A decent remake of a classic without any improvements of substance

I was pleasantly surprised when I first got my Playstation 3 and saw that a new version of 1942 had been released. I had fond memories of playing the original NES version during my childhood with my father and so I had no hesitation in throwing down a few bucks for a classic.

I played the first few levels both by myself and with my father in co-op and had a great time with the game. After I completed the game on my fourth attempt however, I could not help but feel some disappointment with the game. There is no fault with the game play or presentation, but with the content or lack thereof.

The game is very short; only lasting five levels before ending abruptly. The first three levels are good fun and the bosses put up a good fight, but as you reach the end of the fourth and fifth levels, and fight the same bosses you had already fought before you can't help but feel cheated. The game isn't all that long or deep to begin with, and simply repeating a boss in a game with only five levels simply isn't acceptable.

The only thing about the game that could contribute to any replay value would be the co-op aspect of the game. It's a simple game that is a ton of fun to play with a friend, but only once or twice. After beating the entire game a second or third time, there's very little reason to touch it ever again. There are no notable unlockables and no trophy support of any kind.

While the game is cheap, the content does not need to be considering what you can get with the same amount of money elsewhere. A lot of improvements could have been made with the franchise but all that was done was splash a fresh coat of paint on what could have been an addictive game had there been more levels and any form of an upgrade system.
