3DO Says Goodbye Hardware

The 3DO Company today announced that it has closed the US$20 million sale of its hardware-related business to Samsung. The deal closes an era for 3DO, which introduced the video game industry to the idea of a 32-bit multimedia video game system. The company later saw diminished sales of its 3DO game player and its software titles and moved on to make PC CD-ROM games - beginning with the multiplayer online game Meridian 59.

At last week's E3, 3DO debuted its 1997 lineup of PC software, which included Meridian 59 Revelation, Might and Magic VI, Uprising, Army Men, and Requiem: Wrath of the Fallen.

3DO Chairman and CEO Trip Hawkins said that the $20 million in capital just received from Samsung puts them in a very strong financial position.
