Only for those who live to play Army Men

User Rating: 4 | Army Men Advance GBA
The now defunct 3DO is well known for only cranking Army Men games out of every sweat pore of their corporation. Apparently they also decided, “Hey, let’s make a GBA game for the fans because they have no lives!” Unfortunately, fans of this franchise likely have little knowledge of what makes good games, because I played Playstation games better than this one.

Okay, where to begin? The story is the same as any other Army Men game where General Plastro has returned and is now using a new type of technology in his ever-lasting attempts to destroy the Green Army. This time however, he now uses the help of aliens from outer space, but there is really no development on it whatsoever unless you pay continuous attention to the objectives you are given.

What’s the game play like? Extremely simplistic and changes too mildly hard at some points. You just go through twelve levels of running around shooting tan soldiers and solving puzzles. It’s at these parts where the game starts to build up to “mildly hard” and they can be solved with trial and error if you want to risk some lives or go back to the game all over again if you lost your password. There are some parts where you control a vehicle though I hope you don’t think that controlling a ship and a tank will be different, because they really aren’t. You can play as Sarge or Vicki and there are some missions where you get to play as a different soldier. The points where you play as a different soldier is a breath of fresh air since you will be playing as these guys throughout the whole game and it makes no difference who you pick.

The graphics just barely hit the GBA mark, but they really don’t look all that eye-pleasing. The army men look like fat people and they run very slowly as well. The rest of them are about as cartoony as the backgrounds and there are no graphics that make the game even worth seeing.

The sound… Where can I begin with the sound? Well there is no music in the gameplay and you only hear about two tunes in the whole game, in the intro and the menu. The rest of the sounds are weak at best and the attempts at sounding like the army men are actually hurt aren’t any better.

Is this worth playing? Army Men fans should only play this. Everyone else, don’t bother with it unless you for some odd reason feel you must in order to see what you’re missing.
