Alone in the Dark has some great ideas but is unfortunately broken.

If you were looking for a easy 1000 gamerpoints like I was when I rented the game from Gamefly, look for a different title, this game is brutally hard, for me as completing Halo 3 on Legendary by myself was easier and I suck at Halo. Here's why...

Story- I didn't really care about the story but you play a man named Edward Carnby, a paranormal investigator with amnesia, some people are about to kill him when almost literally all Hell breaks loose, Edward meets a woman named and Sarah and basically, they try to save the world. You don't even need to play through to the game to find out what happens as there is a level select option, it also recaps previous plot points similar to the show "24".

Graphics- Most of the environments look alright, but the fire effects in this game are excellent. The flames realistically lick walls and just look awesome. Characters look next-gen, not as good as Fallout 3, but still nice. Sometimes items clip, but I only saw that a few times.

Sound- The music is not that great but the character dialogue is worse: Almost every time Edward opens his mouth, the f or s word will stream from it. Other characters dialogue sounds cliché

Gameplay- It's very tedious and difficult.
The camera sucks, sometimes it can lead to your death because it can go all over the place and it can force you to face the other direction away from the monster or some items that can help you defeat him. This has led to half of my deaths fighting a certain monster in the museum level.
The inventory system is okay but good be way better. The items you can carry are only the ones that you can fit in your jacket's left and right pockets. Right pockets are for explosive items and the left is for tools such as ammo. Using the inventory is in real time which means a quick death if your not careful.
Your enemies include little spider like creatures called Ratz, possessed humans called Humanz, Vampirz, cracks in the walls and floors called fissures, and black goo. Your gun is almost useless, the only things it can kill are Ratz, to kill Humanz and Fissures, you need to use something flammable, and even then Humanz still don't die, you need to aim for their fissures, which is a pain, by throwing a Molotov cocktail or exploding bottle then firing it or lighting a chair on fire and swinging at the Humanz, which is the quickest way to kill him.
You can drive in this game but don't look forward to it, it's broken, the cars you drive handle really poorly. Trying to get the cockpit achievement will be a pain I assure you. You will die a lot on the second mission and probably burn the game.
The controls being the most important thing is the worst thing in this game. Sometimes, you have to use a fire extinguisher to open a door, but you will hit the walls instead quite often. A is to run, b is to reload, and x is to jump....seriously? God, what a mess.
There's more problems in this game but those are my biggest gripes. Not to mention this game isn't very scary. If you can handle the horrific controls, rent this game first. If you want an excellent game stay clear of this. Alone in the Dark might cause you to break your controller and your fingers. In a nutshell, this game is not worth even $5.
