Xbox One cloud service to offer three times console’s performance - Report

Dan Chiappini
By Dan Chiappini, Editor of GameSpot AU

Cloud services to compliment hardware capabilities; provide richer, larger game worlds.

The cloud service supporting Microsoft's Xbox One will multiply the device’s local performance threefold, according to a report by group program manager of Xbox incubation and prototyping, Jeff Henshaw, in an interview with OXM.

Henshaw said that the partnership between console hardware and the supporting web service will allow for the ability to create more complex, permanent spaces for gamers to explore and play in.

"We're provisioning for developers for every physical Xbox One we build, we're provisioning the CPU and storage equivalent of three Xbox Ones on the cloud," he said. "We're doing that flat out so that any game developer can assume that there's roughly three times the resources immediately available to their game, so they can build bigger, persistent levels that are more inclusive for players. They can do that out of the gate."

It’s a sentiment Microsoft Australia marketing manager for console and software, Adam Pollington echoed in an interview with website Stevivor.

"It's also been stated that the Xbox One is 10 times more powerful than the Xbox 360, so we're effectively 40 times greater than the Xbox 360 in terms of processing capabilities [using the cloud]. If you look to the cloud as something that is no doubt going to evolve and grow over time, it really spells out that there's no limit to where the processing power of Xbox One can go,” he said.

The news follows comments last week from EA executive vice president and chief technical officer Rajat Teneja, who claimed that the architectures of upcoming hardware is a generation ahead of the highest-end PC on the market.

Epic Games vice president and co-founder, Mark Rein voiced his disagreement with the statement on Twitter.

This is insane. So, when their cloud servers go down, all the games I bought for my Xbox One will be useless. And it'll require me to be online. This has so far been the most colossal failure of a console rollout I have seen. There is so much not to like about this console it's ridiculous. PS4 has had the next gen handed to them on a silver platter if they have the guts to grab it by renouncing all the stupid crap MS is doing for their own console.

Just another reason to be always connected to M$ so  they can data mine the f*** out of you and not pay you for that information, lag at peak times or when M$ throttles "power users" and shuts down the severs so you can't play on your day off with games that require it.

This is a great idea in theory, but I have a feeling it will be a terrible idea in practice.

This is stupidity.

The hardware of an XBox One is EXCLUSIVELY available to each user, and they've paid for (most of) it. If they've provisioned the equivalent of "3XBones" in the cloud for EACH game for EACH user, without charging anything extra, then wow. Thanks Microsoft. When are you going bankrupt? Or, how much extra are you really planning to charge your users for this?

On the other hand, what I think they MUST have meant is that developers have instant access (without any extra fees on top of any agreement they already have with Microsoft) to that much amount of CPU and storage which can be used to power online, persistent worlds for ALL users combined. That is far more feasible financially and a reasonable investment for a console manufacturer.

I would be VERY surprised if the former were true, but right now it just sounds to me like they twisted some stats off a developer contract page into utter marketing BS.

Just in case it isn't clear, what I mean is that taking Microsoft's statement literally means, if they expect an install base of 100 million XBones, then they'd have to have provisioned 300 million XBones in the cloud to give the power of "30-40 XBox 360" to each gamer.

That sounds like BS to me. What I think they might have actually done instead, is to provide the power of 3 XBones in the cloud to each developer for each game they want to make. This cluster of 3-ish machines - I assume - bootstraps developers into creating persistent online worlds, with them having to invest in several more machines to support more players.

That's all I suspect the "3 XBOnes in the cloud" is. Not a gargantuan thousands-of-dollars-per-player-per-year investment that they're stupidly spinning this as.

Coming from Scandinavia, where the vast majority have access to high speed relatively cheap fiber net, I really think this is awesome. If the scales are right, we might possibly end up at a point where all consoles are processing power is outsourced (see OnLive). Of course, this probably wouldn't happen for another decade or two, but way to with the innovation!

I'm not worried, I've got Xfinity's highest Cable Internet plan: 180 Mbps at 3 ms (milliseconds).  If you don't have internet, just buy a small plan.  But if you want guaranteed instant responses from servers and "clouds," you'll have to dish out $220 per month. The only reason I pay for this kind of speed is because everything I "could" watch on TV, I can watch on the internet.  No Cable TV for me.

My internet connection is absolutely horrible, I don't want to rely on it to boost a consoles performance via cloud. I will just buy the more powerful one to begin with.

cloud gaming has advantages and disadvantages like everything else.  This is a load of bs.  Cloud gaming hasn't even reached console performance at this point and is still reliant on yor internet connection.  There is latency.  If the servers are down  you can't play your game.

