1942 was the predecessor of most of the overhead shooters during the NES era. The graphics and gameplay were excellent for it's time, and the challenge was decent enough to keep you coming back for more. The boss battles, in particular, were creative and challenging. I wasn't terribly impressed with the sound, but it was fairly realistic for it's time. I would say that this was one of the best early NES games around, although I would say 1943 was a big improvement on the franchise. If I were looking at going back to play the classics, I would only spend a few hours on 1942 and go find 1943.
