This ain't Age of Empires. It's too cartoony from Ensemble Studios style of graphics. Change the name, you're giving Age Of Empires a bad name. I'm a huge fan and i won't be playing this game that doesn't have the look and feel I came to know back then. Time to reinstall StarCraft II

MrBlobz 6 pts

why does he wait until halfway through the interview to mention that it is FREEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

MrBlobz 6 pts

I'm really looking forward to this game, the cartoony graphics are actually a plus for me.

selbie 11 pts

Cartoony graphics does not attract a new audience. It just makes your game look childish. AoE was great the way it was in the first two versions.

jamesjiao 5 pts

I just tried to scroll the game lol.

Looking forward to this and Civ5... the online gonna be free(from Microsoft?) I can't complain.

rahmatollahi 5 pts

Are they making games for 5 years old kids now?

illuminatirexx 6 pts

that ms guy relay sux at presenting a product...

GameScoutKL 5 pts

I would have never guessed that this game has any tangency with AoE

Tharros89 5 pts

Doesn't really remind me of the AoE series that took up so much of my time when I was 12-13. I will reserve judgment for now until I know more, but for now, I will stick with Starcraft 2 thanks.

gogly 5 pts

haha "whos got the prettiest city". they should seriously change the name of the game, get rid of the words age of empires, its misleading.

gogly 5 pts

Microsoft nowadays are trying way too hard to be mainstream and attract casual players

stEElyDaN909 5 pts

This is Microsoft's version of corrupt-a-wish. We asked for a new AoE game and this is what they gave us.

Slayerduckie 5 pts

AoE was the first pc game i played and the reason i got into pc gaming. As and old time Aoe and AoM fan, this AoE online crap makes me want to throw up. Cruse you micro$oft for killing off an old time epic.

wiiwiiwii22 5 pts

thats a children game...is like MY EMPIRE ON FACEBOOK!

emlki 5 pts

humm, i like AoE, but this is disappointing

lucas182 16 pts

im a fan of AoE games... but the whole thing where your infantry destroys stone buildings is a bit old. they should take that out of this game

Doz8u 5 pts

When i heard of a AoE online , i didnt have much hope, i was expecting some 3rd person wow clone lol, but watching this gives me hope... this looks epic!!

The bottom-line for me here is this: Am I, as a 'hardcore' Age player and long-time fan of this franchise, a part of the target audience for this game? The entirety of the Age franchise has been a game for RTS enthusiasts who also liked a bit of history with their gameplay doze. Even Age of Mythology, which staggered a bit from the real-world historical line, incorporated elements of history and historical mythology in the game to satiate their core fanbase of AoE & AoK while still retaining the core 'Agey' formula by not fiddling too much with the look and feel of things. But the obvious focus of the devs is to make the game 'more approachable for the new audience'. Now I don't feel there's anything wrong with that, but, I hope that for the sake of the franchise, the answer to the question I posed at the beginning of this post doesn't turn out to be a resounding no.

The art style reminds me of the old obelix & asterix cartoons. Don't know what to think about this new direction.

ckynick254 5 pts

Not my type of game, COHO is more like it.

Kewl_guy 5 pts

AoE SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET. Age 2 is still my favorite strategy game, already signed up for the beta, I am not a huge fan of the art style but as long as the game stays true i am happy

asinantr 5 pts

i think its a sweet idea.. dont know what it will turn out to be, but nobody should talk sh** about these guys, just reserve judgement or play the game, and then talk sh** about it if you dont like it.. i love AOE so i am gonna give this a shot.

arnooke 5 pts

lol 'detailed' buildings =). So THATS why the units were as big as their houses

Henu 8 pts

the new art style is hideous! A big part of AoE experience was the detailed building, units and other visuals. "We have a new art style to make it more approachable for new players" - they are losing more old AoE fans with this crap than gaining new.

kylops 5 pts

Hmm, sadly this doesn't impress me at all. It's nothing like the AoE series, but let's wait and see.

Blazember 5 pts

this looks like garbage what happened?! it's like they're taking a step backwards the art style sucks, AOE II graphics are way better than this, it looks like a little kiddy game and its so different i'm disappointed. of course it's worse cuz it's freeware...

Gelugon_baat 622 pts

The new artwork, at first glance, seems far removed from the ones used in Age of Empires to me. But I later realized that it may be an attempt by Microsoft Games Studios to fool ratings bodies into thinking it is more cartoony and whimsical than it is. Couple this with the fact that it may be free-to-play, Microsoft will want as many people playing it as possible. The "T" rating from ESRB that earlier 'Age' games got, for example, just won't cut it if Microsoft is aiming for a base of players that is as huge as possible. Also, the artwork likely also has a goal of helping the developers achieve a range of PC scalability. Being all cartoony with flat-colored surfaces may make it easier on older PC hardware. (This beta version shown here seems to be a bit choppy however; the developers are probably optimizing the frame rate as I am writing this.) I only hope the developers would include options to take advantage of newer hardware and DirectX versions.

R4gn4r0k 5 pts

Looks great, art style looks great as well ! I hope they send me the beta, can't wait to play more Age of Empires ! Too many whiners seriously, without even playing one second of the game. "Traditional Age gameplay" "Full blow age of empires game for free" "Deeper than other Age games" ... yeah that sounds really ... really bad. tooki: Age of Empires 3 wasn't bad :S. It just wasn't as good as Age of Kings or Age of Mythology.

deathstar79 5 pts

Why was this at Sony's press conference? It's Microsoft published and not for PS3...

Centurion95 18 pts

Hmm, interesting concept, free to play main game, customability, I am interested although the art style will take getting used too

nimbulan2000 5 pts

It looks like it plays similar to Age of Empires but the art style is terrible. Why did they think that was a good idea?

VidGamAnonymous 5 pts

The "more approachable art style" is made for kids. Kids don't have a lot patience making an RTS a bad fit for them. Plus it turns off older gamers who wanted to try it

scm87 5 pts

i hate the look of this game - this is not what any true age of empires fan wanted at all

32605250 5 pts

Farmville+Ikariam= Age Of Empires Online.

tooki 8 pts

The whole time the interviewee keeps saying "this is Age Of Empires," but anyone who played AoE1, AoE2, or AoM is probably thinking the exact opposite. Almost reminds me more of Battleforge in that you can apparently just call in units on the battlefield wherever you need them. I would pay an exorbitant amount for a quality modern strategy game in the vein of AoE2, but all we get is more freeware and nickle-and-dime pricing schemes.

tooki 8 pts

Oooo.......premium content model....just what all of us AoE fans always wanted /sarcasm. Microsoft, why don't you make some new IP for this crap instead of ruining a classic series. AoE3 was bad enough.