@Celtic_34 I understand. But remember when, the first gen Xbox had the Xbox live online box? Do not forget Moore's Law :)

Your dreaming if you really think cloud services will boost Xbone performance.

Im a software performance tester, I test this kind of stuff all the time & if you think cloud will assist on the fly computational decisions whilst gaming your dreaming.

Nothing more than PR rubbish.

@Nexrad People are not happy about it because this is a feature that should have been there passively with the system not require the internet to provide something that was supposed to be there, im very confident that the console from MS after the X1 will be crippled CPU and GPU wise because they will tell you that they will do that for you on the cloud, bit by bit your physical ownership is taken and you are left at their mercy with your account content. the cloud is a damn good thing and a powerful technology but in business sectors as its all pointless to go offline while at work, console and entertainment on the other hand is the opposite.

Kinda like how EA claimed internet was required for SimCity because all the heavy processing was done on the server's end... which, like this, turned out to be complete bunk. You'd think Microsoft would have taken a lesson from EA's failure and the impending backlash, but I guess not.

I bet most of that processing power available is going to go waste on developers hasty to get their games out in a bid to bill them as next-gen launch titles. Its only a year or two after the consoles launch that we'll finally get to see some optimized games for the new generation consoles. And then again, we "might" get to see such games !!!

ericstifer
ericstifer

I'll believe it when I see it, but IF this is true then...my god...

I feel this will only be possible once the entire nation has access to Google Fiber internet speeds, which could be a while looking at how fast they've expanded.

Vodoo
Vodoo

How could they have enough processing power to cover millions of Ones all at the same time, with no lag in real time? Unless it's like that streaming service that processes all the info and then streams you the end result. I forget what it's called but it's that game system that streams pc games either on your tv or pc.

People shouldn't be so quick to write this off though. It's very possible they're doing something that hasn't been done before. It's not the same as the ps4's Gakai service. That's just streaming. So they off put none essential processing that could stream reliably and the actual console handles everything that can't be streamed without lag. The heavy lifting, so to speak.

Microsoft is counting on people not having enough technical understanding to know that this is total bull###. They know their machine is underpowered when compared to PS4 so now MS is trying to all of a sudden pull THE CLOUD out of their a##.

For those of you that don't understand. The cloud is practical for archive storage or streaming media like movies and music AND THATS IT. The second you hear an MS exec talk about "real time processing" turn the sound off and go make yourself a sandwitch. At least that way you'll get something out of those few minutes of your life that otherwise would have been lost forever.

northArrow

@Nexrad @TruthSerum808 Wrong. This article proves that either the MS engineers are the idiots or (and more likely) MS is lying. Saiyan above (whose comment you liked) is correct. Latency and bandwidth restrictions not only in other parts of the world but in parts of rural America will make Microsoft's claims not possible.

MJ-X
MJ-X

@northArrow @Nexrad @TruthSerum808 Im sure the cloud benefits has nothing to do with gaming but more to TV services and features which only cater to the US population. if it has something to do with gaming then this box is a big let down.

@TruthSerum808 You need to do some research man. Cloud can be used to improve processing power that´s true. The Xbox One can really do what they said it will do, there´s only two problems called latency and bandwidth. Don´t try to start selling PS4 to everyone just because you claimed to have " enough techincal understanding"

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@TruthSerum808 that is about perfectly said. The cloud won't make the X1 3 times more powerful. It will ease the burden on the gpu and cpu and that's about it. Its not gonna make your on board stuff better and it certainly won't make it go toe to toe with high end pcs today.

"It will ease the burden on the gpu and the cpu"

No it won't. Low internet bandwith makes that virtually impossible.  It could ease the burden on your hard drive for something like having bigger levels in an MMO but thats about it. But then we already have that.

I don't get it of offering three times console?s performance, also PS4 has the same cloud and Gaikai services. That is not what I hope 4 xbox. I need games and not like first person and these R too much games of first person shooter. I need others for god sake.

This means nothing if your internet $hits itself out or you decide to take your console with you for a holiday vacation where there is no internet which is impossible with this console to begin with. as much as things are going to the cloud i can only feel like this thing has nothing to do with gaming but more so for the other features because if you need cloud processing just to play games smoothly then X1 lost next gen big time which i dont think is the case which only confirms that its dedicated to the TV, ads, achievements and whatnot...
