the birth of a new era!the era of violent games!
alone in the dark,a game inspired by the work of h.p.lovecraft,regarded to be the first survival horror in history.it was developed by infogrames,a french company.
resident evil was inspired by this milestone,derceto,a haunted mansion in louisiana in the year of 1923(i think).sometimes,when i played the game,it's atmosphere somehow reminded me of the exorcist(1973)-_-
the main character is edward carnby that is sent to investigate this mansion,but once inside it,he cannot go out-he's trapped.there's no turning back.now he must solve the mistery of this haunted mansion.this was the property of jeremy hartwood that was "devoured" by the spirits of derceto.
this game has some disturbing music & sounds,while the graphics are very primitve.this may also be the very first 3d game.what an atmosphere of horror!there are 5 levels in derceto:1st floor,2nd floor,attic,basement & underground caverns.you start the game in the attic.the weapons you will find are a rifle,a pistol,knifes & a sword.the firing system is just like in resident evil-you have to aim first,then shoot.
this game is very hard-you start with only 20 life points & no weapon.the fighting system is complicated-once you are hit,in most of the cases you will die.the enemy will strike you untill you're dead.the zombies from the begining are an example.
the game is not short,you can finish it in under 3 hours if you know the game;if you don't,in aproximately 8-9 hours.
in the caverns you will encounter the chtonian,a worm that is found in the work of h.p.lovecraft.
the ending is quite simple:you have to put a pentagram talisman in a slot at the base of the malevolent tree found in the caverns.to get the talisman you have to use a false book in the library to open a secret door to the talisman.after you put the talisman on that slot,you have to throw your lit lamp towards the tree.after that some disturbing images &...get the heck out of there.the caverns will collapse.now that you have solved the mistery of the mansion,you can get out.at the final cinematic,a ghost in a car will lift you up...taking you,edward canrby into unknown.
