Age of Empires Online User Review
- Difficulty:
- Very Easy
- Time Spent:
- 10 Hours or Less
- The Bottom Line:
- "Check your bargain bin"
Im always careful about games that tells you its free to play the game. reasons being the following:
1. Never ending grind
2. poor backstory
3. random generated content
4. Free 2 play always equals "soon to play"
After playing Age of Empires online to lv10, I am still waiting for the game to start. To give me a reason why to play it. The singleplayer content is really slim, nothing apealing about it at all. Becomes repetative after just a few missions.
Takes you one or two mission before you get slapped in the face with the first attempt to persuade you to pay for the game.
But dude its a multiplayer game!
True but you need to grind trough hours of singleplayer before you get to do any PVP or Co-Op mission. And calling the PVP
The game just doesn´t feel ready for launch yet. The cartoony look im ok with, even tough I know why they went with that design, Im ok with it. Except for the fact that all you units have one color(blue) I disslike it tremedously, everything is blue!
as a free user you will have a disadvantage for pvp wich for some, including myself is actually a reason to partake in the pvp content, its give you the "in your face" feeling when you beat someone whos units do 20% more damage and gather 20% faster then your own.
But as soon you meet someone with a mediocre familiarity to multiplayer rts play the premium users really stand out.
I have yet to encounter a mission that require any form of strategic thinking to beat. There was a "defend your town center" mission that I looked forward to when I saw it, but as soon as the map loaded I saw walls, towers. So the game gave me the solution instantly. Build more towers, repair the walls.
I will stick with the game for a few more level up, but if its continues to be this easy and shallow I see no reason to continue playing.
Free 2 play is a good thing, players gets to play the game before you decide if you want to make a purchase or not. However when your constantly reminded about that there is premium content, you get distracted from the actuall gameplay and start focusing on the negatives.

I agreed with Gamespot's review at launch. But, as of 10/17/2012, the game is much improved and deserves a re-review.

It's a great game worth playing. The best of the series. The graphics are fun and amazing. Great co-op and pvp.

This is a solid game undermined by a terrible launch, but with many problems fixed is now worth trying out.
