Aion: flashy, but certainly not classy. With the epically tedious grind and the flawed PvP system, is it worth it?

User Rating: 6.5 | AION PC
At first glance, Aion is one of the most beautiful MMORPGs available right now. The character customization is undoubtedly one of the best out there, however, the mechanics allow for some strange looking characters. The terrain is beautiful and a great amount of effort was used to create the starting areas. The first ten levels consist of completing unique quests with interesting objectives. After reaching level ten, the player ascends to become a winged Daeva, immortal and enduring. At this point, however, the game begins a long downhill fall. Quests objectives begin to lose unique qualities, and the amount of quests available are not enough to level from. Instead, one must endure a long and tedious grind to go from level to level. By level 20, quests are available in areas through which rifts open, allowing for spontaneous PvP. However, this usually consists of a large amount of high level enemy players killing lower players who have no chance to fight back. At level 25, the abyss opens for the players. This area is an open PvP area, which also contains NPC enemies. Killing either a player or an NPC in the abyss awards Abyss Points which can be used to increase rank and obtain better weapons and armor. The abyss, however, is also a "ganking" zone and groups of higher level enemies frequently fly around killing any player in their path. Crafting also exists in Aion, but is a long and tedious process and is a veritable money-pit. The time and money spent crafting is usually not worth the reward. I give this game a 6.5 for great graphics, combat system, and character customization. Points are lost for the grind and the uneven PvP system.
