Toy Guns. Toy Men.

Sarge’s Heroes. This game created mixed reactions in almost every gamer back in the new millennium. Originally released for the Playstation and the N64, it wasn’t received very well because of its lackluster visuals and slow, non-responsive gameplay. Though the multiplayer offered some fun, the single player game was absolutely disastrous. Enemies would often appear out of nowhere, the fogging effects where horrible, and, if you were attacked, the response time was so slow that you couldn’t react fast enough to save yourself. Thankfully, most of this is gone in the Dreamcast version of this hilarious game

First, the graphics have been significantly boosted. Sarge moves fluently and easily across the plain as his plastic body shimmers. Though there are still minor framerate glitches, the game manages to hold out pretty well. There is fluent water motion and you can actually see the plastic flying off of the soldiers you kill. The game looks much more polished than the other versions and, as I just said, it’s much smoother than its previous releases.

The gameplay has had its little tweaks here and there, but it is basically the same. It’s faster and now, though it isn’t as fast as some games, the buttons actually respond when you hit them. Though it can be frustrating at times, it’s pretty satisfying to destroy as many little tan guys as possible. I was amused.

The sound for this game is actually pretty impressive. The score is wonderful and it can really get you going. The creators really chose a nice soundtrack for this game, I was very pleased at what I found and I recommend it for those who pay attention to such things.

But the saving grace of this game is its multiplayer. Me, my brothers, and several of my buddies spent hours on the weekend blasting away at each other in the plastic world. It’s so much fun, and it’s addictive as well. If you decimate your opponents to nothing and win the match you feel unstoppable and if you lose you all the more want thirsty revenge against the victor. So you play again and again and again, and again until you’re running around with plastic guns chasing little sheep. It’s a hoot and it’s a great thing to do on a late Saturday night with a few buddies who are sick of Halo 2. I highly recommend it.

Overall, Sarge’s Heroes is a fun game. The graphics are pretty good, the gameplay is average and the single player can be tedious at times but it is fun if you give it a chance, but the multiplayer is a lot of fun and it solely carries this game on its shoulders. So if you’re bored on a weekend and you have a Dreamcast, some controllers, caffeine gum, and a few friends who are into the older kinds games; give this game a shot.
