunalescaFFX I agree with what your saying but quick question did you just say you make 6 figures and your below poverty level? Would that make 7 figures middle class.?

@DamacosG Why would you even need 250 GB? Xbox 360 owners dont have to install their games. dis is y u aint got a clue what ur talkin about.

@ Shmoe82 I'm a new ps3 owner. Really??? you can use external usb HDD's on the console? Can you save everything just as the normal hard drive?

I would LOVE to see this hit stores in America, although it probably won't come for another couple of years like 2012 or something.

250gb, thats pretty good; I found it easier to buy a mid memory version and buy a big external drive to attach to it (500gb). If it came with GT5 that would be awesome.

Dreading to see what they roll on the finnish price lottery... Current 120GB slim is 359 euros, so I guess 250GB model would be 459 euros. :/

PS3 phat can run Linux. PS3 slim cant.
PS3. It only does everything, but run Linux... And PS2 games... And some minor PS one games... And PSP games.. And Emulate... And Allow GameShark... And Allow PS one Controllers... And Allow PS2 Controllers... And Allow Same Gender Marriages...
As far as I know, it can run Linux, - -PS2 games can be played on the older 80gb model and the 60gb model, yet most people (over 140million) have bought a PS2. - -Some "minor" PS1 games - So far every PS1 game that I've tried has worked. PSP games - Yeah, those don't work. - -The controllers -> You can use an adapter to get them work, infact you can even play Resistance FoM with a keyboard & mouse. (At least one dude did it on YouTube.) The rest of what you said were not worth to respond to, if this was worth to respond to at all.

unless microsoft can convince sony and the other 8 members or the blu-ray association then blu-ray won't be coming to x360 any time soon. The only way we will see blu-ray in a microsoft product will be in the next gen

i think its a waste of money and that sony is just desperate! i bought a 200gig hard drive for 40 bux at frys electronics so i think a 500 would be next if it fills fast but sony shouldnt be going to fast with this slim line product i mean if it was something for the 360 i would so get it, specially if it comes with wifi and a bluray player built in!and to all the retards down there who say its not backwards compatible well if you really knew the slim is backwards compatible you have to download the software from the playstation store it only takes up 6680 kb so its not that big but you should have lookd in to that b4 you comment about this system! i mean i am not a big ps3 fan i love my xbox 360 more than this but hey gran turismo is a game with beautiful graphics and really good gameplay.

@YunalescaFFX First sorry about the not working comment, normally I keep coming across pre-teens who have no idea. But that aside I still have to disagree. I only get 7 grand a year at best atm and I to have a lot of other commitments putting strain on my finances but game consoles (although I love my games) come fairly low down in my list of priorities as they do with many people I know who would like a ps3 so my point still stands, the ps3 would be much better value for money if it were backwards compatible. And I am not especially comfy with credit cards I'm afraid. So its just going to be the ps2 for me :) still a great console and cheaper to

Hang on £250 for a slim & £40 for a game is £290 right? And it's £299 for the bundle! hear's me thinking a bundle would be cheeper. Woops bigger hard drive £9 for an extra 130gig disk space worth it. Makes me wonder how they can charge £32 upwards for a 16gig USB stick.

Mystearical

Actually penpusher - I'm a female adult who studies, works, works out, plays games and watches a ton of movies! I'm about to graduate this May and make six figures... so it really pisses me of when people complain about money/work/games/fun combination. A PS2 is only 100 bucks - that's like what? 2 week's worth of working at min-wage? Or 3 days of my current salary since I've been working for a while and upgrading... so yeah I DO work! And if I work - and there's absolutely nothing special or talented about me... then I know others can EASILY! And what's the point of buying a console with 33-68% failure rate? The price tag for that failure rate is expensive in my opinion. Dun get me wrong I still don't own a PS3 yet and I still get a 360 when the failure rate comes close to the PS3... and if you're a working person then you can easily apply for a credit card (which gives you money back on your first purchase) or even open up a bank account with chase for direct deposit of your check (they give you 120 bucks for that only - just direct deposit... ooooh there comes your PS2) I believe in spending money on things that are worth it - and the PS2 is DEFINITELY worth it... I have two of them and almost 100 games (and no I'm not rich I just follow ebay closely - as a matter of fact our family's income is below poverty level) - if I sound shallow so be it... I want to enjoy my life since I only live once (at least with the "current me"). I believe in having fun and hard work.

