An average shooter that doesn't do anything really great, but also doesn't do anything horribly wrong.

User Rating: 6 | Army Men: Sarge's War XBOX
Army Men: Sarge's War is a third person shooter in which you play 'Sarge', a Sergeant in the Green toy soldier army. Early in the game, the enemy Tan army tricks the Green army into believing there will be a peace ceremony, where in reality the evil Tans obliterate the Green's town, and most of the Green army along with it, including many of Sarge's friends. Sarge then sets out with one intention, to kill Malice, the leader of the Tan army.

What I like:

I liked the graphics. They're bad overall, but there are high points, like the damage your plastic character takes when he is damaged. The gameplay isn't bad. Especially when you are picking off Tan army limbs with the sniper rifle and other weapons, of which there is a good variation of. I got a lot of fun out of decapitating tan soldiers, after which they will stay alive and fire their weapons indiscriminately, sometimes shooting their fellow tans. If you can get a bunch of them to do this at once, it can be fun to watch. You can also take over strategically placed HMG's and take down loads of enemies.

What I would change:

The game itself is very linear. Other than occasionally running to the other side of a map to flip a switch, you're basically following one line, shooting countless enemies along the way. The game gives you a taste of team combat by giving you some fellow Greens to set free from prison camps, who will then fight beside you. This is brief, because they usually get killed, and if they don't they won't follow you to the next stage anyway. The game would have been much more fun if it was less Rambo one man army style, and more like a traditional war game, even if you didn't control your fellow soldiers. A little stealth or something else thrown in the mix also would have been nice. As it is, the linear, run & gun gameplay gets repetitive fairly quickly. The game has secondary missions, which are usually finding hidden items. If you want to collect all of the medals in the game (not a requirement), you need to find everything. Problem is, there is at least one time in the game where if you miss something, you can't backtrack, requiring you to start the level over. I didn't feel like repeating the already repetitive level, so I decided to just disregard this aspect of the game.

The toy soldiers theme is a pretty cool idea for video games, unfortunately the Army Men franchise is usually mediocre at best. This game is no exception. If you're really into the Army Men games, or you love shooters, you can probably get some fun out of the game. Just don't go in expecting something spectacular.
