1 million play Diablo III every day

Former game director Jay Wilson also reveals dungeon crawler draws 3 million unique players per month; Auction House a problem Blizzard is working on.

by

Diablo III logs around 1 million unique players per day, former game director Jay Wilson revealed today during a Game Developers Conference panel titled "Shout at the Devil: The Making of Diablo III."

Wilson also noted that over 3 million unique gamers play Diablo III every month. After spending six years on Diablo III, Wilson announced in January that he is transferring to a new team within Blizzard Entertainment.

As of December 31, Diablo III has sold in (that is, shipped) 12 million copies.

The Diablo III player base is likely to grow in the time ahead, as the dungeon crawler is headed to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 with offline play and four-player split-screen support.

Also during his talk today, Wilson admitted that Diablo III's auction houses--both real-money and in-game--have negatively impacted the game. Though 50 percent of all players make use of the auction houses, Wilson explained that making real-world money has become more of a motivating factor for players than killing Diablo. He said the team at Blizzard is working to remedy the situation, though nothing specific was mentioned.

We are so proud to announce that from 13 million owners , only 1 million playing ( we mean spending most of their time on Auction House or chatting ) ...

Youre proud mr failer Jay Wilson ? All i have to say to you is FaT ThaT LoSeR ... like you once said.  You clearly destroyed Diablo 3 in less than 5 months and it took you only 8 years to understand that you took to many BAD DECISIONS ? FAILER... im out.

I remember waiting 5+ years, only to hear PvP would be added later after release ( how is that going by the way?)...

any time there is real money involved. things can get ugly.  i played through the game last year and they still have not gotten it fixed? and the game really sucks,  torchlight and path of exile are way more fun to play.

And the makers of Mountain Dew and Cheetos thank Blizzard for it every day....

This game promotes infinite grinding, got bored of it the second play-through. Not only that but having realised you don't really get the best gear until you traverse up the difficulty spectrum and get onto your third or fourth play-through. The story left a lot to be desired and for a game in production for such a vast period of time it sure was a short game. Not surprised there's 1 million suckers out there though... I'll stick to Blizzards' StarCraft.

Diablo 3 was fun up until my 5th replay of the Acts. Now i can't force my self to get just one more level before i get bored and quit. I played it for the story such as it was.

Basically, every gamer with a brain realized this before it was released, so yeah, you're a dumbass, Wilson...

Making that RMAH was a mistake, the worst of all though was fixing the drop rates of items in such a way only useless things would drop for your character to force you use it, of course pissing off your player base in the process, way to make money blizz.

Blizzard figured out a formula for making games that sell well. They make games that are easy to figure out and easy to play. "Hardcore" gamers complain. Blizzard cashes a FAT check and doesn't care. The people who enjoy the games, great. If you don't like them, don't buy them. The real friends ID thing they have(not sure what the actual name is) allows you to play multiple Blizzard games and still see what friends are on and chat. I'd imagine that a lot of the Diablo III players are WoW players who hop on D3 with some friends. Since WoW has so many players and Blizzard gave away D3 for signing up for a year of WoW, it makes sense. I'd like to know how many of that 1 million actually bought the game versus a free copy.

My family got me WoW and the full complement of expansions (including MoP) when I called to move all my Blizzard products onto one e-mail address/account my D3 free starter edition was changed to a full standard edition. I played it long enough to get a monk through all the difficulties. The game bored me so much that I actually called Blizzard and told them what had happened so they would fix it. Of course, I was also calling to cancel the WoW subscription as well. Both were boring grind-fests. Hours of walking. Hours of "go here. Then return to me. Go there. Kill this. Return. Find these. Return. Go talk to another guy to repeat this process." Yeah... real fun... Blizzard has become garbage. Even StarCraft 2 was blah.

He says this. But I want to see the actual numbers month by month. Without data to examine he is just blowing smoke up our backsides.

Most gamers are so hard to please these days.  I'll keep playing the games that I love like Diablo III and Mass Effect 3.  You haters keep complaining and whining and go back to your 10,000th match of COD.

Diablo III Patch 1.0.7 – v.1.0.7.14633

pvp has been added in PATCH FEATURES

New Feature: Brawling

For those who wish to test their mettle against fellow Nephalem, your time has come. Players will now be able to battle one another in a new zone designed specifically for this style of combat called "The Scorched Chapel." This zone can be accessed by speaking with Nek the Brawler in any of the four Act hubs, and supports 2 to 4 players in a Free-For-All format.

@Richardthe3rd   I don't have a good argument as to why Diablo 3 is not good. But I'll tell you this: I find myself reinstalling Diablo 2 every year and replaying it. It's just as fun as it was when I played it the first time so nostalgia is not a factor.

I played through Diablo 3 once, uninstalled it and never want to play it again. It's still same old hack'n'slash action but it just doesn't have the same appeal as Diablo 2.

@riccardo90 Whover, if the remake were made with the new D3 formula, I would spit on it just like I did to D3

grnsuperman4

@Dante0611 I think Blizzard was trying to get some money from items sold on their games instead of a 3rd party. MMO's are plagued with gold and item farmers that sell both on websites. I know D3 wasn't a MMO. But, D2 had a brisk market of sites selling items and gold for the game. Not saying I agree, but both ways present their own problems. Personally I wouldn't expect any game to give me legendary loot very often. At least with RMAH any player can make a little. But, from my understanding when you play D3 you don't have to worry about gold farmers like an MMO. Someone else playing can't steal your kills. So the RMAH would make more sense on a full MMO. The Old Republic has something similar I hear, but there isn't a way for players to sell stuff for money, you can just buy stuff from TOR. I think we will continue to see different attempts at finding a way to cut out the 3rd party farmers and still retain in game auctions until someone finds the right fit. If that ever happens that is.

@commander1122 They game away D3 for free to WoW players that signed up for a year of WoW. How many of that million PAID for the game?

@Buck_Swaggler They gave Diablo III to World of Warcraft players for free for signing up for a year of WoW before D3 came out. How many players do you think got it for free?

@Senor_Kami You cant been so silly as believe something at face value with not relevant data points to examine? If this was true they would have been plastering everywhere with the log in numbers and hours played etc. Good money says he is lying. But what do you expect from a guy that made such a bad game.

@Bradjune80 It's not that unbelievable. How hard is it to get a lot of players if you give a game away for FREE for signing up for a year subscription to a game they already play? World of Warcraft had a lot of players when they offered Diablo III for free for signing up.
