2 million iPads sold in under 60 days

Apple reaches double-platinum milestone for tablet device as 5,000 custom-built apps now available.

Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads since the device debuted April 3, the company said Monday.

It's safe to assume that the vast majority of those sales came from the US market, as the iPad went on sale less than four days ago in Australia, Japan, Canada, the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Apple didn't say how many of the 2 million iPads were sold internationally.

iPad sales now number in the multimillions.

Speculation that Apple is having a hard time keeping up with demand for the iPad seems to have been confirmed by Apple CEO Steve Jobs in the sales figure announcement.

"We appreciate [customers'] patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone," Jobs said in the announcement.

Apple said that 5,000 applications built specifically for the iPad are now available in the App Store. In all, Apple has more than 200,000 apps in the store that are compatible with the iPad.

It took Apple 28 days to sell its first million iPads and about the same amount of time to sell its second million.

The company also noted that the iPad will be available in nine more countries in July, though it didn't specify which ones.

@SuperYeti22... Way to dig up an old news story! We get it... you don't like the iPad, the people who make them or the people who are buying them. You can stop now.

@jshaas "The people that keep screaming that the iPad is just an oversized iPod Touch have obviously not used one. The iPad is basically a Kindle, iPod, and MacBook all wrapped in one device. True an actual laptop is going to be more customizable, and have more functions where a computer is concerned... but the iPad is made to replace anyone's computer. You can run full programs on it, not just "Apps." It's perfect for anyone that is on the go all the time but doesn't really need a full-fledged laptop." An oversized iTouch 64GB 3G that doesn't even have half the functionallity of a netbook(And uses apps, NOT real programs), and you would pay $800(over 2x the price of a netbook) for that?

i went to best buy to check out this bad boy. It turns out that it's almost the same thing as an iphone/ipod touch, but six times bigger.

For the asking price of this thing, it's not worth putting up all that hard earned money for this gimmicky little thing and it dosen't even have enough support for a flash player, Steve Jobs and the rest of Apple are nothing more than a 2-bit bunch of rip-off technological a**holes.

I didn't know THAT many people smoke pot. If I take a s**t and call it iS**t, and sell it for $500, I'd sell millions

2 millions ripoffs. In my opinion this is product that shouldn't be priced higher than $200.This is not a portable gaming system replacement like some are saying. DIfficult arkward to hold for extended peirod playing games, only one button. need to spend more money on downloads and the games for it are more like microgames than full games. Apple sure knows how to make bussiness and brainwash people with ads, changes of colors in their products and lunching upgrades of the same thing twice a year.

Why people continue to buy this garbage, I'll never understand. Poor battery life, poor hard drive space, no Flash capability...really, people? I should create something with an i in front of it. I'll probably make millions even if it sucks.

The only problem with iPad is that it is a good target by thieves, pricey and big!

Who has $500 to spend on half a laptop? Must have been the same 2 million people who spent $15 on the MW2 map pack... as long as it's a 'trusted' 'name brand' it can be sold for any pirce right? really? I see why we're in a recession now...

I'm waiting for the 5th version of the IPad to be made and then I'll consider getting one. Right now it sucks. Not even worth the money considering you can get a Laptop for the same price and it can do everything that IPad can do, plus more. The IPad can't even run a simple Flash program.

Still does not help M$ as its Mobil is sinking and as less people buy PCs less people use Windows =^). Android, Apple, Sony all are beating M$ like a pinata.

You guys are bashing the iPad, but I suspect that it's target audience is not your demographic. I think this is more for adults, older people, business related, etc. I have several friends and family members in their 30-40's that are quite looking forward to it. As for me, I don't want one, but I'm not it's target customer.

@tyco_ex... Sure it's a little pricey compared to other portable devices. But, it's an Apple... you get what you pay for! @izmickey... People compare the iPad to an e-reader because Apple has marketed it as such. Have you seen the commercial? What exactly is a tablet supposed to do? Companies make products that their consumers want, plain and simple. Apparently, Apple was right again for it's consumers... 2+ million to be exact.

