Very difficult and strange game, but a heck of a story.

User Rating: 9.5 | Alan Wake X360
Finally, a game with a plot. No mere shoot-em-up where you have to rescue the world from yet another virus that makes everybody into aliens. This game plays like a Stephen King novel. It borrows from that source and from "Twin Peaks," as well as other aspects of horror and mystery fiction. Which is good.

You star as Alan Wake, a novelist who has suffered from writer's block. He goes to a small town to do a book signing, but the town and the woods turn out to be much more dangerous and intriguing than he thought. Will he make it out alive?

There are times when the combat seems a little too hard for its own good. A game should be challenging, but not so hard that you have to do the same thing 752 times in a row. The storyline unfolds with genuinely scary scenes and effects. You run across puzzles as well as deadly fights with the twisted Taken characters. Throughout the game, you will struggle to reach lighted areas, which help ward off enemies, and you will make use of your wits as much as your weapons.

There is a novel based on the game, which is also worth picking up. This is a deep and complex game, which demands a lot from its players, and offers many rewards for the mind.

Good luck.
