Army of Two: 40th Day builds on the original game, despite introducing very few innovations

The Bottom Line:
"Been there, done that"
I read a piece on the newly announced third Army of Two game that got me itching to re-play Army of Two: 40th Day again and maybe review it. The next AoT installment won't be featuring our heroes Salem and Rios, due to (according to Visceral Montreal) "needing to change the tone of the game from 'bro/dude' to a little more serious notion…". Army of Two is a one of the best coop games in the current generation. The 40th day provides us with a little obscure story, improved graphical presentation and some great cooperative action.

Story
Army of Two: 40th Day takes our heroes to China. A mysterious organization has shown up throughout the city, bringing chaos, destruction and uncertainty. Who are these people? Why are they there? Who controls them? What is "The 40th Day"? While playing the game, you would be asking all these questions and some of the answers will become clear soon (with the help of collectable radio logs, scattered throughout the game). The story or I should say the "eventual outcome" will not be groundbreaking, even though the ending of the game will surprise you. By "surprise" I mean there are three separate endings, depending on what you choose to do. 7/10

Graphics
The visual presentation of AoT: 40th Day is significantly better than the first game. The game features great scenery, the city of Shanghai is presented in a lively and believable fashion. Character models are also very good. 8.5/10rnrnSound and Voice ActingrnThe soundtrack of this title is not very unique, nor memorable. Voice acting is decent at best, but in no way bad. I guess….it wasn't very memorable neither. 7.5/10

Gameplay
Army of Two series has always been about cooperative gameplay and weapon upgrades. These are two areas where the series really excels and 40th Day is no different. Just like the first one, there are ridiculous amounts of mods for each available weapon, we have many mask templates to pick from and we can even design our own designs. Gameplay is similar to the first game, which means cooperation with your partner is a necessary ingredient for a successful outcome of the game. Everything else you might have seen in the original game as far as gameplay is still available in this installment – AGGRO included! As always, mastering the AGGRO system will make your life on the streets of Shanghai substantially easier. 8.5/10

Overall
Army of Two: 40th Day is a good game and a great cooperative experience. Even though, it does not bring many innovations to the series, it will provide you with a decent story, excellent graphics and good gameplay. For fans of the series of for those who looks for a cooperative challenge (both online and offline split-screen) AoT: 40th Day will provide just that. 7.5/10
