Meh.

User Rating: 6.5 | Aliens vs. Predator SNES
Alien vs. Predator was created during a time when there was some kind of craze for ugly creatures beating each other up. Alien vs. Predator was all over the comics and gaming scene. I thought we were done with it, but now two movies have sprung up on the idea. So if Hollywood is scraping the bottom of that barrel, I might as well go back and review one of these games.

So how do I describe this game...hmmmm..I know! Pretty much sucky. There. How's that.

While the arcade version of this game is all kinds of coolness, this version makes you feel depressed. Almost like life isn't worth living anymore. Why? Well, let's dissect it a bit. First of all, it's the same kind of gameplay as the arcade game...try to make your character go to the right of the screen and beat up whatever's in your way. Sounds like this version should work as well as the arcade if that's all there is to it right? Right.

The problem is how they went about it. First the animation. Wait....what animation? It barely animates. Every character seems to have about 3 or 4 poses that they just snap to. It's almost as bad as a south park episode..but not nearly as entertaining. So it looks like your character is just an image on a stick moving across the screen. And everything is SO SLOW! It just takes forever to do anything. Who would have thought that aliens with reputations as merciless killing machines would move slower than my dead grandmother? This is the major problem I have with the game.

Another problem is the art itself. Don't get me wrong, there are actually some cool things going on in the backgrounds. It looks alien. The colors are drab and creepy. It has an interesting feel to the way it's rendered out. But there is just something about it that feels....unfinished. Another problem may be that the characters blend in too much with the background. sometimes it just all looks like one big drab colored mess. So I applaud them for the direction they wanted to take...it's just poorly executed. Which means all the good intentions on the art side of things are thrown in the garbage because nobody cares after they see the final product. Sorry. That's how it is.

The game is short as well...though I haven't decided if that's a good thing or a bad thing yet. I found myself really wanting the thing to be over with quickly unfortunately. I say unfortunately because I wanted to like the game. I mean, it's a predator going to planets to chase down other aliens to slaughter. What's not to like about that idea? Again, it was just poorly executed. It just gets repetitive, which turns to boring, which turns to frustrating, which turns to heavy drinking, which turns to domestic abuse, which turns to jail, which turns to divorce, which turns to living in a gutter as an alcoholic. So if you want to go down that road, check the game out. Otherwise, you can live without it.
