I've never been that big a fan of games that feel like they're playing YOU instead of the other way around. Despite Aces of the Galaxy (not the best title for a videogame, but this game's use of dialog leaves a lot to be desired...more on that later) feeling very much less like a real game and more like a movie that's taking you along for the ride, there is some fleeting fun to be had here.

A lot of that fun is garnered from the flashy and colorful visuals...the graphics do give the game a very epic feel, and they do a great job of sucking you in. Although the enemies you'll be facing don't exactly sport a tremendous amount of detail, they're still easy on the eyes, and you'll see plenty of 'em...maybe too much. With no autofire feature, your thumb will be cramping up and cramping up A LOT.

And even though you have a fair amount of freedom to move within the rails you're stuck on, it's not long before you feel like the impact you're actually making on what's taking place is minimal. For one, during my first two playthroughs, both games lasted several minutes, and although I was shooting and shooting and shooting some more, I had a hard time dicerning exactly where any of my "skills" were making much of a difference. On one of the earlier levels, my performance earned a rating of three stars (out of five); two levels later, I managed to earn five-out-of-five for an "excellent" performance. What exactly did I do differently, or better, to improve? Damned if I know.

And there in lies AOTG's biggest flaw: you feel so much more like a spectator than a participant. Add to that the complete lack of any true boss battles, and the feeling that something's off here just never goes away. That feeling includes the awkward, cringe-inducing written dialog...just thank your lucky starts that you only have to read it and not actually hear it.

But if even it feels more like Sewer Shark at times than it does Starfox 64, it's still a trip worth taking, as the pretty visuals serve up just enough eye-candy to keep you going early on. Just don't be surprised if you start feeling like the game could very well start playing itself if you let go of the controller.
