Although not reaching the phenomenal standards of later strategy games such as Total War, Age of Empires 1 is a true classic just because of the sheer amount of detail and diversity in the game design. However, the game has some problems as well. The Random Map mode for example, is very challenging and in fact, quite repetitive. However, the diversity of the different civilizations, with unique technology trees and units, is something to admire. The campaign mode, on the other hand, is the pinnacle of the game. The scenarios are very enjoyable and different from each other, and you always have the sensation that you're experiencing something historically significant. In fact, it also teaches you quite a bit about history. Overall, the game looks great, sounds great and is something that you can very much enjoy 16 years after its release date!
