Action combined with intelligence. Uncommon these days in the world of gaming, but 8 Eyes pulls it off fairly well.

The game is difficult. After spending a couple hours mastering the controls and getting the timing just right, you'll get the hang of it. You will need to keep control of your life force, saving all your life for the boss fights at the end of each level. As you finally complete each world, you're given a jewel along with a clue, hinting at a particular sequence to place the jewels in at the end of the game to get to the final stage.

While the controls are a little clunky, especially in 1-player mode when you're controlling both the fencer Orin and the falcon Cutrus, the game does present some interesting innovations. First, the 2-player cooperative mode is very cool, allowing 1 player to be the fencer and 1 player to be the falcon, and in this mode, player 2 is given full control of the falcon, able to move anywhere on screen.

The music, while the NES quality can get annoying, is varied and unique to each world. Each tune possesses a classical feel to it, is rather subdued and adds to the intelligent feel of the game. The visuals are colorful and sprites are well drawn, though nothing overly special. The sounds are about average.

The replay value is drawn from the unique style of this game. You won't play another game quite like it. Also, after completing the game once, you may play again, this time with the enemies moving more quickly. Very difficult but a nice challenge!
