It's an ugly planet. A bug planet.

If Armorines has an up side it’s that it pays a bit of an homage to the movie, “Star Ship Troopers” which was one neat, action packed slaughter fest. I’d say the similarities between Star Ship Troopers and Armorines are that you shoot bugs in both--and there the similarities end. All you’re doing is shooting at bugs with a ray gun instead of a conventional automatic rifle. In fact, had the game used machine guns (like in Troopers—smart move, Van Hoven) it would have been much cooler.

There’s also an aspect of the game that just doesn’t make any sense and that is, unlike Star Ship Troopers, there was no point of setting this game in the future.
I don’t know why the game has the player clad in some futuristic armor that does little to protect them from bugs. You don’t need a fancy schmancy techno space suit to see in the dark, spot objects from afar or deflect sharp blows—a decent flashlight, pair of binoculars and a flack jacket will take care of most of that. There just aren’t enough clear differences to warrant staging this game several decades down the road. For instance, in Troopers our heroes must travel to another planet to engage the bugs. That would require light speed and suggest that these people are decades (if not centuries) past us to have figured it out. In Armorines it all happens on earth so there’s no need for inter-stellar travel. Is there a relevant difference in the society in which they live that would require placing the story in the future? In Troopers everyone lived under a global fascist state which suggested that possibly a century or more has passed from present day to create such a world. In Armorines, as far as can be seen, it’s good ‘ol late 20th century U.S.A. with a special marine task force designed to deal with hostile aliens—heck, we might even have one of those already. I’m afraid the game is just boring and even a little disappointing since I thought it would have been closer to the movie. Not a bad action/shoot ‘um up but definitely nothing special and I felt no compulsion to reach beyond just the few earlier levels. Not to mention the entirely irrelevant sci-fi “in the future” aspect.

They should have just ponied up the dough for licensing and went all out for an official Star Ship Troopers game. Armorines is a cheap, un-thought out half-assed effort.
