Hi. I've just installed AoK and AoC. AoC is patched to 1.0c. Upon starting a game and clicking a unit, the correct sound is heard. I can hear the sound trailing away faster than it should be, though, and afterwards no unit or building makes the right sounds for selecting or moving.
It's like all I can hear is the faintest bass part of the sound and the rest isn't playing. So, if I turn my volume right up I can hear a dull thud in time with a lumberjack's axe, but the full sound isn't playing.
I've had a similar problem on iTunes before but that cleared itself up. Is this a driver issue? I've tried the user patch but the problem persists.

Clarification - the problem applies to all in game sound effects. Menu sound effects still work as normal. I can't remember having this trouble on a previous install and I don't recall ever messing with the program files.

I never have a browser open while playing so I very much doubt that it's Youtube :/

I don't know then, but it might have to do with the age of this game and compatability with new computers. There is a patch that is meant to address certain video problems due to the age of the game, but I don't know if it affects sound. Check the "user patch" topic for more info and a link.

Already tried the user patch with no change (although it eliminated the three minute wait for the game to boot which was nice).

But I just want it to wooooooork.

If you're on Windows 7, it could be reducing the sound. Try this... go into Control Panel > Sounds, and on the Communications tab, make sure it's not muting sounds when it detects communication activity.

^ I'm on Vista unfortunately.
I've updated my SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio driver but my sound card is a "Philips SAA713X, Hybrid Capture Device" and I'm getting a "network error" when I try to download the latest driver for that from CNet.
I don't know whether the sounds in game have changed, but I turned my volume all the way up and found out what is happening:
- for the first couple of seconds of the game, the sounds work as they should
- after that, all sound effects play at incredibly low volume (they sound normal with my speakers at max volume and are utterly inaudible at normal volume)
- the quality of the sounds varies. Sometimes the full sound plays, and sometimes just a fragment seems to be playing (not sure if that's the right way to describe it). The quality seems to depend on where my screen is - it does not vary with time if I keep the screen still.
What on Earth is going on?

Side note - all sounds effects work fine in the menus

The thing I said may apply to Vista as well. Try it. If that doesn't help... Is your monitor maybe disturbing your speaker cord?

I also had a problem where the sound scaled funny. At 50% I couldn't hear it at ALL and at 100% (in the AOE options, I'm talking about) I could hear it super well. Anything under 100, I couldn't really hear it.