The newest apple product, behold: iCrap! Its a giant piece of crap thats sleeker and half (if not less) the functionality than a regular piece of crap, and its a great, revolutionary product for morons who don't have a clue how to spend $800

The iPad has nothing going for it other then it was first on the market. It is an ipod with a 3 inch screen, running the same useless operating system with a slow 1 ghz processor. As soon as other tablets come out they will reduce the under clock on their cpu, add a usb port, increase the storage by a few GBs and increase the price calling it new. Making all the other people think that their current iPad is outdated and they NEED the new one. I'm looking forward to all the other tablets and actually running a descent operating system on it where I can run a program like Photoshop and not pay $10 for some half ass paint-like app on the iPad with the name Photoshop slapped onto it just to be able to edit a few images.

To quote the mighty Maddox, "I don't know why Mac users get so defensive when you call them idiots. I mean, Apple is a company that has built its entire user base around the fact that its users can't do simple things like turn their computers on."

Still waiting for the windows7/adroid tablets! I'm hoping when they come out and I get one, I'd sit next to an Ipad owner and make them realize how much they're missing. Weird though, I've yet to spot one in the wild and I live in a college campus.

Apple has already killed PSP...the DS is next! And those 2 million "idiots" as you called them are still part of a huge installed base. Soon you wont have a choice but game on the go on I-devices. Steve Jobs called it, predicted it and so far it looks like he's right on the money, in more ways than one. :)

@ jshaas The iPad is NOT even close to a kindle or nook. Why makes you think you can compare the iPad to an e-reader? Just because it can display an e-book? My desktop and laptop can do that. When will people stop comparing the iPad to a laptop or an e-reader? The iPad can barley do what a tablet is supposed to be able to do.

Kajiuro

@snipeshot11 Just because a mass of people buy it, doesn't mean it's a good product. You can easily get a netbook for $200 less, with more capabilities, uses and so on and so forth. As OJdaLIONKing said, get off the Apple crack.

I've tried to get into the iPad thing, but i just can't--I have a comparably sized laptop that can do about everything the iPad can do and more (it's a tablet notepad). As a bonus, it has a keyboard for when I don't want to struggle to use the onscreen one. Developers, please stop smoking the Apple crack, this thing isn't good for quality games, only those shovelware free/shareware games that the Iphone has.

snipeshot11

That should put the haters to rest, likely not though...I personally have no use for an Ipad but I'm sick of hearing people rag on it. 2 million people can't be wrong, so get over it already.

calvinsora
calvinsora

I hope people all realize, though, that these sales are not spurred on by the power of Apple's gaming opportunities. Alas, developers flock to the iPad in hopes of making more moolah while sacrificing quality. I have access to an iPad, and it's an interesting tech, but my laptop is only slightly bigger and can do much more. So... who's the winner here?

Mmm... its just a shame developers go straight to Apple products because they are popular. But why pay so much for a product that is forced to be set one way/have only Apple approved software on it? However, I do really like the touch screen. I don't like Apple, for the Ipod sound quality (they could have really improved on this), and how popular it is, even though its as much of an audiophiles device as a bar of soap BUT (do not neg rep me for that, as its my opinion) I do think it'll be successful in the art market/music market. I can see it very much being used as a digital canvas if Photo shop became available, and the same for any music software. Having a keyboard/sound control device in your hand and accessible, I see as a big plus.

I bought an Apple TV on Day one and it is the most beautiful ornament in my living room center console... It has not had a plugged cable for over 3 yrs. But the glossy white makes a great addition to the room.

@afrojitsu the u of m is a mac school, almost every computer lab has macs in it on campus. every college in memphis has macs, and if you are a journalist, or someone in production, if you have no clue how to use a mac, you are possibly out of a job bc of all the time it takes to teach someone to edit with a mac. so that was a pretty bunk statement. i can use a mac and 2 minutes later switch over to my netbook. so... you should take that back, or learn something. sorry to drop the knowledge...

@ jshaas : You can say it isn't meant to replace a computer all you want, but the price begs to differ.