@YunalescaFFX Speaking as the owner of an xbox360 that is currently playing the disc copy of the xbox version of san andreas I think youre mistaken. The 360 does infact have backwards compatability in that it can play a large selection of xbox games although admitidly updates to support more are no longer being applied. And I might add in responce to "absolutely no other console does" the WII can also play gamecube games and the DS lite can play GBA games. If youre going to respond to a comment at least be bothered to check what youre talking about. And as for "go and buy a ps2 if you want ps2 games" I just happen to want a ps3 as well but some of us do not have the money to shell out for both thus my point that I will still not be bothering with the ps3 because I dont have the money and thus backwards compatability would make it more of a tempting purchase just as the 360's backward compatability makes it more value for money. I mean lets face it one console that can play both is cheaper than two seperate consoles. I'm going to assume you either dont work or youre living with your parents otherwise you would appreciate that fact.

Mystearical
Mystearical

@penpusher WHY???? The 360 does NOT have backwards compatibility... so why should the PS3??? People cry and cry about backward compatibility when absolutely no other console has it... so why only the PS3? If you like a PS2 then just buy one like anyone would if they wanted to play games on their original X-Box

penpusher
penpusher

250gigs hmm still wont make me buy it, the only way they would get me to buy it is if sony reinstates backwards compatability.

People don't go selling your current PS3 console just for the hard drive space. When you can just purchase a 500GB or more hard drive for less. And more space! But you're helping SONY out and getting a brand new slim ^^

@GameHog9 Sony discontinued the other bundles for a reason: Production Costs. And they were right to do that. Production costs for discontinued bundles were well over $800. So sony was actually being generous for selling PS3's for $600, since they were loosing over $200 per console!

"20 GB 40 GB 60 GB 80 GB 120 GB 160 GB 250 GB More SKU's pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease. Seriously...." _______________ You do realize that as of right now the only one made is the 120GB? Why are you complaining about the other models tht have been discontinued?!?!

taliff
taliff

@Maxblaze The 120GB means thats the size of the Hard drive itself, not the amount of free space on it. When the operating system is installed it knocks a chunk of free space out. Also there is a bit of rounding done on the actual size of the drive. I just added a second 1TB drive to my desktop and it actually has only 932GB of space. Always expect a +/-5% on drive space.

MaxBlaze

A day after I bought the 120 GB I installed Batman Arkham Asylum and that put me at 90GB. I don't know why...250GB sounds necessary to me. Just buy one off newegg though.

@ taliff After you back up your game saves, you swap out the old hard drive for the new one and format it. Then you copy your game saves from the external hard drive to the new one you just put in the ps3. It's very simple. You can look it up online for tips on how to do it. Just make sure you have the right size screwdriver (to avoid stripping the screws). Trust me, a 500GB laptop hard drive for you ps3 is inexpensive (if you know where to look and I recommend newegg.com). You'll thank yourself later for doing it.

That would be a bit too much space for me since I have all my media stored in one location at home (NAS). I'm going to speculate that it's the Uncharted or FIFA bundle. It doesn't make any sense to me for Sony to "surprise" everyone with the GT5 bundle announcement.

@wingman1977 That does sound alot easier. The reason I use my external is because I already had it and didn't feel like spending the extra cash. I would have suggested just getting a replacement internal but I figured that you had to have it formated to the PS3 software.

I say why bother! You probably get robbed for the extra disk space! I say buy a 80gb at a cheaper price! Upgrade the hard drive to 500GB by purchasing a 2.5 inch hd and install Yellow Dog Linux (Which won't affect your warranty). For instuctions look on You Tube .
