History of the Hylian Knights

By Thunder, it's been a long time! Like, two years since I last posted here.

So, I was going through old files on my computer (as I am apt to do every now and then) and I came across a saved file of one of the old "The Hylian Knight FAQ" topics I used to post. Behold, the fabled history of the Hylian Knights!

History

The Knights began during the 2002 Summer Contest. Their initial purpose was to aid Link in the flame wars, and create a community of people who supported Link. As time went on, more people joined. Some joined to avenge their fallen heroes. Others joined because they liked the idea of being a knight.

As the contest got more heated, the Knights created a board on Slinky to use as a quieter place to discuss battle plans, and talk amongst each other. As time went on, the base on Slinky became more impressive. Shops were opened up, the Battle Arena was created, and other ideas came about. This board was not particularly secret, merely separate from the other board. It was easy enough to find where it was, if one simply read the topic on the contest board.

Back on the Summer 2002 Contest Board, other groups existed, such as the Army of Sephiroth, and others. The Knights and the Army of Sephiroth declared themselves rivals and various wars were fought, before the end of the contest. Most of the aggressive action was taken on secret boards and the records have been lost over time. One should also note that both the Knights and Sephiroth Army sent many spies during this time.

Near the end of the contest, Slinky started getting rather filled up with unnecessary topics, and the Knights tried to discourage this. The Knights did not want Slinky to become like the contest board, where a topic could disappear into the nether regions of pages within seconds.

Once the contest ended, the purpose of the Knights was gone. With Link victorious, there was no longer any need to try to help him win the contest, because he had already won. The purpose of the Knights ended at that point, but by that time, they had become a community, and they did not want to go their separate ways at that point, so they stayed together. At first The knights tried just talking about things but traffic grew dim. So, John decided to try something new and invite refuges to the city, but not all Knights were happy with this. Some tried to stop this from happening. Because of this, some of the refugees became angry with the Knights, and created their own opposing groups, such as Scythe di Morte.

The Knights then moved to a new board, the Fighting Legends base, and they tried to keep this board secret, so that it would not be filled with meaningless topics, like the contest board had been and Slinky now does. The creation of this secret board increased tensions between Knights and the people of Slinky. New wars broke out, and the final result was the destruction of the small Scythe di Morte board by a still unknown person, likely a Knight, and in retaliation the Knight base at Fighting Legends was destroyed. These tragic events caused much hurt feelings, and nearly destroyed the Knights and the people of Slinky.

After the unfortunately modding incident that caused both bases to be destroyed, (It is still unknown who modded the Scythe base but it is known that it was modded first) a peace was reached, and Scythe di Morte was disbanded so that this chaos would not happen again. The Knights then moved to a new board that of Another World, where they still reside to this day. Since then, the Knights have been doing their own thing, staying a community, and primarily role-playing various adventures.

So yeah, since I can see people occasionally stop by here to see if anyone is still around, I thought they might enjoy that bit of nostalgia. And that was only part 3 of 6! The other parts had to do with an actual FAQ section, a "Code of the Knight" section, and various other things.

Man, looking through some of the various files I have saved from that time, I can see just how full of myself I was.

Good thing I'm not like that anymore!

I think in a later version of the history that I used to post, I had updated it with some of the other stuff we'd done. Like creating a council to make governing decisions. And the repercussions of various arguments that had occurred / schisms and such. Oh, and remember that time some variation of "The Sephiroth Army" thought we were trying to bring about their downfall by infiltrating their higher offices and sowing seeds of discontent or something?

Oh, while I'm here, I'd like to open this topic up to anyone who wants to post how they're doing / what they've been up to.

Let's see, in the last 9 years, I graduated college, got a job in Aerospace working on the B-52, left that job and started working as a Rocket Scientist (Rocket Engineer, if you want to get technical) and bought a house.

So yeah, not much, I guess.

These days I don't play much in the way of video games, I just don't have time. But I keep meaning to get my computer updated so I can play StarCraft 2. Although I have no idea when I'd actually have the time to play it.

Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, I heard from ValiantKnight! Some may remember he used to be an active member of the group, then he suddenly dropped of the face of the earth and we never heard from him again. Ignitus and I used to wonder what he was up to, whether he was alive, etc. So I sent him a message to the last known email address I had of his in August of 2009. And apparently he responded in December of 2009! I guess that shows how often he checked that email address. To be fair, I didn't notice his response till earlier this year, I think. So that shows how often I check my old email address!

Anyway, he's still alive; working to pay the bills. He didn't say much more than that. But hey, he's still alive!

If Ignitus ever stops by and sees this, I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that.

By the way, if any board hunters stop by, I was wondering if you could update me on the status of the larger GameFAQs world.

Back in the day, there used to be a ton of various board factions; Like Empire Z and Eagle Empire, etc. Looking at the boards those groups used to be based at; while a few have a little life left in them, it seems they've all mostly disbanded.

Are there currently groups that have risen up to replace them on new boards? Or has the era of the message board faction largely passed into the annals of history?

I think you're pretty safe about me not revealing any embarrassing information I might have in those archives. For one thing, they're not much of an archive as much as a few topics I'd saved that I had found interesting at the time.

But beyond that, anything embarrassing I have about anyone else will only embarrass me more-so. I was (and still am) probably the oldest person who was hanging out with the group back then. I was 21 years old when the group started, so it's bad enough to admit I was spending a ton of time on a message board with a bunch of 13-year-olds, let alone that I kept dirt on them. I come off enough as a creepy old man as it is, I don't need to enhance that image.

Although in my defense, it's always been hard to tell age on the Internet. I still suspect that Duck was and is an 80 year old woman from Romania. The fact that it's been ten years doesn't change her age to older than 80 years, that's just how old she looks. She is in fact much older.

Basically, I've long believed that Duck is really the mythical figure Baba Yaga of ancient folklore, and when she's not eating small children or whatever, she's hanging around on gaming message boards.

As for you Orange, I remember you. I also remember that I ended up reading the "Adventures!" web-comic in order to find out what the heck your name meant, and ended up sticking with that series till it ended. Good times.

Hey, some actual activity! Huzzah!

Thanks for the info, SwordMaster! The Galactic Empire sounds familiar. I think some of the members had stopped by here a few times back in the day. And I may stop by Champion Pub from time to time. It looks like there's some good activity going on there.

Carl, good to see you again! Hopefully life is treating you well enough.

And Happy Holiday(s) Liger. I myself celebrate Sithmas, where I use the increased strength of darkness around the time of the Winter Solstice to power myself up in preparation as the light starts to gain in strength again. But rejoice, the dark-side shall still rule for another 3 months!

Also I eat Sithmas cookies. They're basically the same as Christmas cookies. The only difference is I call them Sithmas cookies.
