So the more realistic controls were too hard for you to comprehend, and you ACTUALLY need the game to do most of the maneuvering for you?
...now I know the kind of person Namco was catering to.

if you're so bitter about the game, why do you still take the time to discuss it?

Realistic doesn't always equal better or more fun.

I'm use to the 'realistic' controls but I tried out the arcade style controls since my friends were playing with me and I was too lazy to putz with changing it. Well, I thought I could just adapt to it but I found it very limiting. I'm not sure how you're suppose to use it even if the game is scripted. Finding targets by just turning left and right?
I couldn't figured out how to loop in anything but a 90º angle. Seems you can't turn and pull up at the same time.
So I just switched it back. Honestly harder if you're use to it and you have less maneuverability.

Why are Ace fans like you such elitists? It's a game. To take that stance makes as much sense as a Super Mario Bros. fan saying anyone who uses the fireballs is a lesser human being because they aren't using the "raw skill" of jumping on the enemies. People can have any preference they want to control in a game, and no option makes that person any less capable mentally than another.

Indeed, the series has lowered to an abysmal level of casualness.

Because the game has gone from a (not realistic) arcade flight game with planes that somewhat handled realistically and was more about actual dogfights, to focusing on shoving as many explosions down the player's throat and simplifying the action?
The fact that what was "Novice" controls in the previous games is now "Optimal" displays my point.

don't think it's about casual or not, but just fun.
Play Skycrawlers on wii or the AC legacy on 3DS.L They are much easier (too easy some could say) than ACAH, yet they're incredibly fun because they kept the AC serie spirit, something this game is lacking in every single way.
ACAH is just the COD of flying games.

Do COD missions take place entirely in corridors, these days? And force you to use specific weapons for each mission?

OK...
Old-school Ace Combat fanboys... CALM DOWN.
Assault Horizon fanboy... CALM DOWN.
Old Ace Combat games were great, I'm a fan of them. BUT I can ALSO appreciate Assault Horizon. It's ALSO a good game. Not great, because it was trying a whole lot of new things, and didn't do them as well as it probably should have. But it's still good.
Optimal/Novice controls work just fine. You can't do an angled LOOP, but you CAN pull up and to the side, and you DO have a good measure of freedom when doing so. If you want to switch to "proper" flight controls, YOU CAN DO THAT TOO. Don't complain that both options are viable. That's just stupid. A skilled player using traditional flight controls WILL outperform someone on "Optimal" settings consistently.
DFM is horribly over-scripted in single player, and causes some stupid things to happen, and there are some easily exploited bugs in the system when you go online, but it's a good concept, and when people aren't deliberately breaking it, it works well to break up the monotony of the old Ace Combat loop-fests and gives a fast-paced intensity that's very different from most other air combat games.
Old Ace Combat games are great. Assault Horizon is great. It's different enough that the developers were promoting it before release as more of a spin-off than a continuation of the original Ace Combat series, which is why it's not titled Ace Combat 7. I hope they make AC7, AND I hope they make AH2.
And for the record, no, this doesn't play like Call of Duty, and will probably play even less like it in a sequel.

Ace Combat has always been the lowest common denominator of flying games. I don't know where this elitism comes from when the series was directed to casual from the very beginning.
