You control a powerful wizard and choose from many different races. The maps are filled with many obstacles and resources to obtain and control. Your wizard and heros can manage very powerful spells. Battles are very strategic, meaning a brilliant mind can overcome oppressing odds. This is turn-based strategy at its best.
The graphics are dated to an extent but the gameplay is so good. Games can last many hours but the tools are there to keep things clean. I've turned many people onto this game and they still play it today. Hotseat games are a great option for multiple users and matches can be set to precise criteria.
If you're a fan of TBS, if you want a very detailed game, this is for you. I play with a certain mod that expands the game to extreme lengths. It's tricky to set up a hotseat, but you do it through single player skirmish, and many friends can play. Search for the popular mods to get the most out of AoW.
