A chess-style board game that merges action and strategy most effectively.

User Rating: 8 | Archon NES
Ah yes, Archon. There have been many ports of Archon to various computers and consoles, and that is a very good thing.

You may play 1-player or 2-player, controlling the forces of either light or dark. Playing with another human will give you the greatest gameplay out of the game, raising the score to 9. Playing against a computer player, however, becomes quite predictable while still fun, lowering the score to 7.

On each side, you move your units of varying strengths and powers around the "chessboard" onto squares of light and dark. These squares empower those of their kind. A light unit standing on a light square gains increased power, while a dark unit would lose power, and vice versa. When two units come into contact with each other, they enter combat.

In combat, this is where the action comes in. You are transported into an arena screen where you will actually fight the enemy unit to the death. The winner 's unit takes control of the square and the loser's unit is removed from the board.

The "king" pieces in the game are actually wizards, and can cast spells to affect the gameplay, including heal, shift time, revive, teleport, imprison, and exchange. The game may be won in 1 of 2 ways, either by controlling all 5 "power points" on the board, or by eradiaticating the other side.

Visuals and sound quality are on par for the NES; there's nothing spectacular here. Just a fun filled game with lots of action and strategy.
