A fun, fast-paced vertical shoot-'em-up!

User Rating: 7.5 | Sonic Wings SNES
"Aero Fighters" (or Sonic Wings) is a shoot-'em-up plane game. There are a choice of various characters from around the world including the U.S.A., Britain, Japan, and strangely Sweden. Each character has their own storyline. When I played the game I chose the Swede purely because I thought he looked the coolest (and that he was a Viking). His storyline was quite simple: to become the most powerful man in the world. Obviously the storyline isn't the most important thing to the game. The graphics are OK in this game, but aren't anything special - especially for the year this was made. The sound I personally found pretty dismal, just various rocket and gun sounds and some explosions. The music seemed a bit scrappy sounding, but it was hard to tell when you're constantly firing at the enemies. This is where the game becomes fun. Each level is quite short but contains a seemingly never ending barrage of enemies until you reach the level boss. This game is very arcadey-feeling as you zip around avoiding the enemy gunfire, and retaliating in kind. Each character you choose also has their own plane with various speeds and different weapons etc. The controls are simple enough, the D-pad moves your plane around the screen, the Y button fires and the B button uses the special attack. The game isn't that long, with only 7 short levels, but if you are not used to these types of games then you will find it very hard indeed.
