1 million gamers get Acclaim-ed

Free-to-play-MMOG publisher rings up 1 millionth user in just over a year under the Acclaim Games name.

by

If there's one thing that attracts attention, it's the promise of something free. If anyone needed more proof of that notion, they only need to hear the latest news out of Acclaim Games.

The publisher, which produces free-to-play massively multiplayer online games such as BOTS and 2Moons, recently logged its 1 millionth registered user. Currently, Acclaim uses in-game advertising and microtransactions to fund its games.

The Acclaim name was resurrected in late 2005 when former Activision executive Howard Marks secured the rights for a reported $100,000.

Acclaim's chief creative officer is David Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment, who recently revealed the upcoming user-generated Top Secret!. For more on Perry and Top Secret!, read GameSpot's Q&A or watch a video interview conducted during GDC 2007.

2Moons is really really fun. It's not as deep or complex as WoW nor does it work as well but it's just good fun. Also has really fast and visceral combat as well as a good quest structure which shows each leg of the quest as you complete them. Would highly recommend downloading this for FREE now.

Free MMOs, you say? Are they worth checking out?

That's what happened to Dave Perry... I miss that guy. Ever since he took on The Matrix, he slowly dwindled from public view. I liked the way he did things. The Matrix was the wrong IP for him... um, I'm rambling, sorry. Miss'ya Dave!

Yeah, I can see how some might agree about the Acclaim name. But for those of us older than 14, we might see things differently.

This game keeps getting better and better. It kinda sucked at first, being real bugy and all, but that have done really good keeping up with the patches and all. With the updates to the coding and the increasing depth to the game, I hands down would reather pay a monthly to this rather than City or Heros or World of War Craft. Keep it up and I may have to rethink moving over to LOTR online. Hands down the Best MMO I have played yet.

runstalker and comthitnuong: I agree totally. I have done just that in the past. Sign-up, log-in, play once, forget-it-ever-existed. But you must remember you get what you pay for. T.A.N.S.T.A.A.F.L. also known as "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch."

I agree with runstalker. People can make an account really easily, play it once and then not touch it again.

Big whoop. It's so easy for random surfers to register a freebie account and go nowhere with it. I'm not sure how many lifers actually get sucked into micro-transactions for titles that are little more than glorified mini-games with stripped-down MMO stat systems that focus on repetitive grind. Stuff like BOTS or Shot Online, or Freestyle B-ball, or the dozen half-backside fantasy MMOs with ancient 3D engines (ideal for lowest common denominator net cafe PCs) and atrocious localization. I don't play Bejewled at flash game sites, and I consider 90% of the free "MMO" games out there to be somewhere halfway between Bejeweled and a -real- video game. Acclaim needs to sell me on a more 'premium' game before I take the brand seriously. 1 million people registered; how many played?

lol, Acclaim. What a name to take up... I mean, yeah it's a well-known name and all, but not a particularly revered one. It's like me changing my name to Josef Stalin... I mean, yeah people recognize the name, but not for very positive reasons.

If i was to play more games online they HAVE to be free to play. But seeing as how i only play my DS and very soon my wii online, i don't think i have to worry about paying. but this free gaming philosophy is a plus.

Just think, if you'd sold your house you'd have enough money to buy the Acclaim name and still put a couple of kids through college. That's gotta hurt.

Acclaim used to be a really popular name in games. I'm glad some one picked it up... it deserves another chance.

What does HOME have to do with this (to iwishiwasrich and bildo2020...who are obviously the same person...or iwishiwasrich is a plagiariser)?

The only thing I have to say is...HOME is going to be stupid. I dont understand why everyone feels the need to go and have an "online avatar" and give it a digital life which runs parallel to its creators. Get real people, play real games and dont give into this PURLY commercial move by sony. HOME has nothing to do with the art of videogames, it has everything to do with making money from microtransactions and advertising while further diluting the artistry that is the Videogame. If you want to play a game that is controled by ads go for it, you are all tools. home is more like an mmorpg and mmorpgs are popular because they are an easy way to conect to people like it your can leave the house your can conect online and talk to people. it an easy way to conect like myspace. it like try to say dont talk on myspace talk over the phone. it just myspace is more fun then calling some1 and home is more fun then playing a normal game.

"The Acclaim name was resurrected in late 2005 when former Activision executive Howard Marks secured the rights for a reported $100,000" LOL... you can't even get a condo for that cheap. Your average college student probally could have gotten approved for a loan of that amount.

Wow jealous fanboys even in PC Ive played some of these and they are lame. Look at the screenshots for the games they are aimed a 7 year olds. You know wat an online community for of 7 year olds is like. I do because Ive played Halo 2. If Home doesnt kick the sh*t out of these games I would be amazed.
