Armorines: Project Swarm For N64.

Armorines is a sci-fi first-person shooter than can be played cooperatively. We've definitely seen this story before, way too many times. There is definitely a Starship Troopers influence here, which Acclaim notes in its strategy guide for this game. You are one of two (or two of two, if played cooperatively) marines given a new type of battle armor and sent to wipe out an alien invasion on earth and on their spaceship. The story is moved along through briefings, news reports, and is given Acclaim's larger than life feel through a few cutscenes. Gameplay : It has never been funner to blast bug-like aliens to gooey smithereens (even the much overrated Halo can't compare on that note). The enemies move so fast and across so many surfaces (up walls, on the ceiling, in the air) that it provides some tense and even scary moments in the game. Objectives hurt the game in that they can be vague and hard to understand. In one world you have to set bombs and then find cover, but the briefing never tells you where that cover is. It can also be hard to pick up very small objects on the ground. The radar makes these two faults more bearable, since it works perfectly well. Also, the worlds can be very long at times, and you may have to backtrack through all of one to find a single bug nest you missed. The weapons can be upgraded, and provide a ton of fun. Some worlds let you fire form computer controlled vehicles and provide a nice change of pace. The Controls are where the game hurts. It is very hard to change weapons while moving and hard to hit enemies without auto aim. The camera can become erratic while moving along rocky surfaces, so much so that the auto-aim does not work. Graphics : This game uses the Turok 2 engine, which is one of the nicest-looking on the N64. The energy effects are spectacular, as are explosions. The cutscenes are very pretty, and the cutscene that plays when you die is one of the nicest we've ever seen. Animations look great as the aliens climb, fly, and run at frightening speeds. The weapons provide lots of eye candy. The game does suffer from being far too dark in some spots. Sound : The bugs and weapons sound fantastic, as do screams from humans being carried off by aliens. The music is one of the five best scores on the N64 and is worth searching online for a soundtrack. What doesn't sound good is when the music messes up. Sounds tend to get really fuzzy on TV's where you must hook up your recptor to the back to play. The multiplayer is horrid. Don't even try it. The cooperative on the other hand is very nice. Once you beat the game, that really all there is to do besides beat it on hard (or look at the gallery if you have the Playstation version).
