With bad level design and clunky controls, AvP is a missed opportunity

I was really excited when I heard they were making a new AvP as I was a huge fan of AvP 2. Unfortunately this game does not live up to its predecessor due to many reasons.

The first thing you will notice is the level design. It is linear, boring and unoriginal. The early predator mission is a good example of this. You are in a forest but you are confined to a single path pretty much the whole way. There is no aspect of freedom or exploration. The same goes for the marine and alien missions unfortunately. None of the environments you experience are particularly interesting.

I found the marine missions to be the most boring. The game tries to be scary but falls way short. Shooting aliens doesn't feel as rewarding as the previous games because the animations of the aliens getting shot look awkward and the guns sound like pea shooters and pack no punch.

The other two campaigns would have been much better if it weren't for the clunky and awkward controls. The predator missions aren't that bad and I actually still had fun during them. I love being able to toy with my prey before I pounce and rip the spine from their body. But I found jumping from place to place irritating at times because the game would not let me jump to some places even though it seems like I should. Playing as the alien is irritating all around. Climbing up and on top of walls feels clunky and disorienting. Pulling off a nice wall cimb, leap and execute combo is just too annoying to do for it to be worth it.

I thought the graphics were very good but unfortunately the uninteresting levels don't do the engine justice. Character models and faces don't look particularly fluid either. Of course the best part about the game is the executions, which are bloody, brutal and very rewarding. Sound is not done very well however. Being the predator and hearing the marines shoot at you is like being at a paintball match, the guns just have absolutely no punch whatsoever and sound even worse at a distance.

I honestly did not bother playing the multiplayer but from what I've heard it's practically dead, I could be wrong though.

If you can get this game for incredibly cheap then I would recommend maybe playing the predator mission if you're up for collecting some heads as trophies. But if you buy this game expecting it to live up to its lauded predecessor, you are going to be terribly disappointed.
