The industry has been knee-deep in World War II-themed games in recent years. Just like the war they depict, the games' battles for retail success were fiercely fought. One of the winners that succeeded both with critics and gamers was Activision's Call of Duty for the PC.

The first-person shooter series, which saw a PC expansion and a few console spin-offs, continues with Call of Duty 2, scheduled to deploy for PCs on October 25 and the Xbox 360 later this year. For those PC gamers who can't wait to jump into the heat of battle, Activision and developer Infinity Ward today released the game's demo, which is now available on GameSpot DLX.

The 671MB demo has four levels of difficulty and explores parts of the single-player campaign. Included is the mission "The End of the Beginning," which sees a squad of allied troops taking on The Third Reich in El Daba, Egypt, in 1942.

Call of Duty 2 is rated T for Teen and is awaiting pricing details. For more information, head over to GameSpot's previous coverage.
