1942, Ghosts 'n Goblins, more heading to Virtual Console

Capcom rereleasing six arcade classics that also include Sonson, Black Tiger, Exed Exes, and Commando through Wii's retro game channel this winter.

In 2008, Capcom went through a phase of revisiting a number of its arcade classics for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Counted among these releases was Super Street Fighter II Championship Edition, Commando 3, 1942: Joint Strike, and Bionic Commando. Today, Capcom announced that it will again be reviving a host of retro arcade titles, but this time, they will be coming to the Wii.

Beginning this winter, Capcom will rerelease six of its more prominent arcade classics through the Wii's Virtual Console in the US and Europe: Sonson, 1942, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Black Tiger, Exed Exes, and Commando: Wolf of the Battlefield. Capcom did not say when, in what order, or at what price these titles will be available.

Arthur returns in Ghosts 'n Goblins for the Wii.

First released in 1984, Sonson is a side-scrolling action platformer that follows the pursuits of the Monkey King. 1942 also saw release in 1984 and sees gamers hopping into the cockpit of a World War II-era biplane in vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up action.

Moving to 1985, Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins is a notoriously difficult action platformer that sees Arthur vanquishing the undead in an effort to save his beloved princess. As for vertically scrolling shoot-'em-ups, Exed Exes sees players navigating a hostile honeycomb, having taken on the aspect of a sci-fi insectoid. On the flip side, Commando presents a modern-day tale, in which a lone wolf operator shoots his way through enemy territory.

Lastly, Black Tiger is a 1987 throwback and sees players assuming the role of a barbarian on a warpath, hacking his way through legions of enemies and conquering powerful warlord bosses.

I'm actually playing Black Tiger on the PSP Capcom Collection Remix. It's awesome. Castlevania, Legendary Axe and Rastan all in one! Great game. buy it.

Absolutely loved Ghosts N Goblins - I really need to take advantage of Wii shop more...nostalgia bug. Broken controllers and tv cabinets!

@fanboy_killa YES. Double Dragon 2; The Revenge is easily, EASILY one of my favorite beat em' ups from that era. I would kill for a port, remake, or HD update and release of that game.

Sweet. Black Tiger. Castlevania rip-off, but I played the heck out of that game...now I'll finally be able to finish it.

They need to bring Ghouls N Ghosts to the 360/PS3 and give it a HD upgrade! I still play that one on my Genesis occasionally. It makes you realize how spoiled we are now, with game saves and all. I made it to the third level on my last life, but that's as far as I can get. Die, start all over from the beginning. That's when you used to have to memorize the enemies routines just to make it through certain levels! Good times!

I know these were relesaed in various Capcom collections on PSP and PS2, maybe even Xbox. You might even find Gamecube versions of these much cheaper than their VC counterparts.

Ahh yes, I remember whenever I play this game. Due to Ghosts 'n Goblins ridiculous difficulty, frustration will overwhelm me to the point where I almost throw my SNES controller to the television screen. Damn this game was fun, but it sure as hell was hard.

Ah yes, the game that raped my childhood, Super ghouls and Goblins for SNES raped my childhood, how wonderful that i get to re-experience the pain but from the original perspective

@KillerJuan77 and @Richardthe3rd I actually disagree, I didn't think it was that hard until the very end of the game (I still haven't beaten it.) Mind you, I did play for four or five hours straight to get there the first time, so I guess it's hard but I made it past all of it my second time in a considerable less time. So I guess it's like Ninja Gaiden, hard the first time but a lot easier after that. But in today's standards, who really wants to play a very hard game that takes you four or five hours in the first sitting, I bet it would take me quite awhile if I tried to go back now.

I played most of these when I had the two Capcom collections on PS2, Only in those collections....the first one I think had Trojan possibly the most insanely difficult game ever made for an old school system or arcade machine.

@Richardthe3rd I completely agree with you, it's so hard that it's not even fun to play -_-

@Mowens9512 I recommend you should get a Wii, if not for some of the great Wii titles, then do it for all the old school titles for NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Master System, Turbo Grafx, Neo Geo Arcade, etc... It is well worth owning.

Call me old or retro, I think it's about time someone to finally put Ghost'n"Goblins back out! Also loved 1942 as well. The downside of it all though is that I don't own a Wii LOL Wii's virtual console seems to get the lion's share of old school games, but makes sense since most of those classics were NES or SNES games.
