I completely disagree with Gamespot's review. This game is well worth the money.
NHL Arcade is a throwback to the generic hockey arcade games of the past. The action is fun and furious; expect a constant barrage of big hits followed by players crashing the net. While the A.I. of your team mates may not be the best, it is decent enough to be able to set up some semblance of a play. The player controlled characters work just fine and allow for some mind blowing deke outs and on your opponent's goaltender.
As far as content goes there is not much more than the bare minimum, but as far as this game is concerned that is all you need. The game has trophy support and online play, which seems to work smoothly. In true arcade fashion you play as one of two teams, either Red or Blue. These teams can be customized with your favorite NHL players. There are only four goaltenders to choose from, but this is purely an aesthetic choice. The NHL players also are similar in value according to their category; fast, all-around, or strong. (Think NES's Ice Hockey when you were able to choose Skinny, Medium, or Fat)
The games high point is definitely it's multi-player. Remember, this called 3 on 3 NHL ARCADE for a reason. It is little more than a souped of version of bubble hockey, and if playing with friends, you will be more than glad it is. The controls are simple and the power ups are effective but not overbearing. Anyone can pick this game up and have a great time playing. If you are at a party and this game is put on, expect to be waiting for your turn to play like everyone else.
